New AFK Journey players progress fastest by pushing AFK Stages before exploring, setting up their Wishlist as soon as it unlocks, leveling five heroes in the Resonating Hall, and upgrading gear by class rather than by hero. This beginner guide covers each of those systems in the order you meet them, from the Homestead-based opening through to the point where seasonal content unlocks, as the game stands in November 2026.
We checked this against Prydwen's Beginner Guide and Tips and Tricks pages, the official AFK Journey 1.6.1 and 1.7.1 patch notes on the Farlight website, and Pocket Gamer's tier list updated November 4, 2026.
Your First Hour: Story, Homestead and Free Heroes
The opening changed a lot in January 2026. Version 1.6.1 rebuilt the early game so that new player quests and story are woven into the Homestead, the player-housing and base-building system, and Prydwen notes that new players are now guided into the Homestead first. Expect your first quests to mix short story beats with building, harvesting and crafting.

Several free heroes come with that opening. The same update replaced the old Starter Story growth path with an event called Dreamdelve, and accounts created after the update receive 14 Soul Sigils for Aurora, a Celestial support, by finishing its quests. It also changed the beginner gift mail to give two Koko copies. Pick these up early, because a free Celestial is something many veteran players had to wait months for.
Do not worry about choosing a perfect starting team. Prydwen points out that the first two pity rewards on the standard banner are fixed: the first S-Level hero at 10 pulls is Cecia, a strong story damage dealer, and the second at 20 pulls is one of three top healers, Rowan, Hewynn or Smokey and Meerky. That is the main reason Prydwen calls rerolling unnecessary for most players. If you want to know where those heroes stand today, Cecia, Rowan and Hewynn are all in the SS tier of our current tier list.
Push AFK Stages Before You Explore
The open world is beautiful and full of chests, and it is tempting to wander. Prydwen's advice is blunt: focus on AFK Stages first. Stage progress unlocks new modes, raises your passive income of gold, experience and hero essence, and regularly awards Invite Letters, diamonds and equipment boxes. Only then head into the world map and the other modes that opened in the meantime, and repeat the cycle until you are stuck everywhere for the day.
- Do not let idle rewards overflow. The reward chest holds 12 hours of resources at first and expands to 24 hours as you progress.
- Save Hourglasses, which grant several hours of idle income instantly, for the end of the day or when you are stuck, because their value grows with your stage.
- Leave the Instant Rewards feature alone unless you are blocked, for the same reason.
- When a stage will not fall, switch to manual control and use Ultimates yourself instead of relying on auto battle.
Our best teams guide lists the early Shemira Wilder and Odie Mauler cores that carry most players through the first stretch of stages.
How Leveling Works: The Resonating Hall
AFK Journey does not make you level each hero separately. Instead, the Resonating Hall gives you five Hands of Resonance slots, and only the heroes in those slots are leveled by hand.

- Your Resonance Level is set by the lowest-level hero among the five Hands of Resonance.
- Every other hero you own is raised to that Resonance Level automatically.
- Heroes in the Hands of Resonance cannot be more than 10 levels above the Resonance Level.
- You can swap heroes in and out of the Hands of Resonance at any time at no cost.
The practical effect is that you cannot ruin your account by leveling the wrong hero. If a new carry arrives, swap them into a Hand of Resonance and they immediately match your top level. This is also why the rest of this guide focuses on copies and gear: levels take care of themselves, while dupes and Acorns are the real bottleneck.
Recruitment Banners and the Wishlist
There are several recruitment banners, and knowing which currency goes where saves a lot of waste. Prydwen lists the following:
- All-Hero Recruitment. The standard banner, using Invite Letters or diamonds. After 30 pulls the Wishlist unlocks, letting you pick two S-Level and two A-Level heroes per faction; once it is full, every hero you pull comes from it.
- Rate-up Recruitment. Used for new or featured heroes, with a fixed pity of 40 pulls that never increases.
- Epic Recruitment. Uses Epic Invite Letters only, has a five-slot Wishlist from the start and better rates, with pity capped at 30.
- Stargaze. The only banner for Celestial and Hypogean heroes. It unlocks after 400 pulls on the other banners and uses Stellar Crystals, a limited currency from the Guild and Recruitment stores.
Set the Wishlist the moment it unlocks, since an empty Wishlist means random pulls. A-Level heroes deserve real consideration, because many of them are meta picks and they can reach the same top ascension tiers as S-Level heroes. Our guide to redeeming codes covers the small but useful free pulls the developer posts from time to time.
Gear Is Shared by Class
Equipment in AFK Journey belongs to a class, not a hero. Each of the six classes (Mage, Marksman, Rogue, Support, Tank and Warrior) equips six pieces: weapon, gloves, accessory, helm, armor and boots. Any hero of that class uses the class's gear in battle, so swapping heroes never strips your upgrades.
Prydwen suggests choosing one damage class to upgrade first based on your main carry. Mage is its first recommendation because Shemira has stayed relevant in every mode, with Marksman (Odie, Bonnie) and Rogue (Faramor, Eironn) as alternatives. After that, invest in Tank gear so your front line survives and Support gear so healers reach their Ultimates sooner. You can drop better gear from stages or forge it with Casting Shards from recycled items, and the item level you can forge is tied to your Resonance Level.
Shops, Acorns and Where Your Diamonds Should Go
Most of your hero copies will eventually come from shops rather than banners. Prydwen explains that you reach them by visiting the Mystical House and then the Emporium, and since version 1.6.1 you can also build a Mystical House inside your Homestead. Six stores matter for a new player:
- Recruitment Store: summoning currency, Acorns and Soulstones, refreshed monthly.
- Guild Store: summoning currency, Acorns and Celestial or Hypogean copies, refreshed daily and monthly.
- Season Store: copies of previous rate-up heroes, EX Equipment Reset items and other seasonal goods.
- Arena Store and Dream Store: S-Level copies and A-Level copies respectively, refreshed monthly.
- Friendship Store: Affinity items and gestures, refreshed daily.
Acorns are the second ascension currency besides duplicates. They come in four faction versions that only work on that faction plus a universal version for any hero, so match your Acorns to the faction core you are building. With diamonds, Prydwen suggests spending most on pulls but keeping a reserve for the weekly and monthly store deals, and if you can wait, buying the discounted daily pull in the Emporium for 210 diamonds.
Your Daily Routine and When Seasons Unlock
Once the opening rush is over, AFK Journey becomes a short daily session. Prydwen estimates five to 20 minutes a day after you finish the story and map, depending on how hard you push.
- Join a guild as soon as you can. Guild currency buys Celestial and Hypogean copies, and since version 1.7.1 guilds can hold up to 90 members.
- Fight the daily Dream Realm boss. It is the best source of A-Level hero copies early on, and each attempt is spent the moment the battle starts.
- Spend your Arena attempts, ideally at the end of the day when your heroes are strongest.
- Push Legend Trial. Each faction's trial can only run 20 stages ahead of the others, and all faction trials open on Sundays to catch up.
- Tend your Homestead. Our Homestead guide explains requests, stamina and which buildings matter.
Seasonal content is the long-term goal. According to the official 1.7.1 notes, a season unlocks once your Hands of Resonance reach level 240 and you complete the New Journey quest, on servers that have been active for at least 21 days. Seasons last around four months each, and the current one, Veil of Memories, opened on September 23, 2026. Prydwen estimated at launch that casual play reaches level 240 in roughly 70 to 80 days, so do not rush; the base game is where you build the roster the season will test.
Skipping Ahead
Reaching level 240 and a season-ready roster takes a couple of months for most players. If you would rather begin further along, the AFK Journey page of our store lists player accounts from sellers, and what is available changes daily. Farlight's Terms of Service ask players not to disclose their password to any third party or let a third party use their account, which is worth reading before you decide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I reroll in AFK Journey?
Most players do not need to. The first two S-Level pity rewards on the standard banner are fixed, Cecia at 10 pulls and one of Rowan, Hewynn or Smokey and Meerky at 20, so every account starts with a solid carry and healer.
What should beginners focus on first?
AFK Stages. They raise your idle income and unlock modes, and they award Invite Letters and diamonds along the way. Explore the map once you are stuck.
How do I get Celestial and Hypogean heroes?
Through the Guild Store with guild currency, through Stargaze after 400 pulls, and through events such as Dreamdelve, which gives new accounts 14 Aurora Soul Sigils.
Is AFK Journey free to play friendly?
Prydwen considers it very free to play friendly, noting that patient players can compete in Arena and Dream Realm once they reach the ascension ceiling.
When do seasons unlock?
After your Hands of Resonance reach level 240 and you finish New Journey, on a server that has been active for at least 21 days.
Can I play AFK Journey on PC?
Yes. Prydwen notes there is an official PC client you can download from the AFK Journey website, alongside the mobile versions.
