The Early Supporter badge went to everyone who purchased Discord Nitro at any point before Wednesday, October 10, 2018, and it can no longer be earned. Discord now files it under legacy badges: accounts that received it keep it, but no current purchase, Quest or event unlocks it. That cutoff is what makes it one of the most recognizable marks of an early paying Discord user.
We checked this against Discord's Help Center articles on profile badges, badge management and Nitro plans, Discord's Safety Center page on scams, October 2018 coverage from The Outer Haven and The Next Web, and Wikipedia's history of Discord, in November 2026.
Who Received the Early Supporter Badge
Discord's badge article explains the origin in a few lines. Before there were two styles of Nitro, there was a single paid plan, later known as Nitro Classic. When Discord expanded its Nitro offerings, it granted the Early Supporter badge to everyone who had supported it in those early years, as a thank-you. The qualifying rule is simple: anyone who purchased Nitro at any point before Wednesday, October 10, 2018 received it.

The wording matters. Discord does not say "active subscribers on that date" or "people who paid for a full year". It says anyone who purchased Nitro at any point before the cutoff. A single month bought in early 2017 and then cancelled fits that description just as well as two unbroken years of payments. What did not count was anything after the date, which is why the badge is tied so closely to a specific window in Discord's history.
Because the qualifying purchase had to happen before October 2018, every account carrying the badge was also created before then. That gives you a quick consistency check: if you decode the account's user ID with the method in our guide to finding a Discord account's creation date, it should land well before October 10, 2018. An account that decodes to 2019 or later cannot hold a genuine Early Supporter badge.
Why October 10, 2018 Is the Cutoff
The badge marks the end of Discord's first subscription era. The timeline below is drawn from Discord's own help articles and from press coverage written at the time.
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| January 2017 | Discord releases its first paid subscription, originally named Discord Nitro |
| Before October 10, 2018 | Any Nitro purchase in this window later qualifies for the Early Supporter badge |
| October 2018 | The original plan is renamed Nitro Classic and stays at $4.99 a month; a new Nitro at $9.99 a month adds a library of PC games |
| October 2019 | Discord ends the free game service that came with Nitro |
| October 2022 | Nitro Classic is replaced by a $2.99 Nitro Basic tier |
Coverage from October 16, 2018 described the change plainly: the previous $5 plan "lives on as Nitro Classic", while the upgraded Nitro rose to $9.99 a month and bundled games. Rather than leave early buyers with nothing to show for backing the original plan, Discord marked them permanently with the badge.
Nitro Classic itself is now nearly gone too. Discord's Nitro FAQ says anyone with an active Classic subscription can keep it, but if they cancel they cannot subscribe to Classic again, and new customers can only choose Nitro or Nitro Basic. None of those plans adds the Early Supporter badge today. For what the current plans cost, our Discord Nitro price breakdown has the numbers.
Can You Still Get the Early Supporter Badge?
No. Discord's badge article sorts every badge into current badges, which can still be unlocked, and legacy badges, which "can no longer be unlocked, but if you already earned one, it stays with your account". Early Supporter is the first entry on the legacy list.

It sits there alongside several other retired badges, each tied to a program or event that has ended:
- HypeSquad House badges, once earned through an in-app quiz that Discord says is no longer available.
- The HypeSquad Events badge, for people who ran events in HypeSquad's name.
- The Moderator Program Alumni badge, for members of Discord's moderator ecosystem before December 1, 2022.
- The Partnered Server Owner badge, from the old Partner Program.
- The Legacy Username badge, which shows an old name#0000 tag.
- The Last Meadow Online badge, which could be earned only between April 1 and April 7, 2026.
Two other rules close the door completely. Discord's badge management FAQ says profile badges are non-transferable and stay with the account that earned them, so a badge cannot be moved from an old account to a new one. And buying Nitro now gives you the regular Nitro badge, not an early one. Anyone who promises to "add" Early Supporter to your account for a fee is describing something Discord's own documentation rules out.
How to Check Whether an Account Really Has It
Discord's Badge Directory is the cleanest way to look. Discord's management article lists three ways in:
- Open your own profile or someone else's and select any badge next to the username.
- On desktop, select the You Bar at the bottom of the left sidebar, then Badges.
- On mobile, tap the You Bar, then tap the row of badges under your username. Discord notes the mobile directory is still an experiment for a small number of users.
The directory shows which badges an account has unlocked, what each one means and its rarity tier, which Discord grades as Common, Rare, Epic or Mythic based on how many users hold it.
Keep in mind that a missing badge on a profile does not prove the account lacks it. Profiles show up to six badges in display slots; everyone can hide badges, and Nitro subscribers can also reorder them. Profile Privacy set to Friends Only hides badges from anyone who is not a friend. Equally, a screenshot proves nothing, since images are easy to alter. If the badge matters to you, view it in the live client and decode the account's ID to confirm the age fits.
Early Supporter Compared With Today's Nitro Badges
Modern Nitro has its own recognition system, and it works very differently. Anyone subscribed to Nitro, Nitro Classic or Nitro Basic shows the Nitro badge, and on full Nitro that badge evolves as the subscription reaches milestones. The differences are worth spelling out:
- The Early Supporter badge is permanent. The evolving Nitro badge resets to the start if a subscription ends and you later resubscribe.
- Discord says its Support team cannot update, change or restore evolving Nitro badge progress under any circumstances.
- The Nitro badge cannot be hidden while you are subscribed, whereas Discord lets you hide other eligible badges you have earned.
- The evolving version is not available on Nitro Basic or Nitro Classic.
There is also a Gifting badge that grows as you send Nitro or Shop gifts, covered in our Discord Nitro gift guide. Those badges reward ongoing activity. Early Supporter rewards timing, which no amount of activity today can recreate.
Myths Worth Clearing Up
Because the badge is old and rare, a lot of half-remembered advice floats around about it. Here is what Discord's current documentation actually supports.
- "Boosting a server long enough earns it." It does not. Server Boosting has its own pink badge that evolves with an unbroken boosting streak, and Discord says the streak and badge drop back to the first level if you stop boosting.
- "Hiding the badge deletes it." Hiding only changes what visitors see. Discord's FAQ says badges cannot be removed from an account at all; hidden ones move to the end of your row with a small hidden icon so you can unhide them later.
- "The Account Age badge replaced it." They measure different things. Account Age unlocks once an account is a year old and keeps evolving, so any long-lived account can earn it. Early Supporter reflects a purchase made before a fixed date.
- "The HypeSquad quiz still hands out a badge." Discord says the quiz is no longer available, and the House badges now sit on the same legacy list as Early Supporter.
- "You can tell how long someone subscribed by hovering over Early Supporter." That detail belongs to the current Nitro badge: hover over it to see the subscription date and how long the person has been subscribed.
The short version: Early Supporter is a fixed historical marker, not a level, a streak or a reward you can work toward.
Why Badged Accounts Attract Scammers
Discord says it directly. Its Safety Center page on scams warns that some users target accounts with unique profile badges, naming the Early Supporter and Early Verified Bot Developer badges, and advises anyone holding one to be extra vigilant. A badge that cannot be re-earned turns an ordinary account into something worth stealing.
- Turn on multi-factor authentication, ideally a passkey or authenticator app rather than SMS, using our Discord 2FA walkthrough, and store your backup codes offline.
- Never share or screenshare your authorization token; Discord's page puts it bluntly: "Seriously. Don't do it."
- Ignore DMs from strangers offering to "verify" or "upgrade" your badges, and never scan a QR code someone sends you.
- If you lose control anyway, act within the first 48 hours using the steps in our hacked Discord account recovery guide.
Collecting a Legacy Badge Today
Since Discord will not grant the badge again, accounts that already carry it are the only place it exists. The store's Discord account listings come from marketplace sellers and include aged accounts from 2015 to 2018, some described with badges, Nitro history, short usernames and verified email or phone. Treat each listing's description as the seller's claim, and check the badge in the Badge Directory and the ID date yourself.
It is also worth knowing where Discord stands: its Terms of Service say users agree not to license, sell, lend or transfer an account without Discord's prior written approval, and its badge FAQ confirms badges themselves never move between accounts.
