To train Divination in RuneScape 3, harvest the highest wisp colony your level allows, convert memories at the rift for experience, and catch every chronicle fragment you see to charge the rift for bonus wisps. The route runs from pale wisps near Draynor at level 1 to incandescent wisps near Castle Wars at 95, with the Hall of Memories as an AFK option from 70. As of November 2026 the skill has had three rounds of changes this year, so a current rs3 divination guide needs the 2026 updates baked in.
We checked the route, rates and mechanics against the RuneScape Wiki's Divination and Divination training pages, including their 2026 update history, plus Jagex's November 2026 returners guide, in November 2026.
How Divination Works: Wisps, Memories and Rifts
Every Divination location has wisps that turn into springs when you interact with them. You harvest memories from the spring every three game ticks, and the energy you get per harvest depends on your level. Some harvests are enriched memories, which give double experience and extra energy. Springs last 60 seconds by default, and other players and perks can extend them up to a maximum of 2 minutes 45 seconds.

When your inventory fills, you take the memories to the rift in the middle of the colony. The rift offers three conversion modes: memories into energy, memories into experience, or memories into experience using energy. The energy-assisted mode gives the most experience per memory but eats into the energy you might otherwise sell or use, so most players pick plain experience while training and switch to energy only when they need a particular type for crafting.
The colonies are tiered. Each one matches a type of energy and a level requirement, and the higher the tier, the more experience and the more valuable the energy. That gives Divination a very clear training path: you move up one colony every five to ten levels, and you rarely need any supplies at all.
Training Route by Level
The RuneScape Wiki recommends training on world 79, the community Divination world, for most of the route, since more players at a colony means more chronicle fragments and longer springs. Its rates assume you are converting to experience, with a higher figure when you also use bought energy.
| Levels | Wisps | Location |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 10 | Pale | South-east of Draynor Village |
| 10 to 20 | Flickering | East of the Falador lodestone |
| 20 to 30 | Bright | East of Varrock |
| 30 to 40 | Glowing | South of Seers' Village |
| 40 to 50 | Sparkling | South-west of the Fremennik Slayer Dungeon |
| 50 to 60 | Gleaming | Centre of the Karamja jungle |
| 60 to 70 | Vibrant | North-west of the South Feldip Hills |
| 70 to 80 | Lustrous | East of the Slayer Tower |
| 80 to 85 | Brilliant | East of the Mage Training Arena |
| 85 to 90 | Radiant | Dragontooth Island |
| 90 to 95 | Luminous | South of Sophanem |
| 95 to 99+ | Incandescent | West of Castle Wars and Yanille |
A few stops have conditions. The luminous colony south of Sophanem requires partial progress in Icthlarin's Little Helper, and the elder wisps in the Elder Halls, an alternative from 75 to 80, require Fate of the Gods. The wiki's table puts incandescent wisps at about 97,000 experience per hour with bought energy and 82,000 without, against 5,000 and 4,000 at pale wisps, which shows how steeply the skill scales.
Quests can shortcut the early levels. The wiki lists One of a Kind for 5,000 Divination experience (requires 40 Divination), Hero's Welcome for 10,000 (requires 60) and Azzanadra's Quest for 25,000 (requires 70). Remember that quest rewards are not doubled during Double XP, so complete them outside the event.
What Changed for Divination in 2026
Divination has quietly received three rounds of adjustments this year. Older videos and guides do not reflect them, which is why rates you hear quoted may not match what you see in game.

- 16 February 2026, early-game rebalance: low-level gathering and converting gave more experience, and success chances got a flat boost. Pale memories, for example, gained 5 percent success, and their gathering experience rose from 1 to 1.3.
- 13 April 2026, aura overhaul: enrichment auras were removed and replaced with passive bonuses to the chance of an enriched memory at levels 39, 59, 79 and 99, worth 2, 4, 7 and 10 percent. Only the highest bonus you qualify for applies.
- 20 July 2026, mid-game rebalance: energy gathering chances went up, especially when you first unlock a new energy type, with gains ranging from about 0.5 percent for incandescent to 4 percent for gleaming.
The practical effect is that the early and middle levels feel smoother than they used to, and the enriched memory thresholds at 59, 79 and 99 give you small milestones to aim for. The wiki's upcoming updates page also notes that further Divination changes are on hold until more data is gathered, so do not plan around rumored changes as of November 2026.
Boosts Worth Using
Divination has several boosts, and the cheapest ones come from simply paying attention while you train.
- Chronicle fragments: they spawn with a 1 in 25 chance, and catching one within six seconds gives an enhanced fragment. Enhanced fragments charge the rift by 6.66 percent against 3.33 percent for normal ones.
- Memory Overflow: filling a rift to 100 percent spawns an enriched wisp and gives everyone nearby a 10-minute buff with bonus energy, experience and critical chance.
- Boons: each boon permanently adds 10 percent experience and energy when converting one tier, and you craft it with energy from the same tier or the one below.
- Gear: the full Diviner's outfit gives up to 6 percent experience and urns add 20 percent.
- Enhanced experience mode: gives 25 percent more experience than the normal mode but costs a lot of energy.
The Guthixian Cache is another small source. It needs level 35 Divination, and you deposit 800 memories at a rift to get in before collecting 100 points inside. It is a nice change of pace while you wait for a Memory Overflow to recharge.
Putting Your Energy to Use
Every colony leaves you with energy, and a lot of players let it pile up in the bank without a plan. Energy is the raw material for the skill's crafting side, and knowing what it makes helps you decide when to convert memories to experience and when to keep a stack of energy instead.
- Portents: single-use items that trigger automatically. The wiki lists portents of restoration, item protection, life and passage, and the portent of passage only works in Daemonheim.
- Signs: longer-lasting cousins of portents, covering respite, porter, item protection, life and death. Check each sign's tooltip in the Divination crafting menu to see which ones suit the way you play.
- Transmutation: turns a lower-tier item into a higher-tier one by consuming the item plus divine energy, with no randomness involved.
- Boons: as covered above, they cost energy of the same tier or the tier below and pay you back permanently.
One thing that has changed is divine locations. The wiki notes players can no longer create them, though existing ones still work, so older guides that recommend building divine trees or rocks for experience are out of date. A sensible habit is to keep enough of each energy for the boons and signs you actually use, and convert the rest straight to experience. If you are short of gold, extra energy from the mid tiers can also be sold on the Grand Exchange, where other players buy it for their own crafting.
Dungeoneering players have a particular reason to stockpile. Because portents of passage only function inside Daemonheim, raising Divination alongside Dungeoneering gives you a small supply of useful utility items for floor runs. Our Dungeoneering guide explains how floors work since the May 2026 remaster.
High-Level Alternatives From 70 Onward
Once you reach 70, you have options beyond wisp colonies. The Hall of Memories, beneath the Memorial to Guthix, is the classic AFK choice, with the wiki estimating about 45,000 experience per hour at level 70 rising to around 90,000 at 95 when done passively. Higher-effort play there raises the rate considerably.
- Ancestral energy on the Uncharted Isles: from 95, at about 107,000 experience per hour plus contract experience.
- Gate of Elidinis corrupt shards: available from level 1 after Ode of the Devourer, and the wiki estimates about 285,000 experience per hour at level 99.
- Colossi Divination: available from level 77 with partial progress in Heralds of Crimson. The wiki describes the activity but does not list a rate yet.
Divination also pairs well with other gathering skills. It shares the relaxed rhythm of Fishing, and our RS3 Fishing guide lists AFK spots for similar levels if you like alternating between the two. Divination can even drop clue scrolls while you train, at a 1 in 2,500 rate according to the wiki, and our clue scroll guide explains how to solve each step.
If you came back to the main game from the Equilibrium League, where experience multipliers ran as high as 16 times, regular rates can feel slow. Our Equilibrium League recap covers what carried over and what you can still spend your points on. And for the biggest single jump of the year, the November 2026 Double XP doubles wisp and rift experience, which our Double XP planning guide explains how to schedule.
Want a Head Start?
Divination is low cost but slow at the top end, and getting from 1 to 99 is a long commitment. The account listings on our RuneScape 3 page, posted by third-party sellers and updated daily, are one place players look for an account that already has skilling levels. Know the rules before you look: Jagex's Terms and Conditions ban the buying, selling and sharing of accounts and real-world trading, and say rights in every account belong to Jagex.
On your own account, the best plan is simple. Move up the colonies as you level, catch every fragment, and save your heaviest Divination sessions for the Double XP window.
