Bell Bearings in Elden Ring are key items you hand to the Twin Maiden Husks in the Roundtable Hold to add new goods to their shop, and the ones that matter most are the Smithing-Stone Miner's [1] to [4] and Somberstone Miner's [1] to [5], because they let you buy weapon upgrade materials instead of farming them. Fextralife counts 62 Bell Bearings in total, and 26 of them carry into New Game Plus. Below is where every upgrade and glovewort bearing is, what each unlocks, and which merchant and Shadow of the Erdtree bearings are worth turning in.
We checked locations and shop unlocks against the Fextralife Bell Bearings, Stonesword Key, Spirit Ashes and New Game Plus pages in November 2026.
How Bell Bearings Work
Every Bell Bearing does the same thing: you give it to the Twin Maiden Husks, the shopkeepers in the Roundtable Hold, and their stock grows. Some add a handful of consumables, some add a whole merchant's inventory, and the most valuable add unlimited upgrade materials for runes. The bearing is consumed when you hand it over, and the new stock stays available for the rest of the playthrough.

Fextralife sorts them into a few families. Merchant's bearings copy the stock of the Nomadic, Isolated, Hermit, Abandoned and Imprisoned Merchants. Peddler's bearings add bones, meat, medicine and gravity stones. Named bearings come from NPCs like Sellen, Corhyn, Miriel, Gowry, Patches, D and Thops, usually at the end of their story or after their death. And the miner's and picker's bearings unlock upgrade materials, which is where most of the value lies.
New Game Plus treats them differently. Fextralife says only the bearings that add crafting or upgrade materials are kept, which is 26 of the 62, and those from NPCs or merchants are not. There is a catch: the shop unlock only carries over if you hand the bearing in before you start the next journey. A bearing still sitting in your inventory is lost. If you are close to the end, our guide to the six endings covers what else to wrap up before Journey 2.
Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearings
These four bearings unlock regular Smithing Stones, which upgrade standard weapons. Each one adds two tiers to the Twin Maiden Husks' shop:
- [1]: Smithing Stone [1] and [2], plus Glintstone Scrap. Dropped by the Crystalian boss at the end of Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel in Liurnia.
- [2]: Smithing Stone [3] and [4], plus Explosive Stone. In a chest at the first secret area inside the Sealed Tunnel.
- [3]: Smithing Stone [5] and [6]. In a chest at the bottom of the stairs in Zamor Ruins, in the Mountaintops of the Giants.
- [4]: Smithing Stone [7] and [8]. Earned by defeating the Godskin Duo in Crumbling Farum Azula.
The first bearing is the one to chase early. Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel is in Liurnia, which the Fextralife route puts at level 40 to 50, and unlimited Smithing Stone [1] and [2] removes the early grind for a +6 weapon. The last one comes very late, which is by design: by the time you beat the Godskin Duo you are close to the end of the game.
Note what is missing. The highest stone any miner's bearing unlocks is Smithing Stone [8], which takes a weapon to +24. Fextralife's upgrade materials page lists no shop source for the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone needed for the final step to +25, so that one still depends on what you find in the world.
Somberstone Miner's Bell Bearings
Somber Smithing Stones upgrade unique weapons, which go to +10 instead of +25, so every tier counts double. There are five bearings in this set:

- [1]: Somber Smithing Stone [1] and [2], plus Glintstone Scrap. Dropped by the Fallingstar Beast in Sellia Crystal Tunnel, Caelid.
- [2]: Somber Smithing Stone [3] and [4]. From the Crystalian Spear and Crystalian Ringblade boss in the Altus Tunnel.
- [3]: Somber Smithing Stone [5] and [6]. On a body outside the First Church of Marika in the Mountaintops of the Giants.
- [4]: Somber Smithing Stone [7] and [8], plus Sanctuary Stone. On a corpse next to the Tempest-Facing Balcony Site of Grace in Crumbling Farum Azula.
- [5]: Somber Smithing Stone [9]. On a body in the abandoned temple on the north side of Crumbling Farum Azula.
The first two are mid-game and worth a detour if you use a unique weapon such as a boss weapon. Sellia Crystal Tunnel sits in Caelid, a region the route recommends at level 60 and up, so do not rush it with a fresh character. Like the regular set, nothing here unlocks the final stone: the Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone that takes a special weapon from +9 to +10 has no shop source on Fextralife's list.
All nine miner's bearings are kept in New Game Plus, according to Fextralife, which makes subsequent journeys much faster to gear up. That also means the effort of collecting them in your first playthrough pays off every time you start again.
Glovewort Picker's Bearings for Spirit Ashes
Spirit Ashes are upgraded by Roderika, whom Fextralife calls the only NPC who can do it. You unlock her services by talking to her at the Stormhill Shack and then exhausting her dialogue and Blacksmith Hewg's at the Roundtable Hold. Standard ashes use Grave Glovewort, and renowned ashes use Ghost Glovewort. Six bearings unlock both lines:
- Glovewort Picker's [1]: Grave Glovewort [1] to [3]. Dropped by the Erdtree Burial Watchdog in Wyndham Catacombs on the Altus Plateau.
- Glovewort Picker's [2]: Grave Glovewort [4] to [6]. Dropped by the Ulcerated Tree Spirit in Giants' Mountaintop Catacombs.
- Glovewort Picker's [3]: Grave Glovewort [7] to [9]. In a gazebo in front of a lake in Crumbling Farum Azula, which Fextralife says you can grab by staying in stealth.
- Ghost-Glovewort Picker's [1]: Ghost Glovewort [1] to [3]. On a corpse at the base of a gazebo in Nokron, Eternal City.
- Ghost-Glovewort Picker's [2]: Ghost Glovewort [4] to [6]. In a chest in a small room in Nokstella, Eternal City, guarded by shielded Silver Tears.
- Ghost-Glovewort Picker's [3]: Ghost Glovewort [7] to [9]. In a graveyard in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree.
If you rely on a favorite renowned ash, the Ghost-Glovewort bearings in Nokron and Nokstella are the priority. You will be in those cities anyway if you are collecting Larval Tears, and our Larval Tear location guide covers the same routes.
Merchant, Peddler and NPC Bearings
The merchant bearings are a convenience rather than a necessity. Each one lets you buy a specific merchant's stock in the Roundtable Hold, which saves trips across the map. Some come from the merchants themselves, and Fextralife says the Bell Bearing Hunter, who appears at night at certain merchant shacks such as the Warmaster's Shack, the Church of Vows and the Hermit and Isolated Merchant's shacks, drops several of them.
A few of these bearings also change prices. The Twin Maiden Husks sell Stonesword Keys at 4,000 runes by default, but Fextralife notes that turning in an Abandoned Merchant's or Nomadic Merchant [4] bearing makes the keys 2,000 runes with a stock of four, while Patches' bearing switches them to 5,000 runes with a stock of one. If keys matter to you, turn in the cheaper bearing. Our keepsake guide explains why two keys at the start can be worth more than a seed for some players.
NPC bearings such as Thops's, Sellen's or D's usually appear after that character's questline ends. They can include goods you never bought from that NPC while they were alive, so it is worth checking the Twin Maiden Husks' stock after any major questline resolves. None of these carry into New Game Plus.
Shadow of the Erdtree Bearings
The expansion adds its own set of Hornsent bearings for the Twin Maiden Husks. Fextralife lists the Herbalist's, two Mushroom-Seller's, the Greasemonger's, the Moldmonger's, the Spellmachinist's and the String-Seller's bearings. As with every other bearing, you hand them to the Twin Maiden Husks and their goods join the shop in the Roundtable Hold, which saves trips back into the expansion when you want to restock.
The expansion opens only after you have defeated Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood. Our guide to starting Shadow of the Erdtree walks through those requirements and what to do in your first hours there.
Want the Materials Without the Hunt?
Collecting every miner's bearing takes you to the very end of the game, and Smithing Stone [8] is the last tier any of them unlock. If you would rather start with materials in hand, the store's best starter modded save lists all smithing stones on every character, with everything at x9999, according to its product page. It gives you four characters at the start of the game with zero bosses defeated and max level 713.
It is available for PS4 and PS5 only. You need to own Elden Ring, have Shadow of the Erdtree purchased and installed, and keep PlayStation Plus active on the same account, and the save is applied by logging into your account after checkout. Details are on the Elden Ring best starter save page, and the rest of the catalog is in the Elden Ring section.
