A Minecraft account ban appeal goes to whoever issued the ban: official Minecraft and Xbox enforcement are appealed through a Case Review request, while a ban from a server such as Hypixel is appealed on that server's own forum. Sending the right appeal to the right place is half the battle, because each system ignores appeals sent anywhere else. Below is how to identify who banned you, what each process asks for, and what the rules say about second chances.
We checked this against Minecraft.net's Community Standards and moderation articles, the Xbox Community Standards, the Minecraft EULA and Hypixel's support center in November 2026.
First, Work Out Who Banned You
Minecraft has three separate layers of enforcement, and they do not share an appeals desk. Before writing anything, read the exact ban message and match it to one of these.

- Official Minecraft enforcement: Mojang moderators act on reports from Realms, featured servers and the Java Player Reporting tool. The Minecraft EULA reserves the right to suspend or permanently ban anyone who breaks the Community Standards or the EULA.
- Xbox enforcement: Minecraft runs on Microsoft accounts, and the Xbox Community Standards apply to Xbox profiles and devices. Suspensions here can restrict specific features or, in severe cases, a whole profile.
- Server bans: private servers and networks such as Hypixel run their own rules and moderation. A Hypixel ban shows its reason when you try to log in, according to Hypixel's appeal guide, and has nothing to do with your access to the rest of Minecraft.
A quick test: if you can still play single-player and join other servers, you are dealing with a server ban. If Realms, featured servers or all online play are blocked, it is official enforcement. Minecraft.net notes that single-player content is not moderated at all.
What Gets Players Banned Officially
Mojang has been clear about the behavior it targets. In its article on the Java Player Reporting tool, Minecraft.net says players will not be banned just for swearing or profanity. The behaviors that lead to suspensions or bans are hate speech, bullying, harassment, sexual solicitation and making true threats to others, with a temporary suspension or permanent ban depending on severity and frequency.
The Community Standards add a zero-tolerance list that also covers terrorist or violent extremist content and fraud, which they define as any attempt to use deceit or misrepresentation for personal or financial gain. Reports are not automatic sentences: Minecraft.net says every player report is reviewed by an investigator who considers context, such as chat that relates to in-game combat.
Mojang's moderation article explains how far an official ban reaches. It says moderators can issue permanent bans that extend to all versions of Minecraft except Minecraft Dungeons, aimed at the most severe offenses, and that banned users receive a message explaining the ban along with information on cancelling a Realms subscription.
How to Appeal an Official Minecraft Ban
For official Minecraft enforcement, the route is a Case Review. Minecraft.net's Community Standards page links to a Case Review form on the Minecraft Help Center for enforcement actions that meet the criteria, and the Player Reporting article says that if you feel you were banned unjustly, you may submit an appeal through the Case Review Request.

- Read the ban message carefully and note the date, the platform and any category it gives.
- Sign in with the affected Microsoft account so the review is attached to the right profile.
- Open the Case Review form from the Community Standards page on Minecraft.net.
- Explain the context honestly. Investigators already consider context, so a calm, specific account of what happened carries more weight than a general denial.
- Submit and keep a record. Save the confirmation and a copy of what you wrote in case you need to follow up.
The Xbox Community Standards point to the same idea for Xbox-side restrictions: they direct players to their Enforcement history, or the Xbox Assist app on console, to see suspensions, and to a page explaining how to submit a case review if they want to appeal.
Xbox Strikes and Permanent Suspensions
Because Minecraft uses Microsoft accounts, Xbox's enforcement system can affect your Minecraft access. The Xbox Community Standards describe a strike system attached to every enforcement, with severity based on the activity, and say strikes remain on a player's record for six months.
- Temporary suspensions usually remove one or more features for a period of time, targeting the features most closely tied to the behavior.
- Permanent suspensions are reserved for severe violations or repeated behavior that earlier action did not correct. The standards say the owner then forfeits all licenses for games and other content, Xbox subscription time and Microsoft account balances.
- Ban evasion is its own violation: the standards list creating alternate Microsoft accounts to get around a suspension or restriction as prohibited.
That last point matters for anyone tempted to just make a new account. Doing it to dodge an active suspension breaks the same rules that produced the ban. If you are not sure whether a restriction is a ban or a technical problem, our guide to what to check when a migrated account seems missing covers the other reasons a game can vanish from an account.
Server Bans: How Hypixel Appeals Work
Hypixel is the server people most often ask about, and its process is well documented. Its support team does not handle ban, mute or warning appeals directly unless the punishment reason says to. Instead you link your Minecraft account to a Hypixel Forums account, then fill in the appeal form on the forum's Create an Appeal page. If you cannot join the network, you can connect to the forums.hypixel.net server address to get a linking code.
- One appeal per punishment: Hypixel's FAQ says once your first appeal is submitted, no further appeals can be made for that mute or ban.
- Appeal promptly: it notes that lengthy bans or mutes are less likely to be overturned.
- Evidence hosts: extra evidence must be uploaded to approved sites such as Imgur, YouTube, Gyazo or Medal.tv.
- Watchdog bans: Watchdog is Hypixel's server-side cheat detection, and a Watchdog punishment also wipes you from leaderboards.
- Bought accounts: the appeal FAQ states that accounts purchased from third-party sellers will not be unbanned because of their history of breaking the rules.
- Discord bans: Hypixel says bans from its Discord cannot be appealed.
Other servers set their own processes, and Mojang's Player Reporting article notes that private servers function independently from Mojang Studios. Look for an appeals link on the server's website or Discord. To understand what ranks and perks are at stake on Hypixel, see our explainer on Hypixel ranks from VIP to MVP++.
If Someone Else Got You Banned
Bans earned by a hijacker still land on your account, and every system above says so. Hypixel's appeal FAQ answers the question directly: players are fully responsible for actions taken on their accounts, even when compromised. Hypixel also uses a separate Suspicious Activity Account Block for accounts that look compromised, which needs its own appeal followed by a 14-day recovery period.
Secure the account first, then appeal. Change the password, turn on two-step verification and review recent sign-in activity, as covered in our Minecraft account recovery guide. An appeal sent while a stranger still has access is likely to be followed by another ban.
Parents dealing with a child's ban should also look at the account's settings. Child accounts start with multiplayer and communication turned off, and the controls at account.xbox.com/settings let you decide what to re-enable; our walkthrough on setting up a Minecraft account for a child covers each toggle.
Staying Clear of the Next Ban
Most server bans come from a short list of habits, and Hypixel's published rules are a useful checklist even for other servers.
- Client mods: Hypixel's Watchdog guide says OptiFine is allowed because its main purpose is a frame-rate boost, but any modification that gives an advantage over other players should not be used. A mod that is running but not actively used can still send irregular data and get you punished.
- Macros and auto-clickers: listed by Watchdog as a ban reason, along with disallowed modifications, scripting and exploiting under the server rules' Unfair Advantages section.
- Giveaways and outside trading: Hypixel's rules ban giveaways and say participating can put you at risk of punishment, and they prohibit trading game content or accounts through outside platforms.
- Account sharing: the rules list sharing accounts between players under Account Abuse, and you remain responsible for whatever someone else does while logged in.
Two reassurances from the same guide are worth knowing. Watchdog does not ban players for a laggy connection, and it treats every rank the same. Hypixel's rules also say your past mutes and bans affect the length of future punishments, that multiple punishments block competitive play, and that good behavior over time can shorten future penalties. A clean record is worth protecting.
A Note on Replacement Accounts
Appeal rules follow every account, including ones that change hands: Hypixel will not unban accounts bought from third parties, and Xbox prohibits using another account to get around a suspension. The store's Minecraft hub lists accounts from marketplace sellers, including Java, Bedrock and Hypixel accounts, and the Microsoft Services Agreement says users may not sell the services or transfer licenses or rights to access them.
