Elden Ring Larval Tear Locations: All 18 Plus the DLC

Elden Ring YouTube thumbnail: Elden Ring - All Larval Tear Locations for Respeccing Your Attributes

There are 18 Larval Tears in the base game per playthrough, plus 9 more in the Realm of Shadow, and the Elden Ring larval tear locations cluster in a few places: disguised enemies in the open world, two merchants who sell one each for 3,000 runes, and a run of pickups in the underground cities of Nokron and Nokstella. Each tear pays for one rebirth with Rennala once you have beaten her. Below is every location by region, what to watch for so you do not lose one, and how the Shadow of the Erdtree tears work.

We checked every location here against the Fextralife Larval Tear and Rebirth pages and the Elden Ring wiki on wiki.gg in November 2026. Where the two wikis describe a spot differently, we note both.

What Larval Tears Are For

A Larval Tear is the currency for rebirth, the game's respec system. After you defeat the Red Wolf of Radagon and Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon at Raya Lucaria Academy in Liurnia, you can return to Rennala and ask her to redistribute all of your attribute points. Each rebirth costs one tear, and Fextralife notes that the tear is only spent after you confirm "Undergo rebirth?", so backing out of the menu costs nothing.

Rebirth has one rule worth knowing before you spend a tear: you cannot lower any attribute below the starting value of your origin. A Prophet who respecs into Strength still keeps 16 Faith, for example, which is one reason the class choice matters later. Our comparison of every Elden Ring starting class shows those floors for all twelve origins.

Tears are also worth stockpiling. Fextralife confirms that every Larval Tear in your inventory carries over into New Game Plus, so there is no reason to burn them early. And wiki.gg points out that a tear stays in your inventory if you open the rebirth menu without changing any stats.

Many of the open-world tears drop from a specific trick enemy: something that looks like a harmless Wandering Noble or a burning corpse, which transforms into a much tougher monster when you attack. If an unusually calm noble is standing apart from the others, it is probably one of them.

Limgrave, Liurnia and Caelid

Six tears sit in the first three regions, and four of them are in Liurnia, the same region as Rennala.

  • Limgrave (1). A Lesser Runebear disguised as a sword-carrying Wandering Noble, directly east of the Agheel Lake South Site of Grace.
  • Liurnia, Village of the Albinaurics (1). Fextralife places it in the village graveyard, and wiki.gg describes it beside a coffin in the northeast of the village.
  • Liurnia, disguised crayfish (1). A Grafted Scion disguised as a Giant Crayfish patrols the gazebo between Rose Church and Boilprawn Shack. Of the four crayfish there, only the patrolling one is the disguised enemy.
  • Liurnia, behind Caria Manor (1). In the graveyard east of Caria Manor. You need the "Resurrection" Painting solved and Royal Knight Loretta defeated, then you touch the ghost sitting on a chair.
  • Liurnia, Pidia (1). Pidia, Carian Servant sells one for 3,000 runes after you defeat Loretta, reached by dropping onto a balcony from the Three Sisters area.
  • Caelid (1). A disguised Troll, the one kneeling at the western end among the stone coffins on the cliff south of the Caelid Highway South Site of Grace.

The Limgrave Runebear is the best early target, but it hits hard for a low-level character. If it is too much, come back later; it will still be there. If you want a sense of when each region is comfortable, our Elden Ring boss order guide lists recommended levels by area.

Siofra River, Nokron and Nokstella

The underground is where Larval Tears really pile up. Nine of the 18 base-game tears are below the surface, split between the Siofra River area, Nokron, Eternal City and Nokstella, Eternal City further along the Ainsel River.

  • Siofra River merchant (1). A merchant in the Siofra River area sells one for 3,000 runes. Fextralife calls him a Nomadic Merchant, while wiki.gg calls him the Abandoned Merchant.
  • Nokron stone building (1). On a corpse in the stone building southeast of the Nokron Site of Grace, guarded by two Fallen Hawk Soldiers according to wiki.gg.
  • Nokron gazebo (1). On a corpse in the middle of a gazebo on the path to the Mimic Tear. Silver Tears drop from the ceiling as you approach.
  • Mimic Tear (2). The Mimic Tear boss drops two Larval Tears when defeated.
  • Night's Sacred Ground (1). Dropped by a Silver Sphere, which wiki.gg calls a Giant Silver Tear, before Night's Sacred Ground.
  • Nokstella (3). Three Silver Spheres in Nokstella each drop one: one on the bridge, one hanging from the ceiling in the northeast building after the bridge, and one in the building at the top of the stairs after the bridge.

The ceiling sphere in Nokstella is the one people lose. Fextralife warns not to land the killing blow while it is still on the ceiling, and wiki.gg says killing the Giant Silver Tear before it drops down can leave the tear unreachable. Hit it to make it fall, then finish it on the ground.

Nokron opens after you defeat Starscourge Radahn, which creates the Starfall Crater that leads down to the city. That makes Radahn the gate for five of these tears, so plan a respec after Nokron if your build is still settling.

Altus Plateau, Mt. Gelmir and the Snowfield

The last three base-game tears are spread across the late-game regions, and each is another disguised enemy:

  • Altus Plateau (1). A Lion Guardian disguised and cowering in ruins on the clifftops south of Dominula, Windmill Village. Fextralife suggests heading north from the Rampartside Path Site of Grace.
  • Mt. Gelmir (1). A Wormface disguised as a burning Putrid Corpse, next to the first fire of a ruined camp east of the Road of Iniquity Site of Grace.
  • Consecrated Snowfield (1). A disguised Lesser Runebear half-buried in snow with two nobles beside it, southeast of the Inner Consecrated Snowfield Site of Grace.

All three of these sit in regions the progress route rates at level 60 and above, so they tend to come after your first respec rather than before it. That makes them useful as a reserve: by the time you reach the Snowfield, you know whether your build needs another adjustment for the final bosses or the expansion.

Larval Tears in Shadow of the Erdtree

The expansion adds its own set. Wiki.gg counts 9 in the Realm of Shadow, and Fextralife says they look different and carry different lore but work exactly the same way at Rennala. The catch is timing: Fextralife says these tears only appear at night, inside a ring of glowing blue gravestones. If you find a ring of blue graves during the day, rest at a Site of Grace and pass the time to nightfall.

Fextralife lists these locations for the Realm of Shadow tears:

  • Prospect Town
  • Scorched Ruins
  • Suppressing Pillar
  • Church of the Crusade
  • Abandoned Ailing Village
  • Rabbath's Rise
  • Messmer's Army Encampment
  • Rauh Base (two separate spots)

Shadow of the Erdtree only opens after you beat Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood, so these tears are a late-game bonus rather than an early respec option. Our guide to starting the DLC walks through that entry route.

Base-Game Tears by Region

Here is the base-game count per region, which adds up to the 18 wiki.gg lists per playthrough.

Base-game Larval Tears per region (Fextralife and wiki.gg)
RegionTearsHow you get them
Limgrave1Disguised Runebear
Liurnia of the Lakes4Graveyard pickup, disguised crayfish, Caria Manor ghost, Pidia (3,000 runes)
Caelid1Disguised Troll
Siofra River1Merchant (3,000 runes)
Nokron, Eternal City5Two corpses, Mimic Tear (2), Silver Sphere
Nokstella, Eternal City3Silver Spheres
Altus Plateau1Disguised Lion Guardian
Mt. Gelmir1Disguised Wormface
Consecrated Snowfield1Disguised Runebear

An efficient order is to grab the Limgrave Runebear and the four Liurnia tears around the time you beat Rennala, then clear Nokron and Nokstella after Radahn. That gives you up to thirteen tears before the late game, which covers almost any amount of experimenting. Spending runes on the two merchant tears is worth it once money stops being tight, and our Bell Bearings guide explains how the Twin Maiden Husks can make other key items cheaper as you go.

Before spending any tear, plan the respec on paper. Write down the weapon or spell you are building around, check its attribute requirements on its item page, and add the Vigor you want on top. Then remember the floor: whatever your origin started with is already counted, so your real budget is the points above those starting values. Doing this first means one tear per build change instead of two or three spent on trial and error. If you are only testing a weapon, try it at its minimum requirements before committing a full rebirth to it, since the menu itself is free until you confirm.

If Runes Are the Real Bottleneck

A respec moves your points around, but a new build often needs more points than you have, and that means grinding runes. If you would rather put that time into actually playing the new build, the store's Elden Ring runes service drops runes in-game for you to collect, according to its product page, with no account information needed and same-day delivery after the team emails you.

The service covers PlayStation, Xbox and Steam. Read the details on the Elden Ring runes service page, or browse the full Elden Ring section.
