The Onryo armor is Atsu's starting armor in Ghost of Yotei: it is equipped automatically when you first take control, and it upgrades on its own through the main story, up to Onryo Armor V, rather than at an armorer. Its perks are built around the Terrify status. Kills with Spirit attacks or thrown melee weapons can terrify nearby enemies, terrified enemies can bring your wolf into the fight, and at the final rank terrified enemies take massively increased damage.
We checked this against Push Square's armor guide, PowerPyx's armor locations and platinum roadmap, the PlayStation Blog's builds guide and Complete Edition coverage, PowerPyx's Most Wanted roadmap and Sucker Punch's official patch notes in November 2026.
What the Onryo Armor Is
Push Square's armor guide gives its description as "The armour of a wandering hunter on the lonely path of revenge." It is the set Atsu wears from the opening hours, and unlike the other base-game armor sets you never have to earn it through a tale, a bounty or a collectible. That also means it cannot be missed, which matters for anyone chasing the For All Occasions trophy, since that trophy needs all 12 base-game armor sets.

The other eleven sets come from all over Ezo. PowerPyx's armor list includes the Mercenary Attire from Main Tale: The Oni, the Nine Tail Armor from Main Tale: The Kitsune, the Bounty Master Armor from the Soma the Condemned bounty, Taro's Armor from a boy you can meet at camps, the Spider Lily, Dragonfly, Undying, Crimson Kimono and Ginji's Guard sets from various tales, the Robes for Sitturaynu from The Heart of an Ainu and the Fundoshi for finishing every Hot Spring. The Onryo set is the baseline you will measure all of them against.
The name runs through Atsu's whole kit, which helps explain why the armor fits her so well. Onryo is one of the four skill categories in the Growth menu, alongside Melee, Revenge and Wolf, and it covers core combat techniques such as Disarm Counter and Onryo's Strike. Onryo's Howl is her fear-inducing special, and Onryo's Will is the second chance that keeps her in a fight. Even the trophy list leans on it: finishing the story unlocks The Onryō Rests, and the platinum is called Legendary Onryō.
Onryo Armor Perks at Every Rank
The perks build on each other, and Push Square lists them rank by rank. The descriptions use relative terms such as minor, moderate, major and massive rather than percentages, so the table below repeats that wording instead of guessing at numbers.
| Rank | What changes |
|---|---|
| Onryo Armor II | Spirit Attack or thrown melee kills get a minor chance to Terrify nearby enemies; the wolf gets a moderate chance to appear when enemies are Terrified; Terrified enemies take moderately increased damage |
| Onryo Armor III | The chance to Terrify nearby enemies rises to moderate |
| Onryo Armor IV | The wolf's chance to appear when enemies are Terrified rises to major |
| Onryo Armor V | Terrified enemies take massively increased damage |
Rank I, the version you start with, carries no perk bonus according to Playnews' upgrade guide, which matches Push Square listing perks only from rank II onward. In practice the set does nothing special for the first stretch of the game and then grows into a strong crowd-control armor once ranks III to V arrive, because each rank strengthens a different link in the same chain.
How the Onryo Armor Upgrades
You do not upgrade this set yourself. PowerPyx's armor guide states that its upgrades are automatic story unlocks up to Onryo Armor V, and Playnews adds that it does not use the armorer Ginji, materials or money at all; it reaches rank V once the hunt for the Yotei Six is complete, before the final act. Most other sets improve the normal way, at armorers such as the one at Yotei's Shadow Inn in Yotei Grasslands.

Guides disagree about exactly which main tale grants which rank, and there is a good reason for that. PowerPyx's story length guide notes that the three long missions, The Oni, The Kitsune and The Saito Brothers, can be played in any order, so the rank you hold after any given tale depends on your route. The practical takeaway is simple: keep following the main story and the armor takes care of itself, with nothing missable along the way.
New Game Plus adds a wrinkle. When patch 1.100 introduced it on November 24, 2025, the PlayStation Blog announced an additional tier of upgrades for existing armor sets and weapons alongside the new, harder difficulty options. Sucker Punch did not single out the Onryo set in that announcement, so check your own armor menu in a New Game Plus save rather than assuming it gains an extra rank.
Building Around Terrify
The armor only shines if you trigger Terrify often, and the game gives you several ways to do that. Onryo's Howl unlocks automatically during Main Tale: The Old Inn early in the game; once the bars beside your weapon charge up, it creates a gust that knocks down the enemy in front of you so you can finish him instantly, and the trophy The Horror asks you to make 20 enemies collapse in fear this way.
The armor's own trigger is a kill with a Spirit attack or a thrown melee weapon, so disarming enemies feeds it directly. PowerPyx's trophy notes point to two Onryo techniques: Disarm Counter, which disarms an enemy charging a yellow glowing attack when you hold and release at the right moment, and Onryo's Strike, which spends three Spirit to disarm instantly with a chance to kill outright. Pick up the dropped weapon and throw it back for the kill, and that kill gives the armor its chance to terrify the enemies around you.
The wolf completes the loop. Each Wolf Den you finish unlocks a Wolf skill, and options such as Wolf Strike Summon add more chances for your companion to appear. Add a charm that spreads fear, such as the Charm of the Fearful End, which the PlayStation Blog's builds guide describes as giving assassinations a chance to terrify nearby enemies, and a rank V Onryo build can turn one kill into a rout. Our best skills guide lists the techniques worth buying for this style.
Because the Onryo playstyle means standing in the middle of large groups, round it out with survival charms. The builds guide highlights the Charm of Masakado, which makes Onryo's Will revive you at full health, and Father's Charm, which restores moderate health on perfect parries; both come from Shrine Climbs, so they are easy to collect while you explore. With those equipped, a mistimed dodge in a crowded camp costs you far less, and the armor's damage bonus has time to do its work.
Dyes, Looks and the October 2026 Appearance Option
If you love the Onryo perks but not the look, or the reverse, the free patch that arrived with the Complete Edition on October 1, 2026 solves it. That update added an option to keep one armor set's appearance while using another set's stats, so you can now wear the Onryo silhouette over a different set's perks or hide the Onryo perks under another armor entirely.
Most Wanted is also a source of Onryo cosmetics. PowerPyx found that the cheapest item at that mode's boss token vendor is "The Spider's Armour" dye for the Onryo armor, priced at two tokens, and other boss dyes sit alongside it; our Most Wanted guide explains how tokens are earned. Players who pre-ordered the Complete Edition or its upgrade by September 30 also received an early unlock of the Sakai Armor, a throwback to Jin's family armor from Ghost of Tsushima, on October 1. Earning the platinum adds an armor dye as well, and patch 1.101 fixed a rare bug that stopped that dye from appearing across separate save files.
When to Swap the Onryo Armor for Another Set
Ghost of Yotei's builds system makes swapping painless. The PlayStation Blog's builds guide says you start with three saved builds and can eventually hold five, and patch 1.100 added one more loadout slot on top of that. Keeping a rank V Onryo build in one slot and specialist sets in the others is the most flexible way to play.
That same guide shows where other sets beat Onryo. The Armor of the Undying rewards weapon-aligned melee, with staggers restoring health, a wider perfect parry and dodge window and focus attacks dealing more stagger. The Crimson Kimono suits stealth with chain kunai assassinations and reduced detection. The Dragonfly Armor empowers well-timed bow shots, the Bounty Master Armor trades regular parries for wider perfect parries and extra counters, and the Nine Tail Armor boosts quickfire damage and status effects.
Onryo stays the best choice for open fights against large groups, where every kill can cascade into terrified enemies and wolf attacks. Since New Game Plus carries every armor, ability and weapon over from your first playthrough, you never lose it when you start again, and our New Game Plus guide covers what else comes with you.
Starting Over With Every Armor Set
If you want the whole armor collection without replaying the tales that award it, the store's NG+ starter save includes all 12 armor sets alongside max character health and stamina, every melee and ranged weapon, all skills, 62 helmets, 72 charms, 74 masks and all 118 weapon skins, with key resources stacked to 9,999,999.
New Game is already completed on that save, so you can open New Game Plus whenever you like, with the prologue skipped automatically, and its page states that applying it does not affect trophies. It is a PS5 save, the game itself is not included, and the hub notes it can be applied even if you have not played yet. See every option on the Ghost of Yotei hub.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you upgrade the Onryo armor in Ghost of Yotei?
You do not do it manually. The Onryo armor upgrades automatically as you progress through the main story, reaching Onryo Armor V once the Yotei Six hunt is complete, and it does not use an armorer or materials.
What does Terrify do in Ghost of Yotei?
Terrified enemies are easier to finish. The Onryo armor makes them take extra damage and can summon your wolf against them, and Onryo's Howl can make enemies collapse in fear for an instant kill.
Can you dye the Onryo armor?
Yes. The Most Wanted mode's boss token vendor sells dyes for it, starting with The Spider's Armour dye at two tokens, and other dyes come from merchants in the main game.
Is the Onryo armor the best armor in Ghost of Yotei?
It is one of the best for open fights against groups once it reaches rank V. For stealth, ranged play or one-on-one duels, specialist sets such as the Crimson Kimono, Dragonfly Armor or Bounty Master Armor do more.
Can you wear the Onryo look with another armor's perks?
Yes. The free October 1, 2026 patch added an option to keep one armor set's appearance while using another set's stats, which works in both directions.
Does the Onryo armor carry over into New Game Plus?
Yes. Sucker Punch confirmed that all armors, abilities and weapons from your first playthrough are available from the start of New Game Plus.
