Deleting a Discord account takes about a minute to start and 15 days to finish: you go to User Settings, then My Account, press Delete Account and confirm with your password, and Discord holds the account in a "pending deletion" state for 15 days before removing it for good. During that window you can cancel simply by logging back in. After it, nothing can bring the account back, and Discord's support team says it cannot speed the process up or reverse it.
We confirmed the steps and timings below against Discord's Help Center articles on deleting, disabling and restoring accounts, inactive account deletion, data requests and data retention, as well as the Terms of Service, in November 2026.
Delete or Disable: Pick the Right One First
Discord gives you two ways to step away, and they are not interchangeable. Disabling puts the account on hold indefinitely. Deleting schedules it for permanent removal. Plenty of people delete when what they really wanted was a long break, so it is worth a moment to compare the two.

- Disable keeps your servers, friends and messages waiting. You stop getting @mention emails, friend requests pile up for later, and you can come back any time by logging in and pressing Restore Account. Paid subscriptions keep billing unless you cancel them.
- Delete logs you out at once, cancels Nitro and Server Boost subscriptions, removes your access to servers, DMs, group chats and purchases, and anonymizes the account across every server and message after 15 days. There is no undo after that.
One caveat applies to both. Discord says accounts unused for two years or more may be scheduled for deletion, and that includes disabled accounts. A disabled account you forget about can end up deleted anyway, so disabling is a pause, not permanent storage.
If you decide a pause is the better fit, the button sits right next to the delete option: User Settings, My Account, then Disable Account under the Account Removal heading. On the phone apps it lives in the Account section of Settings. Discord applies the same server rule here as well, so you still have to transfer ownership of every server you own before the disable goes through. If you are unsure which state your account is in right now, our guide to a disabled Discord account and what it means helps you tell the difference.
A Checklist Before You Press Delete
The deletion itself is quick. The preparation is where people lose things they later want back. Work through these in order.
- Request your data if you want a copy. Under User Settings, Data & Privacy, choose Request Data. Discord says the package can take up to 30 days and is sent to the email on the account at the time of the request. The request is cancelled if you disable or delete the account before the download link arrives, so wait for the link before deleting. On desktop you can pick which categories of data to include, while the mobile app only offers the full package.
- Handle every server you own. Discord blocks deletion until you either transfer ownership of each server you own or delete it. Transfers are done from the server's member list with Transfer Ownership, and Discord says support cannot transfer a server back afterward, so choose the new owner carefully.
- Check your login details. You will need your password, and if multi-factor authentication is on, a code or backup code as well. If you have lost your authenticator, sort that out first using our Discord 2FA and backup codes guide.
- Delete any messages you want gone. Discord's retention page says you can edit or delete messages you posted while you still have access to the space. Deleting the account anonymizes it, so if particular messages matter to you, removing them yourself first is the only way to be sure they are gone.
- Tell your friends where to find you. Once the account is anonymized, people will have no way to look you up through it.
How to Delete Your Account on Desktop and Mobile
On the desktop app or in a browser, open User Settings with the gear icon in the bottom left corner. Make sure the My Account tab is selected, scroll to the bottom and choose Delete Account. If you still own servers, Discord shows a message telling you to transfer or delete them, and you will need to come back afterward. Enter your password, plus your MFA code if you use one, and press Delete Account to confirm.

On the iOS or Android app, tap your avatar in the bottom right corner, then tap your avatar again or the gear icon to open Settings. Choose Account, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account. The same server ownership check applies. Enter your password and any MFA code, then tap Okay.
The moment you confirm, Discord logs you out. That is normal and does not mean the deletion is finished. It means the 15-day pending period has started.
If the Delete Account button does not work for you, or you cannot get into the account to press it at all, Discord says to contact its support team, which can help with deletion requests in those situations. The same applies if you think someone else has taken over the account and you want it gone; mention the suspected compromise clearly in the ticket.
The 15-Day Pending Window
For 15 days after you confirm, the account sits in a pending deletion state. You receive no notifications or friend requests during this time. If you change your mind, log in on any device with the same email and password. Discord shows a notice that the account is pending deletion, and pressing Restore Account cancels the whole thing and returns you to your account.
A few situations complicate the restore:
- Forgotten password. Reset it from the login screen with Forgot your password? and then log in to restore.
- Deletion requested through support. If support started the deletion for you, follow up with that same support ticket to cancel it.
- No pending notice after 15 days. If you log in after the window and see no pending deletion message, the account has already been deleted and cannot be restored.
- Lost email access. You need a working login to restore. If the email on the account is gone, read our Discord account recovery guide straight away, because the clock keeps running while you sort it out.
If you only want to tidy up your identity rather than vanish, deletion is probably more than you need. Changing the address on file is covered in our walkthrough on changing your Discord email, and picking a new handle is covered in our Discord username change guide.
What Discord Keeps After Deletion
Deletion is not instant erasure of every record. Discord's data retention article describes several things that can outlast the account, and they are worth knowing before you go.
- Email and phone number. Kept for 180 days after deletion for trust and safety purposes, or up to two years if the account was reported or flagged for violations.
- Backups. Database backups are stored for 30 to 45 days and then deleted.
- Purchase records. Transaction information is retained for set periods to meet tax and accounting rules.
- Support contacts. Information related to support tickets and data requests is kept for five years from the closure of the request.
- Public posts. Discord says public posts may be retained for 180 days to two years for uses described in its Privacy Policy, such as training models that detect rule-breaking content.
Your messages in servers and DMs are not shown under your old name after deletion; Discord says the account is anonymized across servers and messages. If there are specific messages you want removed rather than anonymized, delete them yourself before you start.
Accounts You Cannot Restore
The restore button only works for deletions you started. Discord is explicit that an account deleted because it was banned, disabled or otherwise actioned by Discord cannot be restored through the normal process. The only option in that case is an appeal to the Trust and Safety team, which our Discord ban appeal guide walks through.
Inactivity is the other quiet cause. Discord may schedule accounts unused for two years or more for deletion and may warn you through the email or phone number on file. Logging in on the app or website cancels it, and Discord sends a message confirming the cancellation. If two-factor authentication is on and you have lost both your device and backup codes, Discord says it cannot remove 2FA, which means an inactive account in that state is effectively lost.
Starting Over After Deleting
Some people who delete later want an account with history or a short, memorable username rather than a brand-new one. The store's Discord section lists accounts from outside sellers, with stock that changes daily. Before going that route, know that Discord's Terms of Service ask every user to agree not to sell, lend, license or transfer an account or Discord username without Discord's prior written approval.
If you deleted an account and simply want to return, the cleanest path is a fresh account in your own name, verified with an email address and phone number you control. Keep in mind that a phone number tied to another Discord account cannot be reused for verification until it is removed from that account.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Discord take to delete an account?
Fifteen days. The account stays in a pending deletion state for 15 days from the moment you confirm, and Discord says its support team cannot shorten that period.
Can I recover a deleted Discord account after 15 days?
No. Once the 15-day window ends, Discord says the account is deleted from its system and the deletion is irreversible.
Why can't I delete my Discord account?
The usual reason is that you still own one or more servers. Transfer ownership or delete each server, then return to Delete Account. If the button still fails, contact Discord support.
Does deleting my Discord account delete my messages?
Discord says the account is anonymized across all servers and messages. If you want particular messages removed entirely, delete them yourself while you still have access to the spaces where you posted them.
Will deleting my account cancel Nitro?
Yes. Discord lists cancellation of subscriptions such as Nitro and Server Boosts among the things that happen when you delete. Disabling, by contrast, does not cancel anything.
Does Discord delete inactive accounts?
It may. Accounts unused for two years or more can be scheduled for deletion, and Discord may warn you by email or text first. Logging in cancels the scheduled deletion.
