Gems in Enshrouded are weapon upgrades that you socket at a Gem Forge to add effects such as bleeding, burning, homing projectiles or summoned allies. Each biome has three Gem Forges, inserting a gem costs 50 Archaic Essence I, upgrading uses Archaic Essence, and the forge you use sets the maximum level, which tops out at 50 at the Veilwater Basin's Night Sanctum forge according to the Enshrouded Wiki. As of November 2026 and the 1.0 release, removing a gem is free, and late in the game you can even place a Gem Forge in your own base.
We checked this against the Enshrouded Wiki's Gems and Gem Forge pages, Keen Games' 1.0 changelog, the Wake of the Water and Forging the Path notes, and Patch 12 in November 2026.
Weapon Gems and Mined Gems Are Different Things
The word "gem" covers two separate item types, and mixing them up is a common source of confusion. Weapon gems are the socketable items described on the wiki's Gems page as powerful items that can be inserted into your weapons to gain unique effects. They drop from specific enemies and live in a weapon's gem slot. Mined gems such as Amethyst, Lapislazuli, Aquamarine and Diamond are crafting materials you dig out of the ground, used in recipes for gear, furniture and the Flame.

1.0 tied the two together in one place: Keen's changelog says mined gems were added as a resource to the crafting recipes for spell charges. That means a mage now spends some mined stones on ammunition, while every class spends Archaic Essence on weapon gems. This guide is about weapon gems; when you see "gem" below, that is what it means.
- Not every weapon has a slot. The Gem Forge can insert any gem into any weapon that has a gem slot, regardless of weapon level or gem level.
- Collect them all. Since Forging the Path, the journal's item sets reward you for finding every item in a group, and Keen named all weapon gems of a biome as one example.
- Visible in menus. Patch 12 made socketed gems show in all relevant info areas, including bows on the character screen.
Where Weapon Gems Come From
Most weapon gems are enemy drops tied to a biome. The wiki's gem list names the source for each, and a few enemy types come up again and again: the Fell Banshee, the Scavenger Berserker, the Vukah Berserker, the Fell Commander and the Hollow Reaper found in each biome's Hollow Halls. Some examples by region:
- Springlands: Gem of Bleeding and Gem of Burning from the Fell Banshee, Gem of Puncturing from the Scavenger Berserker, Gem of Skulls from the Hollow Reaper in the Springlands Hollow Halls.
- Revelwood: Gem of Retaliation from the Vukah Berserker, Gem of Toxic Betrayal and Gem of Swiftness from the Scavenger Berserker, Gem of Hopeful Embers from the Fell Banshee.
- Nomad Highlands: Gem of Agility, Gem of Corruption, Gem of Storm's Eye and the Hollow Reaper's Gem of Lesser Necromancy.
- Kindlewastes and Albaneve Summits: Gem of Battle Mania, Gem of Focused Light, Gem of Soul Reaping, Gem of Bloodlust, Gem of Meteoric Impact and Gem of Cold Composure.
- Veilwater Basin: Gem of Aerobatics from Elixir Wells, Gem of Currents, and Gem of Lycanthropy, which the wiki also links to Lacemaker Pond and a Night Sanctum.
Keen keeps adding to this list. The Wake of the Water notes mention new weapon gems for that tier without listing them, and 1.0 introduced additional Gems of Necromancy for summoner builds. Gems can also turn up in unexpected places: the wiki's fishing tables list them in the treasure pool, and our Enshrouded fishing guide explains how bait and rod affect those odds.
How the Gem Forge Works
Everything gem related happens at a Gem Forge, an Ancient device fueled by Archaic Essence. The wiki says each biome has three of them, most inside the Shroud, with the most powerful one inside a Night Sanctum. A forge lets you insert, extract, upgrade and recycle gems.

- Insert. Any forge can socket any gem into any slotted weapon. The cost is 50 Archaic Essence I, no matter how far the forge can upgrade.
- Upgrade. Gems level up with Archaic Essence, and the tier of essence depends on the gem's tier. The forge's biome sets the maximum level you can reach there.
- Extract. The wiki notes that removing a gem no longer costs essence as of 1.0, so moving a favorite gem to a new weapon is free.
- Recycle. Recycling a gem returns part of the essence spent on it. Higher-level gems and higher-tier forges return more.
The biggest quality of life change in 1.0 is for late-game players: the changelog says you can now place a Gem Forge station in your player base in the late part of the game, so you no longer need to fly back into a Night Sanctum every time you want to tweak a weapon. Keen also cleaned up the insertion, extraction and upgrade menus back in Wake of the Water, which makes the costs easier to read before you commit.
Upgrade Caps by Forge
Because the maximum level depends on where you upgrade, it pays to know which forge to visit. The wiki's table lists the essence tier and the caps for each biome's standard forges and its Night Sanctum forge:
| Biome | Essence tier used | Standard forge max | Night Sanctum forge max |
|---|---|---|---|
| Springlands | Archaic Essence (5) | 10 | 12 |
| Revelwood | Archaic Essence (13) | 15 | 18 |
| Nomad Highlands | Archaic Essence (18) | 20 | 22 |
| Kindlewastes | Archaic Essence (25) | 30 | 32 |
| Albaneve Summits | Archaic Essence (33) | 35 | 40 |
| Veilwater Basin | Archaic Essence (40) | 45 | 50 |
The wiki's table does not yet include a Cinder's Cradle forge, and 1.0 raised the player cap to 50 and gear to 55, so treat the top row as the highest cap the wiki currently documents rather than a final ceiling. Keen's own 1.0 notes describe gem numbers up to level 50, which matches the table.
A simple rule follows from the table: upgrade a gem at the highest forge you can safely reach. Pushing a gem to level 10 in the Springlands and then carrying it to Revelwood is fine, but spending essence on a gem you will replace within the hour is not.
Strong Gem Picks by Playstyle
There is no single best gem; the right one depends on how you fight. Here is how the wiki's effect descriptions line up with common builds, plus the balance changes 1.0 made:
- Two-handed and sword fighters: Gem of Bloodlust (kills can drop health orbs that grant bonus cutting damage), Gem of Swiftness (bonus cutting damage after a short sprint) and Gem of Overpowering (extra stamina damage against blocking enemies).
- Parry and block players: Gem of Retaliation empowers the next attack after a blocked hit, and Gem of Cold Composure raises resistances while blocking or aiming at the cost of movement speed.
- Rangers: Gem of Puncturing makes enemies take extra pierce damage from any source, and Gem of Aerobatics spawns homing piercing projectiles when you attack in the air.
- Mages: Gem of Storm's Eye chains lightning between marked enemies, Gem of Focused Light stacks up to three fire marks while aiming, and Gem of Burning adds fire damage over time.
- Summoners: Gem of Lesser Necromancy raises an allied Hollow on kills. 1.0 capped how many it can spawn and made necromancy companions lose health when out of combat, to balance the new Gems of Necromancy and summon spells.
- Poison builds: Keen buffed the Gem of Toxic Reaction in 1.0, saying it gains between +21% damage per second at level 10 and up to 65% at level 50. The same patch lowered some stats on the Gem of Battle Mania and the Gem of Obsession.
One welcome fix for builders: 1.0 made weapon gems stop affecting animals in your base, so area effects no longer hurt your livestock. For full combinations of gems, skills and armor, see our guide to Enshrouded builds, and if you play a caster, pair your gem with the right eternal spells. Shroud-heavy players should also look at the Gem of Hopeful Embers, which makes defeated enemies drop time-restoring orbs when your Shroud time runs low, a useful backup when a Fell Curse has already shortened your timer.
Archaic Essence and Common Mistakes
Archaic Essence is the real currency of the gem system, and 1.0 made it easier to gather by increasing the yield from mining the corresponding terrain in all tiers. Even so, most players run short at some point. These are the mistakes that cost the most:
- Upgrading at the wrong forge. A standard forge stops short of the Night Sanctum cap in every biome. If you want the extra levels, finish the upgrade at the sanctum.
- Leaving gems in old weapons. Extraction is free in 1.0, so pull your gem before you salvage or store a weapon.
- Recycling too early. Recycling returns only part of the essence. Keep a gem you might use on a future build unless you need the essence now.
- Ignoring the item sets. Collecting every gem of a biome counts toward a journal item set, which is a nice bonus for completionists.
Getting Every Gem at Once
Farming each gem from the right enemy in each biome, then grinding essence to upgrade it, is one of the longest grinds in the game. On PC, the store's all level 40 gems package transfers all 20 gem types used in weapon slots, each at level 40 and in quantities of 8, for 160 gems in total, and the listing says they can be used from level 1.
It is a PC-only service. Every other option for the game, including a modded save that also works on PS5, is on the Enshrouded services page.
