The ending most players and guide writers rate highest in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is the Kaymanov ending, known by its trophy name Project Y, with Strelok's ending as the usual runner-up for longtime fans of the series. Whichever one you want, the outcome is decided by three dialogue choices late in the main story, so you can plan for it long before the credits roll.
We checked this against the PSNProfiles trophy list, Game8's ending and missables guides, PC Gamer's ending breakdown and GSC Game World's official Cost of Hope notes in November 2026.
Spoiler warning: the sections below name late-game missions, characters and the final outcome of every ending.
How Your Ending Is Actually Decided
Heart of Chornobyl has four main endings, and only a handful of late decisions lock them in. Game8's ending guide boils it down to three moments: the conversation with Scar during Subtle Matter, the confrontation with Colonel Korshunov during Dangerous Liaisons, and the meeting with the Doctor in the Red Forest during The Last Wish. Earlier choices change who you fight beside and which bases stay friendly, but they do not close any ending on their own.

- Subtle Matter: while you use the visiograph in Orbita Station, Scar catches you. Answering "Eternal spring" puts you on the Spark route; answering "Life is for the living" keeps the Strelok, Kaymanov and Ward routes open.
- Dangerous Liaisons: when Korshunov catches you, "I'm not your enemy" commits you to the Ward, while "Escape" carries forward whatever you chose in Subtle Matter.
- The Last Wish: facing the Doctor in the Red Forest, the [Fire] option locks Strelok's ending and [Lower the gun] locks the Kaymanov ending.
One detail surprises a lot of players: Game8 notes that Dangerous Liaisons is your last chance to join the Ward, and Korshunov will still accept you even if you sided with Noontide and Spark earlier, because you killed Faust. So a run that leaned toward Scar for most of the story can still swing to the military in the final act.
The hard cutoff comes a little later. Game8 lists the main mission Down Below as the official point of no return; once you start it you cannot go back to the open Zone until the final missions are done, and any side missions still in your journal are canceled. Clear your side content before that mission if you care about it.
The Four Endings at a Glance
Each ending has its own silver trophy on PlayStation, which is a handy way to confirm which one you earned. The table pairs every route with its trophy and the choices that lead there.
| Ending | Trophy | Subtle Matter | Dangerous Liaisons | The Last Wish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kaymanov | Project Y | Life is for the living | Escape | [Lower the gun] |
| Strelok | She will never be free | Life is for the living | Escape | [Fire] |
| Ward | Brave new world | Life is for the living | I'm not your enemy | Not required |
| Spark | Today never ends | Eternal spring | Escape | Not required |
The trophy descriptions hint at what happens. "Brave new world" reads that Korshunov sacrificed himself so humanity could have a future free of the Zone, "Today never ends" says Scar went into the pod to rid the Zone of darkness, "She will never be free" has Strelok entering the pod to protect her, and "Project Y" is described as going through with Kaimanov's initial plan (the trophy list spells the name with an "i").
Why Project Y Gets Called the Best Ending
There is no official "good" ending, and GSC has never ranked them, so "best" comes down to taste. That said, the Kaymanov ending is the one guide writers keep landing on. Game8 ranks it first, describing it as the most open-ended of the four: Skif steps into the stasis tube himself, and the world begins to see new Zones appearing around the globe. That leaves the bigger story wide open instead of shutting the door on the Zone.

Players seem to agree. In Game8's reader poll on the same page, the Kaymanov ending led with 99 votes, ahead of the Ward ending at 71, Strelok at 30 and Spark at just 3. Treat that as a snapshot of one community rather than a final verdict, but the gap is wide enough to show where opinion sits.
The other reason people like it is how it treats the cast. Game8 points out that this route lines Skif up with Richter's sense of wonder about the Zone instead of the zealotry Scar and, by the end, Strelok show. If you want an ending that feels like a choice made by Skif rather than handed to someone else, Project Y is the closest fit.
Getting it is not hard once you know the path: stay off the Spark route in Subtle Matter, pick "Escape" in Dangerous Liaisons, then lower your gun when you meet the Doctor in The Last Wish. PC Gamer adds that after sparing him you can learn the rest of his story by grabbing a cartridge from the room beneath his house, which is worth doing before you move on.
Strelok, Ward and Spark: What Each Route Costs You
Strelok's ending is the natural pick for anyone who played the original trilogy. Game8 calls it the more final of the two Strelok-adjacent outcomes, because he uses his new position to bar anyone from entering the Zone again. PC Gamer describes the same result: Strelok takes control of the Monolith and has them stop anyone from entering or leaving, so the Zone stays untouched. It is a satisfying close for a legacy character, if a bleak one.
The Ward ending suits players who see the Zone as a threat. According to PC Gamer's walkthrough of that route, the Ward gains control and the Zone is dissipated, and Skif can take a colonel's rank if he wants, though the final scenes make it clear how tightly the military now holds him. It is also the route that sends you into a fight against Scar's Spark teams at the Foundation.
The Spark ending is the least popular for a reason. Scar steps into the pod to make the Shining Zone real, and PC Gamer notes the closing scenes reveal it was an illusion all along. Some players find that twist effective; most find it hollow, which matches the three votes it got in Game8's poll.
There is one practical warning that applies to every ending except Strelok's. Game8 reports that those routes end with a boss fight against Strelok in which he can clip through walls and vanish from the arena, softlocking some players. Their advice is to kill him quickly, and to drop to Rookie difficulty if you are struggling, which is one more reason to read our breakdown of how the difficulty modes differ before the finale.
Saving Smart So You Can See Every Ending
Heart of Chornobyl has no New Game Plus. Game8 confirms that once you finish, the only way back into the Zone is a save from before Down Below. That makes manual saves your real ending selector, and a few well-placed ones let you see all four endings without replaying the whole campaign.
- In Subtle Matter, make a save before you enter the pod. The choice with Scar follows shortly after, and this is the only save that can reach the Spark ending.
- In Dangerous Liaisons, save when you reach the white door on your way out. The talk with Korshunov happens next, so this save covers the Ward ending and the routes that need "Escape."
- On the Strelok route, save after you wake up following the colonel fight under Prypiat and before you walk to the Doctor's house. That single save splits Strelok and Kaymanov.
Those three save points come from a PSNProfiles player guide, whose author estimates three to four hours of play between the Subtle Matter choice and the credits. Keep them in separate slots and never overwrite them. Does Cost of Hope Change Which Ending Is Best?
No. The Cost of Hope expansion, released on August 20, 2026, tells a story that GSC says runs in parallel with Heart of Chornobyl, and it does not rewrite the four main endings. It does add two endings of its own, and Game8 explains that a single choice in the mission The Destructive Power of the Mind decides them: "Zulu, you're wrong" leads to the Freedom ending (Contra spem spero), and "Mavka, back off" leads to the Duty ending (Battle on, and win your battle).
Game8 rates the Freedom ending as the better of the two because Mavka leaves behind a working Oasis, but its reader poll leaned the other way, with 218 votes for Duty against 144 for Freedom. If you want the details on starting the expansion and what it adds, see our Cost of Hope guide. For background on the groups behind both stories, our existing guide to the Zone's factions is a good refresher.
Replaying for a Different Ending
Seeing a second ending usually means a fresh campaign, and the slow part of any replay is rebuilding your money and kit. If you would rather spend that time on the story, the store's fully upgraded gear save is delivered on a fresh early-game profile, so the campaign and every ending choice are still yours to make. It starts you with 99,999,999 coupons, every weapon and armor set stacked x9999, all ammo types, crafting resources and weapon upgrade parts, plus consumables and artifacts in your inventory and personal stash.
It is for PS5 and PC only (not PS4 or Xbox), you need to own the game, and carry weight is unchanged, so you still manage what you take into the field. Other Stalker 2 services are listed on the Stalker 2 hub.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many endings does Stalker 2 have?
The base game has four main endings: Kaymanov (Project Y), Strelok, Ward and Spark. The Cost of Hope expansion adds two more for its own storyline, a Duty ending and a Freedom ending.
What is the good ending in Stalker 2?
There is no official good ending. The Kaymanov ending is the most common pick because it is the most open-ended, and it led Game8's reader poll. Strelok's ending is the favorite of many series veterans.
When is the point of no return in Stalker 2?
The main mission Down Below. Once you start it you cannot return to the open Zone until the ending, and unfinished side missions are canceled.
Can you keep playing after the ending?
Not on the finished save. There is no New Game Plus, so you return to the Zone by loading a save from before Down Below.
Do early choices like the Unusual PDA lock an ending?
They change your allies and missions, but Game8 notes you can still join the Ward in Dangerous Liaisons even after siding with Spark earlier. The three late choices in Subtle Matter, Dangerous Liaisons and The Last Wish are what lock the ending.
Are the ending trophies missable?
Only one ending trophy can come from each final run, but with saves before Subtle Matter, Dangerous Liaisons and the Doctor's house you can earn all four without starting over.
