Fallout 76 Daily Ops Guide: Rewards, Modes and Tips

Daily Ops is Fallout 76's repeatable instanced mode: you and up to three teammates clear a randomized dungeon for Vernon Dodge, and the faster you finish, the better your rewards, with Initiate, Paladin and Elder tiers at 16, 12 and 8 minutes. The op changes every day, rotating at 1:00 p.m. Eastern according to the Fallout Wiki, with a new mix of location, enemy faction and enemy mutation. As of November 2026, The Slasher has also added a batch of unique weapons to the rare reward pool. Here is how the Daily Ops mode works, what it pays, and how to reach Elder.

We checked this against the Fallout Wiki's Daily Ops page, Bethesda Support's Legendary Modules article, and Bethesda's release notes for The Slasher, Infestations and The Backwoods, in November 2026.

How Daily Ops Work

Daily Ops arrived with the One Wasteland For All update in September 2020, and Bethesda expanded it in later updates such as Locked & Loaded and Fallout Worlds. The wiki quotes Bethesda's original pitch: more repeatable, challenging content for experienced players. Vernon Dodge, a member of Appalachia's original Brotherhood of Steel, briefs you over the radio. He is introduced in the quest Breaking Radio Silence, but you do not need to finish that quest to join.

Each op takes place in an instanced dungeon that you can run solo or with a team of up to four. Two mission types appear in the rotation:

  • Uplink: activate a signal repeater and calibrate uplinks, then draw out the enemy leader by wiping out its forces.
  • Decryption: disable radio interceptors by taking down Code Carriers.

Everything else is randomized: the location, the enemy faction and the mutation that buffs those enemies. The wiki counts 980 possible combinations for regular Daily Ops after the second expansion, and 1,120 during Double Mutation Weekends, when enemies carry two mutations at once. Since The Backwoods, Daily Ops also sit in the map's Featured Activity list next to Public Events and Activities, so you can join from the map in a couple of clicks.

Locations, Enemies and Bosses

The Fallout Wiki lists 13 locations that Daily Ops can use, from the Charleston Capitol Building and Morgantown High School to Vault 94, Vault 96 and the West Tek Research Center. Eight enemy factions can fill them: Aliens, Blood Eagles, Communists, Mothman cultists, Mole Miners, Robots, Scorched and Super Mutants.

Every faction brings a boss near the end of the op, carrying unique and dangerous weaponry. A few examples from the wiki show what to prepare for:

  • Assaultron Intimidator: a supercharged Assaultron head laser plus arm-mounted miniguns.
  • Mole Miner Juggernaut: a special missile launcher that fires mini-nukes.
  • Super Mutant Firestarter: an assault rifle that fires fireballs.
  • Cultist Prophet: a Mothman Gun that fires sonic blasts.

Recent patches tidied up a couple of factions. Infestations fixed Robots in Daily Ops not being immune to poison damage, so poison builds should expect less from robot ops now, and The Slasher fixed Cultist kills in Daily Ops not counting toward "Kill a Cultist" challenges, which makes cultist days useful for season progress again.

Reward Tiers and Reaching Elder

Your after-action report pays out by completion time. The wiki lists three tiers, each with its own reward pool:

  • Initiate: finish in 16 minutes or less.
  • Paladin: finish in 12 minutes or less.
  • Elder: finish in 8 minutes or less.

Reaching a higher tier also pays the lower tiers' pools if you have not already earned them that day, so an Elder clear on your first op of the day rewards all three. Base rewards include experience, caps and a random legendary item, and the rare Daily Ops item rewards can only be earned once each per day. Bethesda Support also lists Daily Ops as a source of Legendary Modules.

The rare pool got bigger with The Slasher in September 2026. Bethesda's notes added several unique weapons as rare Daily Ops rewards, including Acceptable Overkill, Commander's Charge, Crushing Blow, Kingfisher, Night Light, Salt of the Earth, The Action Hero, Resolute Veteran, The Quick Fix, The Old Guard, Mind Over Matter and The Farmhand, plus Fancy weapon paint recipes for the Pump Action Shotgun and Single Action Revolver. Since the same update lets unique weapons take a fourth legendary mod, these drops are now worth upgrading.

Your first Elder clear unlocks the Smooth Operator trophy and achievement. It makes a natural first goal, and a good test of whether your build is ready for the harder endgame.

Rules Inside an Op

Daily Ops play by different rules from the open world, and knowing them saves time and supplies. The wiki lists the key ones:

  • Your equipment loses condition 50% more slowly during an op.
  • Enemies cannot be crippled, staggered or pacified, and they never spawn as legendary enemies.
  • Kills inside an op grant 50% less experience than normal.
  • Enemies drop ammunition that matches your equipped ranged weapon, except for special types such as fusion cores, mini nukes and missiles.
  • You can join even while over-encumbered, and after finishing you return to the last place you fast traveled from.
  • Once the op is complete, you have five minutes to explore and loot before the instance closes.

The ammo rule is especially useful. Running an op with your main ranged weapon equipped refills the ammo it uses, so a Daily Op can partly pay for itself. If you use melee or a weapon without matching ammo, enemies drop a random ammo type instead. Using the Daily Ops public team also grants bonus experience that grows as the team bonds.

Mutations and How to Prepare

Mutations are what make each day different. They are powerful effects only enemies in Daily Ops can have, and the wiki describes some that let enemies always detect sneaking players and others that grant healing. A few that shape your plan:

  • Group Regeneration: enemies heal, so focus fire one target at a time.
  • Volatile: enemies explode on death for 15 fire damage plus 5% of your maximum health, so keep some distance.
  • Active Camouflage: enemies use a stealth field that switches on and off as they change attack states.
  • Resilient: enemies cling to life until a melee attack finishes them, so carry a melee weapon or bash-capable build.

Read the day's mutation before you queue, then adjust. Our guide to this season's builds covers which families handle crowds, healing enemies and bosses best, and a full-health team build is the most forgiving way to learn the Elder timer.

Team composition matters as much as gear. Perks like Tenderizer stack across teammates and E.M.T. revives downed teammates automatically every few minutes, so a coordinated group clears faster than four solo players in the same instance.

Perks That Do Nothing in an Op

The op rules quietly switch off a surprising number of perk cards, and swapping them out before you queue is one of the easiest ways to shave time off a run. Because enemies cannot be crippled, cards that add damage against crippled targets, such as Tormentor, Easy Target, Slugger and Shotgun Champ, have nothing to work with. Limb damage cards lose most of their purpose for the same reason.

Pacify cards are dead weight too. Animal Friend, Wasteland Whisperer and Robotics Expert all try to pacify enemies, which the op rules block. Cards that help you find loot in the open world, such as the scavenging Luck cards, also matter less inside an instance that drops contextual ammo for you.

Use the freed points for damage, survival or team support. A perk loadout saved specifically for Daily Ops, with the cripple and pacify cards replaced, lets you switch in seconds when you queue. Pay attention to the mission type as well: in Decryption, the Code Carriers are the objective, so prioritize them over the rest of the crowd, while Uplink rewards holding each uplink point until the enemy leader appears.

Fitting Daily Ops Into Your Week

Because the rare rewards reset daily, one op per day is the sweet spot for most players: run it once for the full reward pools, then move on. Pair it with the Public Events that pop up on the map, which pay three to five Legendary Modules each since The Backwoods; our Legendary Modules guide shows how the two sources add up for legendary crafting.

The caps from ops and events feed straight into your bullion and plan budget, which our caps guide breaks down. If your regular group is split across systems, read our crossplay explainer first, because a team can only form on a shared platform, with Steam and Microsoft PC players counting as one.

For a bigger weekly challenge, the Gleaming Depths raid has its own weekly goal. Burning Springs added a weekly challenge for working through all stages of the raid, rewarding a four-star legendary cache with armor, power armor, a melee weapon and a ranged weapon.

Funding Your Daily Ops Kit

Elder clears burn stimpaks, ammo and repair materials, and keeping a kit topped up costs caps. If you would rather not grind the vendor pool to restock, the store's Fallout 76 Caps Services page lists caps delivered by an in-game trade on PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Steam, with your username entered at checkout so the worker can trade you. The Fallout 76 hub lists the store's other services for the game.
