Is Fallout 76 Crossplay? What Works in 2026

No, there is still no crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox and PC in Fallout 76 as of November 2026. The one exception is on PC, where Steam players and Microsoft Store or Xbox app players share the same servers and can team up in every mode. Bethesda's leads said in February 2026 that they are looking into Fallout 76 crossplay but that it is not in their immediate plans, and the native PS5 and Xbox Series versions released in September 2026 did not change who can play with whom. Here is exactly what works, what Bethesda has said, and your options for playing with friends on other systems.

We checked this against Bethesda Support's platform articles, Bethesda's release notes for The Slasher, and Video Games Chronicle's February 2026 report on the developers' comments, in November 2026.

What Plays Together Right Now

Bethesda Support answers the PC question directly: as long as you are playing Fallout 76 on PC, you can play with other PC players in all game modes, whether they launch through Steam or through Microsoft on PC. That means a Steam player and a Game Pass player on Windows can share a team, a Private World or a Daily Op.

Consoles are separate. PlayStation players play with PlayStation players and Xbox players with Xbox players, and neither console connects to PC. Bethesda Support also states that the PC and Xbox console versions do not share progress, even though both carry the Xbox name, so an Xbox app character on Windows is not the same character as one on an Xbox Series X.

  • Steam and Microsoft Store or Xbox app on PC: play together in all modes.
  • PlayStation: PlayStation only.
  • Xbox console: Xbox only, and separate from the Xbox app on PC.
  • Game Pass on PC: Bethesda Support says Game Pass players can only launch the game through the Xbox app, not Steam.

What Bethesda Has Said About Crossplay

The most recent on-record comments came in February 2026. Video Games Chronicle, reporting on interviews Bethesda gave to Polygon, quoted creative director Jon Rush saying the team is "looking into it" and plans to scope the work involved, while adding that "it's just not in the immediate plans for us."

Production director Bill LaCoste explained why. He described huge technical hurdles in adding crossplay to a game that is nearly a decade old, and pointed to entitlements, account purchases and currency across platforms as specific problems. His commitment was limited to continued investigation rather than a timeline.

That framing is worth taking at face value. Bethesda has not announced crossplay, has not given a date, and has said the work is not imminent. Anyone claiming crossplay is coming in a specific update is guessing, so plan your group around the current rules.

The Native PS5 and Xbox Series Versions

The biggest platform change of 2026 was a performance upgrade rather than crossplay. The Slasher update on 15 September 2026 released native Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 versions, available by redownloading the game from each console's store.

Bethesda's release notes list the improvements:

  • A targeted 60 FPS on Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PS5 Pro.
  • 4K resolution on compatible displays on Xbox Series X, Xbox One X and PS5 Pro.
  • VRR, capped to 60 FPS, on Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS5 and PS5 Pro.
  • 1440p on PS5 and PS4 Pro, with older consoles staying at 1080p.

The notes say Bethesda intends the native versions to be available for all owners of Fallout 76 within the bounds of each platform, and point players to Xbox Smart Delivery and PlayStation's PS4-to-PS5 upgrade pages. Nowhere do they mention crossplay or any change to which platforms share servers. The same update also added native support for PlayStation DualSense and DualShock 4 controllers on PC, which helps a console player who moves to PC to join friends there.

Cross-Progression and Moving Characters

Characters do not travel between platform families. Bethesda Support states plainly that it does not have the capability to move characters or progress between platforms, so a PlayStation character stays on PlayStation and an Xbox console character stays on Xbox.

PC is again the exception. Your characters, progress and in-game items are available whether you play through the Xbox app for PC or Steam, as long as you use the same Bethesda.net account. Some things stay behind, though. Bethesda Support says Atoms, Season tickets and Fallout 1st membership balance cannot be transferred between the Xbox app and Steam, and that Atoms are only available on the platform where you first received them.

Fallout 1st follows the same rule. Bethesda's membership page says Atoms from a Fallout 1st membership go into a wallet on the platform where you bought it, so a membership bought on Steam delivers Atoms usable in the Steam version only.

Why Crossplay Is So Hard for This Game

The platform rules above explain much of the problem. Fallout 76 launched in November 2018, and every platform has kept its own separate economy since then. LaCoste noted that retrofitting crossplay into a game that is almost a decade old is far harder than it would have been during original development. Atoms sit in per-platform wallets, Fallout 1st memberships are bought per platform, and characters have never been able to move between console families.

LaCoste's comments line up with that. Entitlements, meaning what each player owns, account purchases and in-game currency all differ from one platform to the next, and merging players onto shared servers would mean deciding how those systems interact. Trading adds another layer, because caps and items move freely between players, so any shared server would also need rules for how those trades work across platforms.

None of this means crossplay can never happen. It does explain why Bethesda frames it as a long investigation rather than a feature with a release window, and why a performance update like the native PS5 and Xbox Series versions could ship without touching it.

Common Mix-Ups About Platforms

A few misunderstandings come up again and again, and Bethesda's own support pages settle each of them:

  • "The Xbox app on PC is the Xbox version." It is the PC version. Bethesda Support says the PC and Xbox console versions do not share progress.
  • "I can play my Game Pass copy through Steam." You cannot. Game Pass on PC launches only through the Xbox app, although that copy still plays with Steam players.
  • "The PS5 upgrade merged the servers." The Slasher's notes describe a performance upgrade and say nothing about crossplay.
  • "Bethesda can transfer my character." Bethesda Support says it cannot move characters or progress between platforms.

Some third-party sites still list older or incorrect crossplay information, so check the date on anything you read and lean on Bethesda's support pages when in doubt.

Playing With Friends on Different Platforms

With no crossplay, the practical answer is to agree on a platform. If your group already spans PC storefronts, you are fine: Steam and Microsoft players can team up freely. If someone is on a console, everyone who wants to play with them needs the game on that console family.

Once you share a platform, joining up is simple. Bethesda Support says you can play with friends around the world by opening the Social menu, selecting a friend's username and choosing Join Session while they are online. Fallout 1st members can also open a Private Adventure for themselves and up to seven friends, and those friends do not need a membership of their own to join it.

Group content rewards the effort. Daily Ops support teams of up to four with bonus experience for public teams, as our Daily Ops guide explains, and coordinated teams make builds that share perks far more effective, which our builds guide covers.

If you decide to move to a friend's platform, that means starting a new character, but it does not have to mean starting from scratch in skill or knowledge. Bethesda introduced a Level 50 Character Boost with Ghoul Within, aimed at getting a new character ready for Daily Ops and Public Events, and The Slasher updated that boost and its loadout to match the current perk system.

A level 50 character also qualifies for the ghoul transformation, so a fresh start is a natural moment to try a different playstyle; our guide to becoming a ghoul walks through it. Rebuilding your caps balance is the slowest part of any restart, and our caps farming guide shows the fastest legitimate routes after the 2026 reward changes.

Finally, remember what does not follow you. Characters, Atoms and Fallout 1st balances stay on the platform family where you earned or bought them, so check what you own before you buy the game again on another system.

Starting Over on a New Platform

A fresh character on a friend's platform starts with an empty wallet. The store's Fallout 76 Caps Services page lists caps delivered by an in-game trade on PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Steam: you enter your username at checkout so the worker can find you in game. The Fallout 76 hub collects the rest of the store's Fallout 76 services if you want to compare options for your new platform.
