Minecraft Account Recovery: How to Get Back In (2026)

Minecraft YouTube thumbnail: I DIDN’T Migrate my Minecraft Account - Here’s What Happened

In practice, Minecraft account recovery almost always means recovering the Microsoft account that owns your copy of the game, because every current edition signs in through Microsoft. Whether you forgot a password, lost the phone that held your security codes, or someone took over the account, the fix runs through Microsoft's reset and recovery tools rather than a separate Minecraft form. Below you will find each situation, the evidence that helps, and what to lock down once you are back in.

We checked this against Minecraft.net's account and migration articles, the Microsoft account recovery form itself, the Microsoft Services Agreement, the Minecraft EULA and Hypixel's support center in November 2026.

Why Your Minecraft Login Is Really a Microsoft Login

Minecraft.net states that since 25 July 2022, all players need a Microsoft account to play every version of Minecraft. That single account holds your Java and Bedrock licenses, your Marketplace purchases, your Java profile name and skin, and any capes you have collected. So when people say they lost their Minecraft account, what they have actually lost is the email address and password they type into the Minecraft Launcher, the console sign-in screen or the mobile app. Recover that Microsoft account and everything attached to it comes back with it.

There is one group this does not help. Old Mojang accounts had to be moved to Microsoft accounts, and Minecraft.net's final migration notice says that starting September 19, 2023, unmigrated Mojang accounts could no longer sign in to migrate and support stopped handling migration tickets. The same page now carries an update saying it is no longer possible to migrate unmigrated accounts. If you never made the move, there is no recovery path left for that login. If you believe you did migrate and the game still looks missing, our explainer on what to check when a migrated account seems to have vanished walks through the usual causes, which are rarely deletion.

Purchases made on a platform that does not require a Microsoft account follow that platform's rules. The Minecraft EULA names PlayStation, Nintendo, Apple iOS and Google Play as examples, so a copy bought on one of those stores is recovered by getting back into the matching store account, even if you also signed in with a Microsoft account for cross-play or Realms.

Forgotten Password or a Lost Verification Code

A plain forgotten password is the easy case. Microsoft's shortcut aka.ms/recoverAccount opens the Microsoft password reset page at account.live.com, which verifies you through the security info already on the account before letting you set a new password. Once that is done you can sign straight back into Minecraft with the new password.

  1. Use a device and location you have played on before; Microsoft's own recovery form gives the same advice for its questions.
  2. Enter the sign-in name exactly as it appears in your Minecraft Launcher or console profile.
  3. Choose a security contact you still control and complete the verification step.
  4. Choose a new password that you have never used anywhere else, then sign in to Minecraft again on each device.

Two-step verification changes the picture. The Microsoft recovery form carries a clear note: if you have turned on two-step verification, you cannot recover your account through that form. In that case your way back in is a recovery code or backup method you saved when you switched the feature on. Hypixel's account security guide makes the same point from a player's angle, telling you to keep a copy of your backup codes because losing both your phone and those codes locks you out.

Console players should also remember how they signed in originally. Minecraft.net explains that on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch you sign in by entering a short code at aka.ms/remoteconnect on another device, so a password reset on the web is all you need before you repeat that code step on the console.

Using the Microsoft Account Recovery Form

When you can no longer receive codes at any of your security contacts, the Microsoft account recovery form at account.live.com/acsr is the route left. It first asks which Microsoft account you are trying to get back into, then asks for a contact email address that must be different from the one you are recovering. Microsoft uses that second address to tell you the outcome.

The form then works through identity questions. On the live form we checked, they include your name and date of birth, the country or region where you created the account, previous passwords (with an option to add more than one), which Microsoft products you have used with the account, whether you have bought anything from Microsoft, and, for Xbox users, which Xbox console you use most often. It also suggests asking friends for the subject lines of emails you sent them if the account was an Outlook or Hotmail address. If you say you have made purchases, it asks for payment details to prove ownership and notes that your card will not be charged.

  • Old passwords: even a password from years ago counts, so list every one you remember.
  • Purchase details: the date and payment method of your Minecraft purchase, Minecoins top-ups or Realms subscriptions help prove the account is yours.
  • Xbox details: your gamertag and the console you play on are part of the Xbox questions.
  • Location: the form advises answering from a device and location you have used before.

After you submit, the confirmation screen says Microsoft will email your contact address to tell you whether you provided enough information, and that the review usually takes about 24 hours. Answer as many questions as you can rather than leaving blanks, because the form itself tells you to give your best guess when unsure.

When Someone Else Took Over the Account

A hijacked account usually shows itself in Minecraft before you notice anything in your inbox: the Java profile name changes, an unfamiliar skin appears, or a server suddenly blocks you. Start with the recovery form above, because the attacker has probably changed the password and security info. Do not pay anyone who offers to recover it for you, and never type your password into a site that promises free capes or ranks in exchange. Hypixel's security guide specifically warns that offers of free MINECON capes are likely phishing, since all MINECON cape links have been retired.

Damage done during the takeover can follow the account. Hypixel issues Suspicious Activity Account Blocks when its systems detect unusual activity suggesting a compromise. Its support guide says those blocks are not handled by the support team: you create a forum account, link your Minecraft account, submit an appeal, and once the appeal is accepted the account stays blocked for a 14-day recovery period. Hypixel also states that players are responsible for all actions taken on their accounts, so a ban earned by a hijacker is still a ban on your profile. Our guide to appealing Minecraft and server bans covers the Mojang, Xbox and Hypixel processes side by side.

If the attacker renamed your Java profile, you may not be able to switch back straight away. The Minecraft Wiki notes that Java names can be changed no more than once every 30 days and that a previous name only becomes available to others after 37 days, which usually gives you time to reclaim it. The full rules are in our Java and Bedrock name change guide.

Locking the Account Down Once You Are Back In

Recovery is only half the job. The same weak spot that let you lose access can let it happen again, so spend ten minutes on these steps the day you get back in.

  • Turn on two-step verification at account.microsoft.com, as Hypixel's account security guide recommends, and save the recovery code somewhere offline.
  • Use a long, unique password. Hypixel suggests at least 12 characters with a mix of letters, numbers and symbols, and never reusing it on another site.
  • Review your sign-in activity in your Microsoft account and change the password immediately if anything looks unfamiliar.
  • Update your security info so the recovery email and phone number are ones you will still control in five years.
  • Check the address bar. Hypixel publishes its list of official domains and says any other site claiming to be Hypixel has no affiliation with it.
  • Keep the account active. The Microsoft Services Agreement says you must sign in at least once in a two-year period to keep a Microsoft account active.

Hypixel's guide also advises against sharing your login with anyone, friends and family included, since every action on the account is your responsibility.

Records Worth Saving Before Anything Goes Wrong

Most failed recoveries fail because the owner cannot answer the form's questions. A short private note solves that. Write down the email address and gamertag on the account, the date of birth you entered when you created it, the country you created it in, the passwords you have used, and where and when you bought Minecraft. Keep receipts for Minecraft, Minecoins and Realms purchases, because purchase information is one of the strongest proofs the form accepts.

It also helps to know roughly how old the account is. Java accounts that carry the Migrator cape, for example, existed as Mojang accounts before the move to Microsoft. Our guide on finding out when a Minecraft account was created shows the clues that still work now that Mojang's public name history is gone.

Starting Over on a Different Account

If recovery fails for good, the straightforward option is buying Minecraft again on a fresh Microsoft account and rebuilding from there. The store's Minecraft hub also shows account listings from marketplace sellers, covering Java and Bedrock accounts, Hypixel accounts and accounts with capes. Weigh that carefully: the Microsoft Services Agreement, which you accept alongside the Minecraft EULA, says you may not sell the software or services or transfer software licenses or any rights to access or use the services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Minecraft support recover my account directly?

Access problems are solved by recovering the Microsoft account, because Minecraft has required a Microsoft account on every version since 25 July 2022. Use Microsoft's password reset or the account recovery form at account.live.com/acsr.

How long does the Microsoft recovery form take?

The form's confirmation screen says the review usually takes about 24 hours, and the result is sent to the separate contact email address you entered.

Can I recover an old Mojang account that I never migrated?

No. Minecraft.net says migration closed on September 19, 2023, and that it is no longer possible to migrate unmigrated accounts.

What if I have two-step verification on and lost my phone?

The recovery form notes it cannot be used when two-step verification is turned on, so you need the recovery code or backup method you saved when you enabled it.

Will I get my Java username back after a hacker changed it?

Usually. Java names can change once every 30 days and an old name is only released to others after 37 days, so you can normally switch back once the cooldown ends.

Does Hypixel lift a block after my account is recovered?

Only after an appeal. You link your account on the Hypixel forums, appeal, and once accepted the account stays blocked for a 14-day recovery period.
