The Modern Warfare 4 campaign has been playable since Friday 16 October 2026, a full week before the game's 23 October launch. Sixteen missions, one open-ended level among them, and a story that alternates between two very different points of view. It is the one part of MW4 you can judge on finished code rather than beta footage.
The catch is who gets in. Campaign early access is tied to eligible digital pre-orders of the Standard Digital or Vault Edition - a physical standard copy does not include it. That single detail accounts for most of the confusion in the last few days, and it is worth getting straight before you buy anything.
This page covers how early access works, what it does and does not unlock, the full 16-mission list, how long the campaign actually runs, the difficulty options including the two that have to be earned, and which campaign rewards carry forward. Where a figure is an outlet estimate rather than an Activision statement, it says so.
Campaign early access: who can play right now
Early access opened on 16 October for eligible digital pre-orders and pre-purchases. Both the Digital Standard edition at $69.99 and the Vault edition at $99.99 qualify. A physical standard copy does not - early access is a digital pre-order benefit, and that is the single most common reason someone finds the campaign locked on launch week.
Platforms are PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, Battle.net or Xbox on PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. There is no PS4 or Xbox One release this year, so last-generation consoles are out entirely rather than simply late. The editions comparison breaks down what the Vault edition adds beyond early access, including the Signature Weapon Collection, a BlackCell season, a DMZ Deployment Bonus, 1,100 CP and 20 tier skips.
If you are installing now, be aware the download is large. Activision officially lists a 115 GB SSD requirement for PC. Reported console sizes vary considerably by platform and edition - figures from roughly 77 GB on Switch 2 up to around 194 GB on Xbox have circulated - but Activision has not published one universal console figure, so treat those as reported ranges rather than fact. Preload and file size goes through what has actually been confirmed.

What early access unlocks, and what waits for 23 October
Early access is the campaign and nothing else. Multiplayer and the full progression system arrive at launch on 23 October. Warzone integration follows with Season 1 on 6 November. DMZ got its own early access window starting 20 October, which is separate from the campaign unlock.
That distinction matters for anyone planning a camo or levelling grind. Campaign play does not feed multiplayer XP or weapon levels, so the week of early access is not a head start on progression - it is a week of story. Mode-specific content continues rolling out after launch too: Shipment arrives on 27 October, Possession on 29 October, Infected on 30 October, and Season 1 lands on 6 November. Release times has the unlock schedule in detail.
How long the MW4 campaign is
Activision has published no official runtime. What exists is review and guide estimates, and they cluster tightly enough to be useful:
IGN put it at seven to eight hours. PC Gamer landed around six. GameSpot reported roughly eight hours on normal difficulty. Guide sites quoting a standard first run tend to say eight to nine hours, with full campaign trophy or achievement completion taking somewhere around 14 to 18 hours across at least two playthroughs. Taken together, six to nine hours is the honest range for a first run on a normal difficulty, with the variance coming down to how much of the open-ended mission you explore.
All 16 missions in order
The mission list below is corroborated across independent campaign walkthroughs published after early access went live. Mission names occasionally differ between guides for the same level, so if one of these reads differently in your mission select, trust the game.
| # | Mission | # | Mission |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mayhem | 9 | Survivors |
| 2 | Out in the Cold | 10 | Stranded |
| 3 | Following Orders | 11 | Defection |
| 4 | Hired Gun | 12 | Counter Attack |
| 5 | Losing Ground | 13 | Escape |
| 6 | Traffic | 14 | Entrenched |
| 7 | Gone Dark | 15 | Decapitation |
| 8 | Assassins | 16 | Greater Good |
Completed missions can be replayed from the mission select menu, which matters for collectible cleanup and for the difficulty-specific challenges rather than forcing a full second run.

Structure: two protagonists and one open-ended mission
The 16 missions run across the Korean Peninsula, New York, Paris and Mumbai, and the story alternates between two threads: Private Park's squad fighting on the Korean Peninsula, and Captain Price running solo operations. That alternating structure is the campaign's main organising idea rather than a twist, and it is why the tone shifts noticeably between consecutive missions.
Most of the campaign is linear. Reviewers describe the majority of missions as fairly on-rails, in the tradition of recent Modern Warfare campaigns. The exception is Stranded, mission ten, which is open-ended. If you fast-travel and go straight for its three main objectives you can be through it in 20 to 30 minutes; if you explore properly it can absorb several hours on its own. Stranded also holds most of the campaign's notes and Yellow Supply Crates, so completionists should expect it to dominate their playtime.
There is no campaign co-op. The campaign is single-player only, though most missions put NPC teammates alongside you. Four missions - Mayhem, Following Orders, Hired Gun and Stranded - present choices, though coverage of the early-access build describes them as colour rather than branch points. No outlet reports multiple endings, so treat the mission list above as the sequence.
Difficulty options, including the two you have to earn
Six difficulty settings exist, but only four are available from the start: Recruit, Regular, Hardened and Veteran. Realism, which is effectively Veteran with a stripped-back HUD, unlocks once you have completed the campaign on any difficulty. YOLO unlocks after completing it on Realism. Difficulty can be changed at any point from the pause menu, which makes a single awkward mission much less punishing than it used to be.
A couple of achievements and trophies are tied to Hardened or higher on specific missions, so if you are chasing completion it is worth starting on Hardened rather than dropping back later. The replay option means this is recoverable either way.
Campaign rewards and what carries forward
Reward lists published after early access went live describe 16 campaign completion rewards awarded in a fixed order: eight base Operators, a calling card, an emblem, a loading screen, three Double XP tokens and two Double Weapon XP tokens. The Operators are described as standard roster characters rather than premium store skins. We have not been able to verify that list against an Activision page directly, so treat the exact composition as reported rather than confirmed.
Two things worth separating out. First, multiple guides agree there is no campaign completion weapon blueprint this year, which breaks from MW2 and MW3. Second, the Inner Circuit M4 blueprint and Hunter Killer Operator skin come from qualifying digital pre-orders, not from finishing missions - a distinction some coverage has blurred. Cosmetic campaign rewards carry into your account and become usable once the relevant mode is live, but campaign progress itself does not grant multiplayer XP or weapon levels.

Is it worth playing before launch
If you already have a qualifying digital pre-order, yes - it is finished content, reviews have been broadly positive, and playing it now means launch week is free for multiplayer. If you do not, buying up to the digital edition purely for a week of early access is a harder sell, since the campaign is not going anywhere on 23 October. Check our PC requirements page first if you are on PC and unsure whether your machine clears the bar. We keep our Modern Warfare 4 services page updated for the progression side once multiplayer opens.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many missions are in the MW4 campaign?
Sixteen, running across the Korean Peninsula, New York, Paris and Mumbai. The sequence is Mayhem, Out in the Cold, Following Orders, Hired Gun, Losing Ground, Traffic, Gone Dark, Assassins, Survivors, Stranded, Defection, Counter Attack, Escape, Entrenched, Decapitation and Greater Good.
How long does the MW4 campaign take to beat?
Activision has not published an official runtime. Review estimates range from about six hours (PC Gamer) to seven or eight (IGN) and around eight on normal (GameSpot), with guide sites quoting eight to nine for a standard run. Full trophy completion is reported at roughly 14 to 18 hours over at least two playthroughs.
Do I need a pre-order for MW4 campaign early access?
Yes - an eligible digital pre-order or pre-purchase of the Standard Digital or Vault Edition. A physical standard copy does not include campaign early access. Early access began on 16 October and the full game launches on 23 October.
Can you play the MW4 campaign in co-op?
No. The campaign is single-player only this year, although most missions include AI teammates. Completed missions can be replayed individually from the mission select menu.
What are the MW4 campaign difficulty settings?
Recruit, Regular, Hardened and Veteran are available from the start. Realism, which is Veteran with a limited HUD, unlocks after you complete the campaign on any difficulty, and YOLO unlocks after completing it on Realism. Difficulty can be changed at any time from the pause menu.
Does campaign progress help my multiplayer level?
No. Campaign play does not grant multiplayer XP or weapon levels, so the early access week is not a progression head start. Cosmetic campaign rewards do carry into your account and become usable once the relevant mode goes live.
