There is exactly one official Modern Warfare 4 storage figure, and it is for PC: 115 GB of SSD space, listed on Activision's own PC requirements page. That number appears identically across the minimum, recommended and ray-tracing tiers, alongside the TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot requirements.
Every other number you have seen is reported, not published. Activision has not released a universal console download size, and the figures circulating run from roughly 77 GB on Switch 2 to about 194 GB on Xbox Series X|S. That spread is not sloppy reporting - the gap is real, and it comes from how the game is packaged. Below is what each figure is, where it came from, and how much space to clear before Friday.
Preload has been open on every platform for days, so on 19 October the move is to start the download first and read second.
The one confirmed number: 115 GB on PC
Activision's PC specifications list 115 GB of SSD storage as the requirement at launch. Two things are easy to misread. It is a storage requirement rather than a download size - the installed footprint, which is what you need free. And Activision explicitly notes that mandatory updates may need more space on top. Treat 115 GB as the floor, not the ceiling.
It is also an SSD requirement, not a recommendation. MW4 streams assets aggressively enough that a mechanical drive is not on the supported list at any tier. If your only free space is on a spinning disk, that space does not count. The same 115 GB line sits in all three spec tiers, which our MW4 PC requirements breakdown goes through alongside the CPU and GPU targets.
Reported download sizes by platform
Here is the honest state of play, each figure labelled by what it actually is. Nothing in the console rows is an Activision statement.
| Platform | Figure | Where it comes from | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC (Steam / Battle.net / Xbox on PC) | 115 GB SSD required | Activision PC requirements page | Official |
| PC, reported download range | ~110-156 GB | Storefront listings and roundups; Battle.net reported higher than Steam | Reported, varies by storefront |
| PS5 | ~117 GB core, ~160 GB with all packs | PlayStation Game Size package listings | Reported, third-party tracker |
| Xbox Series X|S | ~194 GB (one listing: 194.32 GB) | Store listing, source not named by the outlets reporting it | Reported, weakest sourcing |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | 77.3 GB / 84.9 GB / "around 87 GB" | Tracker listing / Nintendo eShop listing / a developer comment | Reported, three conflicting numbers |
For a single planning number: clear 130 GB on PC, 180 GB on PS5, 200 GB on Xbox Series X|S and 100 GB on Switch 2. That covers the high end of the reported range plus patch headroom.
Why the numbers disagree so much
Four things drive the spread, and they are worth more to you than any single figure.
Modular content packs. MW4 ships as separate downloadable chunks rather than one monolith - campaign, multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone each arrive as their own package. Whether a quoted figure includes all of them is usually unstated, which is how one outlet reports 117 GB for PS5 and another reports 160 GB for the same platform.
The shared Call of Duty HQ launcher. HQ is shared with Warzone and the previous year's game, so if you already have it, part of the footprint is on your drive and your incremental download is smaller. Historically that difference has been enormous: Modern Warfare III was reported at roughly 149 GB on Steam fresh, but about 78 GB extra if HQ was already present.

Per-platform compression. Every console packages assets differently, and Switch 2 ships lower-resolution textures than PS5 and Series X. Its build being roughly half the size of the Xbox one is not a mistake; it is a different asset set.
Edition. Vault content adds operator packs and weapon blueprints - small in the scheme of things, but they move the number. Nobody has published a Standard-versus-Vault size comparison.
The PS5 pack breakdown, which is the clearest picture we have
PlayStation Game Size, a tracker that reads the PlayStation Store's package data, listed MW4's PS5 components individually: the main game at 28.702 GB, the Warzone Pack at 42.033 GB, the Campaign Pack at 42.171 GB, the Multiplayer Pack at 20.770 GB, DMZ Pack 01 at 5.777 GB and Shared Content Pack 01 at 19.602 GB. DMZ Pack 02 was listed without a size.
Add those and you land at roughly 159 GB, which is where the "160 GB on PS5" figure comes from. Two caveats that matter: the packs may overlap, so the sum is an upper bound rather than a measurement, and these are third-party tracker readings of store listings, not an Activision installation figure.
The useful part is the control it implies: skip the Warzone Pack and you save about 42 GB, and if you only want multiplayer, the campaign's 42 GB is optional too. That is the single biggest lever most players have.
Xbox's ~194 GB and why it is the scariest number
Around 194 GB is the figure doing the rounds for Xbox Series X|S, with one listing specifically at 194.32 GB. It is also the least well sourced number in the set: the outlets reporting it describe it as "listed" without naming where. One roundup gives a far wider 160-194 GB range for the same platform.
Our read is that 194 GB is most likely an everything-installed total rather than a mandatory download, matching the PS5 pattern where packs can be declined. That is inference, not confirmation. On a 1 TB Series X with a few other games installed, assume the worst and check the store page's own size readout before Friday.
Switch 2: the smallest install, and three different numbers
Switch 2 is where the reporting is messiest, with three figures in circulation. A tracker listing gave 77.304 GB. The Nintendo eShop listing showed around 84.9 GB for the standard edition. And a developer comment put it higher still: "I believe we landed on 87 gigabytes for launch", reportedly including the Call of Duty HQ launcher.

All three are plausibly correct for different things: a pre-launch package listing, a store-facing figure for the base edition, and the developer's all-in number. Practically, Switch 2 needs around 85-90 GB, which is more than the console's internal storage once the system takes its cut, so a microSD Express card is effectively mandatory - ordinary microSD and UHS-I cards will not work. Our Switch 2 version breakdown covers what else is and is not confirmed about that build.
Preload: when it opened and what to check
PC preload opened on Thursday 15 October at 9:00am PT - noon ET, 5:00pm BST, 6:00pm CEST. Console preload is less clear: one outlet reported Activision confirming Wednesday 14 October at 9:00pm PT across all platforms, while several others said no console time was ever announced. Both can be true if the announcement came late.
It does not really matter now. As of 19 October, preload is open on every platform for anyone with a digital pre-order. If your store is not offering it, the usual culprits are an unredeemed pre-order, a regional store mismatch, or a pending console system update. The MW4 unlock schedule has the rest of launch week.

How to actually free up the space
Deleting your previous Call of Duty is the obvious move, with a catch: remove the shared Call of Duty HQ and MW4 has to re-download it, so you can clear 100 GB and add 60 GB back. Remove the old game's content packs and leave HQ alone.
On external storage the rules differ per platform, and people get this wrong constantly. PS5 games cannot run from USB extended storage - they can be parked there, but must move back to the internal SSD or an installed M.2 drive to play. Xbox Series X|S need an official Storage Expansion Card; a USB drive will store MW4 but not run it. Switch 2 needs microSD Express specifically.
The better lever is declining packs you will not play. For a multiplayer-only player, skipping the Warzone and campaign packages is worth something like 84 GB on PS5 alone. If you are a camo grinder who lives in 6v6, that is an easy trade - and the launch map pool plus your edition choice matter far more to that grind than having every mode on disk. Leave 20-30 GB spare for the day-one patch, which nobody has sized yet.
If the download itself is the bottleneck, there is little to be done beyond a wired connection and pausing other devices. Everyone on Modern Warfare 4 is pulling the same files off the same CDNs this week, and launch-week throughput is what it is.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big is MW4 exactly?
On PC, 115 GB of SSD space is the official requirement. On consoles there is no official figure. Reported sizes run roughly 77-87 GB on Switch 2, 117-160 GB on PS5 and up to about 194 GB on Xbox Series X|S, depending on which packs are included.
Why is the Xbox version so much bigger than the PS5 one?
Most likely because the quoted Xbox figure is an everything-installed total while the lower PS5 figures exclude optional packs. Compression and asset packaging also differ per platform. Activision has not explained the gap, so this is inference.
Can I install MW4 on an external drive?
Only with the right hardware. PS5 titles must run from the internal SSD or an installed M.2 drive. Xbox Series X|S need an official Storage Expansion Card. Switch 2 requires microSD Express, not a standard microSD.
Can I skip parts of the download?
On PS5 the content arrives as separate packages, so declining the Warzone Pack or Campaign Pack saves roughly 42 GB each. Xbox appears to work similarly, though that is unconfirmed. Check your store page's component list first.
Will deleting Black Ops 7 free up space for MW4?
Partly. Its content packs will free real space, but Call of Duty HQ is shared, so removing HQ means MW4 re-downloads it. Delete the old title's packs and keep the launcher.
How much extra should I leave for the day-one patch?
Nobody has published a size. Recent Call of Duty launch patches have been in the 10-30 GB range, so 20-30 GB of headroom is sensible. Activision notes that mandatory updates may need space beyond the stated requirement.
