Discord Nitro Gift: How to Send, Claim and Spot Fakes

Discord YouTube thumbnail: How to Redeem Discord Gift Cards

A Nitro gift on Discord is a monthly or yearly Nitro or Nitro Basic subscription that you buy for someone else; it arrives as a gift in a DM or as a link, and the recipient claims it by accepting it while logged in to the right account. Nitro gifts are bought from the gift icon beside the message box, while Nitro Basic gifts come from the Nitro page in User Settings. As of November 2026 there is also a second route: Discord gift cards that load a spendable balance, which replaced the Nitro gift cards Discord stopped selling on Amazon on October 30, 2026.

We checked this against Discord's Help Center articles on Nitro gifting, claiming gifts, gift cards and where to buy them, the refund policy, Share Nitro, the Shop FAQ, safer shopping and the Halloween 2026 gifting promotion, in November 2026.

How to Send a Nitro Gift

You can buy a gift inside a DM, a group chat, a server channel or from the Nitro page. Where you buy it changes what you can do with it, so it is worth choosing the spot on purpose.

  1. Open the conversation you want to send the gift in.
  2. Select the gift icon to the right of the text box.
  3. In the Gift Nitro window, pick the gift and press Next.
  4. Add a payment method if your account has none saved, review the gift and select Buy Gift.

Buying inside a DM on desktop or browser lets you dress the gift up with a card design, a personal note, a soundboard effect and emoji confetti; those touches are not available in group chats or server channels. On mobile, the gift icon sits to the left of the text bar, and you can pick a gift card style in DMs, group chats and channels. Some gifts are offered at localized prices, so you may pay in your own currency at an amount equivalent to the USD price.

Nitro Basic is the exception to all of this. Discord says Basic gifts cannot be bought in DMs, group chats or channels; on desktop you buy them from the Nitro page (or User Settings, then Nitro), and on mobile from User Settings, then Nitro Gifting. Discord is also testing bulk gifting on desktop for some users, which lets you send gifts to several friends at once.

Where You Post the Gift Decides Who Gets It

This is the mistake that costs people the most. If you share a gift in a group chat or server channel, Discord says anyone there can claim it. To make sure the right person receives it, send the link in a DM to that person only.

On the receiving side, Discord's claiming FAQ covers two cases:

  • Inside Discord: press the Open gift button on the gift, then Accept gift in the confirmation window. The subscription is applied straight away.
  • From an email or another app: open the link in a browser, log in or register when prompted, check you are on the correct account, then press I accept. Discord redirects you to the Subscriptions tab in User Settings.

Before accepting, check which account is logged in, especially if you use more than one. Discord says that if a gift is claimed on the wrong account, it cannot provide another code or move the gift. Once a gift has been claimed, the link shows "This gift has already been claimed" in a browser, and in the app the button turns gray and reads Claimed.

Already Subscribed? How Account Credit Works

A gift is not wasted if the recipient already pays for Nitro. When someone accepts a gift while a subscription is running, or accepts a gift that differs from their current plan, Discord adds it to the account as Account Credit instead.

  • View it on desktop or browser under User Settings, then the Subscriptions tab.
  • Credit applies only to desktop and browser subscriptions, not to subscriptions billed through Google Play or the iOS App Store.
  • It is used only for an exactly matching plan: Nitro to Nitro, Basic to Basic, monthly to monthly, yearly to yearly.
  • To use it after the current subscription ends, press Subscribe for the matching plan; Discord may ask for payment details, but says you will not be charged unless the subscription renews.

In practice, someone on a mobile-billed plan who receives a gift should expect to switch to desktop billing to use the credit. If you are not sure what Nitro or Basic include before choosing a gift, our guide to every way of getting Nitro compares them.

Gift Inventory, Lost Links and Refunds

If you bought a gift and lost the link, nothing is gone as long as nobody has claimed it. Go to User Settings, then Gift Inventory, to see every unclaimed gift, copy its link again, or revoke the link and generate a new one. Claimed gifts disappear from that list. Shop gifts such as avatar decorations also wait in Gift Inventory until they are sent and claimed.

Refunds follow Discord's standard policy with a few gift-specific rules:

  • A gift claimed by another user cannot be refunded.
  • An unclaimed gift bought on desktop, web or Android can be refunded if you ask within 5 days of purchase.
  • A gift you claimed on your own account can be refunded, but it counts as your one-time Nitro refund.
  • Gifts bought on iOS go through Apple for refunds.
  • Any promotional reward tied to the gift purchase may be revoked if you get a refund.

Discord Gift Cards: A Balance, Not a Code for Nitro

Discord now sells its own gift cards, and they work differently from the old Amazon Nitro codes. A card loads a balance onto the account that redeems it, which can then pay for Nitro or Nitro Basic, Nitro gifts for friends, Shop items, Server Boosts and Game Shop purchases. In the US, Discord lists Best Buy, GameStop, Target and Walmart, both in stores and online; it also lists retailers in the UK, Canada, France and Italy.

Discord gift card amounts by currency (Discord Help Center, November 2026)
CurrencyFixed amountsVariable range
USD$25, $50$15 to $150
EUR€25, €50€15 to €150
GBP£20, £40£10 to £100
CAD$35, $75$20 to $175

To redeem one, either go to discord.com/redeem and log in, or in the desktop app open User Settings, Billing, Payment Methods and press Redeem beside Gift Card Balance. Points to know before buying one as a present:

  • Cards only redeem in the country where they were bought, and the account's Country/Region setting must match; euro cards work in any euro country.
  • Redeeming and spending are not available in the mobile app yet, though a phone browser works.
  • Balances cannot be transferred between accounts, and the balance must cover the whole purchase.
  • US cards and balances do not expire, and accounts with MFA can hold a higher balance, which our Discord 2FA setup guide covers.

One inconsistency is worth flagging: Discord's Nitro Gifting article, updated November 2, 2026, still describes buying Nitro gift cards on Amazon, while the newer gift card FAQ says those were no longer for sale as of October 30, 2026. Go by the gift card FAQ.

Share Nitro Trials and Gifting Rewards

Nitro subscribers may see a Share Nitro option, which is easy to confuse with a gift. It sends a friend a free two-week Nitro trial, up to three at a time, and the trial appears as an embedded message in your DM. Discord stresses that a real trial "is NOT a link, file, image attachment, program, nor a QR code", and that the recipient has 10 days to redeem it. Unlike a gift, a trial asks the recipient to choose a plan and enter billing details, and it becomes a paid subscription unless they cancel during the two weeks.

Gifting also earns recognition. Discord's Gifting badge grows as you send more Nitro or Shop gifts, joining badges like the one described in our Early Supporter badge history. Promotions come and go: Discord's Halloween offer, which gave a free familiar avatar decoration (Hex, Crowseph or Umbra) for each qualifying Nitro gift, ran from October 1 to November 2, 2026 and has now ended. For current plan prices before you buy, see our Discord Nitro price breakdown.

How to Spot a Fake Nitro Gift

"Free Nitro" is the most common bait on Discord, and Discord's own pages give clear tells. Its safer shopping article lists messages claiming you won free Nitro but need to click a link, threats to your account status, and requests for your password as classic phishing signs. A real gift sent in Discord shows an Open gift button inside the app. Discord also says it has never created a bot that offers free products, and that a QR code sent by a stranger can log them into your account.

  • Never log in on a page you reached from a "gift" link in a DM; open Discord yourself instead.
  • Never scan a QR code to "claim" Nitro.
  • Never buy a gift card because someone told you to pay them with it. Discord's FAQ warns that gift cards are frequently targeted by scammers.
  • Remember that Discord says it cannot refund purchases from unauthorized third-party sellers.

If you already clicked something and your account is acting strangely, follow our Discord hacked account recovery guide without delay.

Looking Beyond a Single Gift

A gift covers a month or a year of one subscription. Some readers want an account that already has the extras built up over years, and the store's Discord hub has account listings from marketplace sellers that mention Nitro, badges, short usernames or accounts dating back to 2015 to 2018. Discord's Terms of Service are explicit that users may not license, sell, lend or transfer an account without the company's prior written approval, so read them first, and check an account's real age yourself with our Discord account creation date guide rather than relying on a description.
