Every Discord server has three boost levels: Level 1 takes 2 Boosts, Level 2 takes 7 and Level 3 takes 14, and each step adds emoji and sticker slots, better voice and stream quality, bigger uploads and visual perks for the whole community. There is no Level 4. Boosts beyond what a level needs now go to separate add-ons such as Server Tags and Enhanced Role Styles, which cost 3 Boosts each. Below is the full perk list as of November 2026, how level Boosts and add-on Boosts share one pool, and what happens when a server loses Boosts.
We checked every number against Discord's Server Boosting FAQ, its Account Caps article, the Server Tags and Enhanced Role Styles help pages, and the US App Store listing for Boost pricing, in November 2026.
Boosts Needed for Each Level
A server's level depends on how many active Boosts are counted toward it. Discord's Server Boosting FAQ lists the thresholds as 2 Boosts for Level 1, 7 for Level 2 and 14 for Level 3. Perks stack, so a Level 3 server keeps everything from Levels 1 and 2, and the slot counts in the table are totals, not additions.

| Perk | No level | Level 1 (2 Boosts) | Level 2 (7 Boosts) | Level 3 (14 Boosts) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Emoji slots | 50 | 100 | 150 | 250 |
| Custom sticker slots | 5 | 15 | 30 | 60 |
| Soundboard slots | 8 | 24 | 36 | 48 |
| Audio quality | 96 Kbps | 128 Kbps | 256 Kbps | 384 Kbps |
| Upload limit for all members (in the server) | 10 MB | 10 MB | 50 MB | 100 MB |
| Go Live streams | Standard | 720p 60 FPS | 1080p 60 FPS | 1080p 60 FPS |
| Visual extras | None | Animated icon, invite background | Role icons, static banner | Animated banner, custom invite link |
The thresholds get steeper as you climb. Reaching Level 1 is a pair of Boosts, and since every full Nitro subscription includes 2 Boosts, a single subscriber can unlock it alone. Level 2 needs five more on top of that, and Level 3 needs seven more again, so the top level realistically takes several Nitro members or a batch of purchased Boosts.
What Each Level Actually Changes
Level 1 is mostly about expression. The emoji cap doubles to 100, custom stickers go to 15 and the soundboard to 24 slots, voice channels move to 128 Kbps audio, and Go Live streams run at 720p and 60 frames per second. Admins also get an animated server icon and a custom background for the invite screen, which makes the server look more finished when new members arrive through a link.
Level 2 is the practical level. Streams step up to 1080p at 60 frames per second, audio doubles to 256 Kbps, and the upload limit rises to 50 MB for every member, but only for files posted inside that server. Custom role icons arrive, along with a static server banner. Stage channels with video or Go Live can hold an audience of 150.
Level 3 is about prestige and scale. The emoji cap climbs to 250 and stickers to 60, audio tops out at 384 Kbps, uploads in the server rise to 100 MB, and the banner can be animated. The standout perk is the custom invite link, which the Account Caps article describes as a vanity URL of up to 25 characters, so the server can share a short, readable address instead of a random code. Video stage audiences reach 300.
The upload perks are easy to misread, so it helps to separate the server's limit from each member's own plan. Discord's Account Caps article lists 10 MB per file for free accounts and 50 MB with Nitro Basic, and the Nitro plan page lists up to 1 GB with full Nitro. The Level 2 and Level 3 limits of 50 MB and 100 MB apply to every member, but only when they post inside that server, which is what makes a boosted server useful for sharing clips with friends who do not pay for anything.
Is There a Level 4?
No. "Level 4" shows up in search suggestions, but Discord's Server Boosting FAQ lists only Levels 1 to 3, and its answer to whether the newer add-ons replace the level system is that they supplement it while level perks stay exactly the same. What changed is that extra Boosts now have somewhere useful to go.

Discord calls these additional perks, and each costs a fixed number of Boosts that sit outside your level count:
- Server Tags, 3 Boosts: a custom 4-character tag members can display next to their name across Discord. Optional badge packs cost 2 to 5 Boosts more. Our Server Tags guide covers setup.
- Enhanced Role Styles, 3 Boosts: gradient and holographic role colors instead of flat ones.
- Game Server Hosting, 3 or more Boosts: a custom game server for the community.
- Experiments for select servers: Larger File Uploads, which raises the limit to 250 MB for 5 Boosts, and Server Themes, a custom server color theme for 3 Boosts.
There is one more quiet reward for going past 14. Discord's Account Caps article lists Level 3 video stage seats as 300 plus 30 for each additional Boost beyond 14, so large servers that host video stage events still gain capacity from extra Boosts even without a fourth level.
How Level Boosts and Add-on Boosts Share One Pool
Every Boost on a server comes from the same pool, and admins decide how it is split. The Server Boosting FAQ explains the allocation in plain terms: Boosts counted toward the level sit at 2, 7 or 14, and each additional perk takes its own block of 3. A Boost can only do one job at a time.
Discord gives a worked example for a server with 10 Boosts. It could use 7 for Level 2 and 3 for one additional perk, use 2 for Level 1 and 6 for two perks, or hold at Level 2 while saving toward Level 3. The catch is that new Boosts apply themselves to the level automatically whenever there are enough for the next one, so a server that receives three Boosts hoping to unlock Server Tags may instead find they bumped the level. Admins can undo that from the Server Boosts tab at the top of the channel list, which only owners and admins can see, and additional perks can only be bought and configured on the desktop app.
A server that wants Level 3 plus both Server Tags and Enhanced Role Styles therefore needs 20 Boosts: 14 for the level and 3 for each perk.
What Happens When a Server Loses Boosts
Boosts disappear for ordinary reasons: a member cancels, a Nitro subscription with its 2 included Boosts ends, someone moves their Boost to another server after the 7-day cooldown, or a booster is removed from the server. How the server reacts depends on what those Boosts were funding.
- Levels get a grace period. If the count drops below a level's threshold, the server keeps its level perks for 72 hours. After that the perks, such as the banner and extra emoji, are not deleted but become temporarily invalid until the level is regained.
- The custom invite link is the exception that hurts. Discord says it is lost and becomes available to other servers after 30 days, so a Level 3 server that slips needs to recover quickly to keep its address.
- Additional perks switch off immediately. There is no grace period: Server Tags vanish from members' profiles and Enhanced Role Styles revert to solid colors the moment their Boosts are removed or reallocated.
When Boosts are short, admins can use the Server Boosts tab to choose which perks to keep. Members who want to help can follow our walkthrough on how to boost a server, and anyone thinking of ending a subscription should read our guide to cancelling Nitro first, since its 2 Boosts leave with it.
What Boosters Get in Return
Levels benefit the whole server, but the people paying for them get a few things of their own, which is worth mentioning when you ask members to help reach a goal:
- The Server Booster role. Discord applies it automatically to anyone boosting the server, and it cannot be deleted or assigned by hand. The FAQ describes an experiment, live for select servers, in which the role gets a pink gradient style by default even without the Enhanced Role Styles perk, so boosters stand out in the member list.
- A profile badge. Boosting adds a Server Boosting badge to the member's profile that evolves the longer their streak lasts. The streak follows their oldest active Boost, and if they stop, they have 72 hours to apply a Boost to another server before it resets.
- Public thanks. If the owner enables it under Server Settings, then Overview and the System Messages Channel option, Discord posts a message in the chosen channel whenever someone boosts.
Recognition is part of why boost drives work, so make sure the system message is switched on and pointed at a channel people actually read before you announce a goal.
Planning a Realistic Boost Goal
Start from the perk you actually need rather than the highest level. A gaming group that mostly wants clearer streams and bigger clips gets most of the value at Level 2, while the custom invite link is the main reason to push for Level 3. If identity matters more than slots, 3 Boosts on Server Tags may do more for the community than a level bump.
Cost matters for members deciding whether to chip in. In the US App Store listing, one Server Boost is $4.99 a month, and Discord says Nitro subscribers get 30% off additional Boosts, while Nitro Basic subscribers get neither the discount nor included Boosts. The Buy-a-Level button in the Server Boost menu works out how many Boosts are missing for the next level and uses any unused ones you already own first. Our Nitro price guide compares what Boosts cost with and without a subscription.
Reaching the Next Level Faster
If your community is a few Boosts short of a level or an add-on, remember that every full Nitro subscription includes two Server Boosts. The store's Discord page lists full-access accounts that come with Nitro already active, and many of those listings note the two Boosts that come with it, so one account can close a small gap.
You apply those Boosts with the same steps as any other member's, and the same page also carries aged accounts and short usernames if you want more than the Boosts.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many boosts do you need for level 3 on Discord?
Level 3 needs 14 Boosts. Level 1 needs 2 and Level 2 needs 7, and each level includes the perks of the levels below it.
Is there a level 4 server boost on Discord?
No. Discord lists three levels. Extra Boosts can fund additional perks such as Server Tags and Enhanced Role Styles at 3 Boosts each, and video stage seats grow by 30 for each Boost past 14.
What does level 2 boosting unlock?
Level 2 adds 150 emoji slots, 30 sticker slots, 36 soundboard slots, 256 Kbps audio, 1080p 60 FPS Go Live streams, 50 MB uploads for all members in the server, role icons and a static banner.
