Helldivers 2 Exosuit Guide: All 4 Mechs Compared

Helldivers 2 has four exosuits as of November 2026: the EXO-45 Patriot and EXO-49 Emancipator, which unlock at level 25 for Requisition Slips, and the EXO-51 Lumberer and EXO-55 Breakthrough from the Exo Experts Premium Warbond. Each is a stratagem you call down with three uses per mission, and each pairs two arm weapons with a heavily armored hull. Here is how they compare, how to cut their cooldown and how to keep one alive once you climb in.

We checked this against the Helldivers wiki's exosuit pages (updated 25 October 2026), Arrowhead's Warbond and patch announcements on Steam, and the wiki's Democracy Space Station page.

The Four Exosuits at a Glance

Two of the suits came from the community's war effort. The Patriot first appeared on Tien Kwan in March 2024 and became permanently available after the "Liberate Tien Kwan" Major Order, while the Emancipator was the reward for liberating the Automaton Petafactory on Varylia 5 in May 2024. Today both unlock at level 25 for 20,000 Requisition Slips each. The other two arrived in April 2026 with the Exo Experts Premium Warbond, which launched on 28 April: the Lumberer sits on page 2 and the Breakthrough on page 3, each costing 50 medals once you own the Warbond.

The choice comes down to the job. The Patriot is the all-rounder, the Emancipator is the anti-armor and anti-structure specialist, the Lumberer mixes crowd control with heavy shots, and the Breakthrough is the frontline brawler that blocks damage with its shield.

Shared Stats: Uses, Cooldown and Durability

All four suits share the same core stratagem stats on the wiki. Each takes 10.5 seconds to call in and gives you three uses per mission, a number raised from two in March 2025. Only one exosuit can be taken at stratagem selection, apart from certain Galactic Events, so you pick one suit per mission.

The cooldown is where sources do not quite line up. Arrowhead's 6.3.0 patch notes in June 2026 said mech cooldown was cut "from 10 minutes down to 8." The wiki's exosuit pages, updated in late October 2026, list a 420 second base cooldown, which is 7 minutes. We could not find a later patch note explaining the gap, so expect somewhere between 7 and 8 minutes and watch the in-game timer.

Durability got a big boost through 2026. The 6.2.2 patch in April made exosuits die only when their main health runs out, and 6.3.0 in June raised main health to 1,800 with heavy armor on the hull. On the wiki's numbers, the arms have 800 health with medium armor, the legs 550, and the cockpits and hips 400 each with heavy armor. Arrowhead said the intent was for suits to ignore more small attacks and withstand medium attacks better, so scavengers and Automaton small arms barely scratch them now.

Patriot and Emancipator: The Level 25 Pair

The EXO-45 Patriot carries a rocket pod on the left arm and a minigun on the right. The minigun holds 1,350 rounds after an October 2025 increase, fires at 1,200 rounds per minute and takes a second to wind up and a second to wind down. The rocket pod carries 14 rockets and is your answer to heavier targets.

Use the short wind-down to your advantage: releasing the trigger briefly between targets saves a lot of ammo, and the wiki points out that the stomp can finish small enemies without firing at all. Save rockets for Chargers, Hulks and other armored threats rather than spending them on chaff.

The EXO-49 Emancipator swaps that mix for two autocannons, one per arm. Each holds 100 rounds, fires at 175 rounds per minute and deals 300 ballistic damage per shot, or 150 against durable targets. That makes it the stronger choice against Automatons, structures and armored enemies, and a weaker one against swarms of small bugs, where each heavy shell is overkill. Fire the two arms in turns rather than together when you are facing single targets, so you are never fully empty.

Both suits unlock at the same level, so many players buy both and pick per front: Patriot for Terminids and the Illuminate's Voteless hordes, Emancipator for Automatons. Our level guide covers how quickly you reach 25 and which other stratagems unlock along the way.

Lumberer and Breakthrough: The Exo Experts Suits

The EXO-51 Lumberer pairs an anti-tank cannon on the right arm with a flamethrower on the left. The cannon holds 25 shells at 30 rounds per minute, and the flamethrower carries 500 fuel, about 62 seconds of sustained fire. The wiki's advice is to burn hordes of small and medium enemies and save the cannon for large targets, because exosuit ammo cannot be replenished. The flamethrower got a clear buff on 20 October 2026 in patch 7.2.0, when its flame particle damage rose from 3 to 8 so it performs closer to the infantry flamethrowers.

The EXO-55 Breakthrough is built for the front line. Its right arm is a flak cannon with a six-round capacity that fires 40 pellets per shot and must be fully reloaded before firing again. Its left arm is a ballistic shield with 5,000 health and heavy armor, which also works as a melee bash for 500 damage. The wiki notes that a well-timed bash can interrupt a charging Charger, sparing your hull a hit. Use the shield as a moving wall for your squad when pushing into Automaton fire.

Putting new exosuits in a paid Warbond drew criticism, and Arrowhead addressed it in May 2026, saying it had seen the feedback about how players expect to unlock major gameplay items and that players will be getting other vehicles through gameplay in the future. The Exo Experts Warbond also includes the O-2 Heavy Operator and O-3 Free Spirit armors with the Oxygenator perk, plus an "Exosuit Certified" title.

Which Exosuit to Unlock First

At 20,000 Requisition Slips each, the two level 25 suits are a real investment for a new player, so the order matters. If you mostly fight Terminids or the Illuminate, buy the Patriot first: the minigun handles swarms and the rockets cover the occasional heavy. If you mostly fight Automatons, the Emancipator's autocannons earn their keep faster against Devastators, Hulks and fabricator structures. Our Requisition Slips guide covers the quickest ways to bank those 20,000.

The Exo Experts pair is a different kind of decision, because you are paying with Super Credits for the Warbond and then medals for the pages. Buy it if the Lumberer's flame and cannon combination or the Breakthrough's shield appeals to you, not just because more suits sounds better. Whatever you pick, call the suit in before a fight starts rather than during it: 10.5 seconds is a long time to wait while a Charger closes in.

Cutting the Cooldown

Two modifiers shorten exosuit cooldowns, and the wiki lists exactly how far:

  • Morale Augmentation, a bridge ship module, cuts all stratagem cooldowns by 5 percent, taking the 420 second base to 399 seconds.
  • The Democracy Space Station's Exosuit Reserves effect cuts exosuit cooldowns by 35 percent on the planet the station orbits, down to 273 seconds.
  • Both together bring the cooldown to 252 seconds, a little over four minutes.

The DSS bonus is the big one. If you want to run mechs all mission, check which planet the station is orbiting and dive there. Our DSS guide explains how the station moves and how to check its current effects. Shorter cooldowns also make it easier to spend all three uses before extraction, which many pilots fail to do.

Piloting Tips That Keep a Mech Alive

Exosuits are tougher than ever, but they still die to a few predictable things. The wiki's notes and recent patches suggest these habits:

  • Watch friendly fire. High-damage weapons like the AC-8 Autocannon, EAT-17 and R-36 Eruptor can wreck a suit, so tell your squad when you are in one.
  • Mind your flanks. Exosuits turn slowly, which makes fast flankers dangerous. Keep a teammate on foot behind you.
  • Bring a Shield Generator Pack. With the SH-32 equipped, the barrier blocks some frontal attacks, though hits at the waist, from below or from behind still land.
  • Use the cockpit as a reset. Climbing in restores your stamina, and you can stim from inside.
  • Loot on the way. The stomp opens cargo containers at points of interest, so you can collect without leaving the suit.
  • Park safely. Since the 7.1.0 update in September 2026, enemies no longer target unoccupied vehicles, so stepping out for an objective is less risky than it used to be.

Pair the suit with a squad whose throwables cover the jobs a mech is clumsy at, such as dropping explosives into Bug Holes and Fabricators; our grenade guide lists which ones close holes and fabricators. For armor, our armor passives guide covers Oxygenator and the explosive-resistance picks that help when your mech goes down. The broader vehicles guide covers the FRV and Bastion tank.

Getting Mech-Ready Sooner

Exosuits need level 25 and 20,000 Requisition Slips each, or medals and Super Credits for the Exo Experts pair. If you would rather skip that stretch, the store's Helldivers 2 boosting hub lists level boosts, Requisition Slips, medals and Super Credits for Steam and PlayStation. Check current availability on each listing first, since services rotate. The hub does not list Xbox.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many exosuits are in Helldivers 2?

Four as of November 2026: the EXO-45 Patriot, EXO-49 Emancipator, EXO-51 Lumberer and EXO-55 Breakthrough.

What level do you unlock the exosuit in Helldivers 2?

The Patriot and Emancipator become available at level 25 and cost 20,000 Requisition Slips each. The Lumberer and Breakthrough come from the Exo Experts Warbond instead.

How many times can you call an exosuit per mission?

Three uses per mission, raised from two in a March 2025 patch.

Can you resupply an exosuit?

No. The wiki notes exosuit ammo cannot be replenished, so pace your fire and call a fresh suit when the current one runs dry.

Which exosuit is best against Automatons?

The Emancipator's twin autocannons handle armor and structures well, and the Breakthrough's shield soaks frontal fire. The Patriot is the better pick for big swarms of small enemies.

Does the DSS reduce exosuit cooldown?

Yes. On the planet it orbits, its Exosuit Reserves effect cuts exosuit cooldowns by 35 percent, to 273 seconds on the wiki's figures.
