To play COD Mobile with a controller, pair a supported PlayStation, Xbox or Backbone One controller over Bluetooth, open the game's Controller settings, turn on the option that allows a controller, and set sensitivity separately for each game type. The controller only takes over once a match starts, and the game puts you in lobbies with other controller players. Below is the full setup as of November 2026, the settings worth tuning first, and the line Activision draws between a normal pad and a banned one.
We checked this against Activision's controller support announcement, its Call of Duty: Mobile Security and Enforcement Policy and Multiplayer support page, the official Season 10 announcement and Android Authority's controller guide in November 2026.
Controllers That Work With COD Mobile
When Activision switched controller support on in November 2019, it named only two families: official DualShock 4 controllers for PlayStation 4 and official Xbox One controllers. Every version of the official PS4 pad was supported except the first generation. Activision also warned that players using a non-supported controller may experience issues with functionality, which is still the most useful rule of thumb when you shop for one.

Support has widened since then. Android Authority's guide lists the PlayStation 5 DualSense, the Xbox Series X and Series S controllers and the Backbone One alongside the original PS4 and Xbox One pads. It also notes that some players report other Bluetooth controllers working, including Nintendo Switch controllers on iPhone, but those are not officially supported and certain functions may not work. On Apple devices, the same guide says the phone or tablet needs iOS 13 or later for controllers to connect.
If you are buying a controller just for this game, pick one of the officially supported models. A clip-on design such as the Backbone One keeps the phone and pad as one unit, while a console controller with a phone clip lets you reuse hardware you already own.
Connecting and Enabling Your Controller
Activision's own five-step setup still applies. The only part that changes from pad to pad is how you put it into pairing mode.
- Put the controller in pairing mode. On a PS4 pad, hold Share and the PS button together; on an Xbox One pad, hold the Xbox button and the sync button.
- Turn on Bluetooth on your phone or tablet, usually from the device's Settings app.
- In the Bluetooth device list, find the wireless controller and connect to it.
- Open Call of Duty: Mobile, go to the Controller settings and enable the option that allows a controller to be used.
- Set and adjust your controls for each game type.
Activision adds two practical warnings. Connect the controller before you enter a match and switch to controller use before you enter the game or lobby, and expect the Bluetooth link to drop if your phone sits idle, in which case you simply reconnect it. Some phones also accept a wired connection, which removes the idle disconnect problem entirely.
Settings Worth Tuning First
The biggest difference between a frustrating controller setup and a comfortable one is sensitivity, and the game lets you set it per mode. Android Authority notes that sensitivity for Multiplayer, Battle Royale and Zombies can each be customized individually. That is worth using: a Battle Royale match on a large map rewards slower, steadier aim at range, while Multiplayer on small maps rewards quick turns.

Sensitivity is personal: the right value depends on your device, your controller's sticks and how you hold it, so copying someone else's numbers rarely works. A method beats a magic number:
- Change one value at a time. Adjust only your standard look sensitivity until a full turn feels controlled, then move on to aiming down sights.
- Tune ADS separately from hip fire. Most of your kills happen while aiming, so your ADS value matters more than your turning speed.
- Test in a low-stakes mode. Activision's Multiplayer support page says Practice vs AI still awards XP at a 90% reduced rate, so it is a place to dial in settings without hurting your stats.
- Keep the old values written down. If a change makes things worse after a few matches, go back rather than stacking further changes.
Remember that the controller only works inside matches. Activision says lobbies, menus and loadout screens still use the phone's native touch controls, so expect to reach for the screen between games.
How Controller Matchmaking Works
Activision's policy is clear: players using a controller are matched with other players also using a controller. The rule applies to parties too. If one member of your party uses a controller, the whole party is matched with controller players, and players on touch controls are matched with other touch players.
Android Authority adds that this can slightly increase matchmaking time and generally results in more competitive opponents. It also says the developer allows controller use and will not ban you for using one. That is an important distinction from some other mobile shooters that restrict controllers outright.
If you were hoping a controller would give you an edge over touchscreen players, it will not, because you will rarely see them. The real benefit is comfort and consistency over long sessions, especially in ranked play. Our ranked tiers guide explains how points and resets work once you start climbing with a pad, and the COD Mobile on PC guide covers how emulator players are reported to be pooled separately as well.
What Is Allowed and What Gets Banned
A standard controller is fine. A modified one is not. Activision's Security and Enforcement Policy for Call of Duty: Mobile has a section on unsupported peripheral devices and applications, and it names modded controllers, IP flooders and lag switches as examples of hardware or apps used for cheating. A minor offense brings a temporary suspension, a stats reset and deleted leaderboard entries; extreme or repeat offenses bring a permanent suspension.
In practical terms, that means avoiding pads with turbo buttons, rapid-fire switches or macro chips, and avoiding apps that sit between the controller and the game to change what the inputs do. The same policy also covers unauthorized third-party software used to gain an unfair advantage, so a remapping tool that adds automation falls into risky territory even if the controller itself is stock.
The policy notes that infractions are reviewed by Activision's and Tencent's security teams before enforcement and that penalties are not subject to further review. With that in mind, keeping your setup plain is the sensible choice. Losing access would hurt far more than any small input advantage, and if you ever do get locked out for other reasons, our account recovery guide explains the official route back in.
Guns and Modes That Suit a Pad
Controller aim changes which weapons feel best. Rifles with noticeable recoil, such as the AK-47 and ASM10, become easier to hold on target with thumbsticks than with a thumb on glass, while ultra-low-recoil options like the M13 stay strong either way. Our current best guns breakdown lists the Season 9 leaders by class so you can pick a rifle and an SMG to learn on your new setup.
Plan your layout around the abilities you trigger under pressure. Activision's Multiplayer support page explains that the Operator Skill slot unlocks at level 3 and lists skills such as the Purifier flamethrower, the War Machine grenade launcher and Tempest, which you charge by holding fire before it chains lightning to up to nine nearby enemies. A skill you hold to charge needs a comfortable button, not one that forces you to let go of a stick. Scorestreaks deserve the same thought, since you will call them in mid-fight.
Battle Royale has a few settings that reduce how often you reach for the screen. Activision's Battle Royale support page says Auto Loot is on by default, picking up items automatically while the matching slot is empty, and that it can be turned off on the BR Mode tab in the Basic section of Settings. Leaving it on means less menu work in the early game. The same page explains that you choose first-person or third-person perspective in the lobby before each match, so try both with your controller before settling on one.
Mode choice matters too. From November 11, Season 10 brings Verdansk to Battle Royale with updated movement and airborne controls, new third-person animations, doors you can shoulder bash open by running through them, and the ability to drag downed teammates while reviving them. Each of those needs a button, so revisit your layout once the update lands rather than assuming last season's mapping still fits.
If You Would Rather Not Start From Scratch
A controller makes aiming more comfortable, but it does not shorten the grind for weapons, attachments and operators. For players who would rather pick up a pad and jump into a profile with progress already in place, the COD Mobile accounts section of our store shows listings from marketplace sellers, each describing its own unlocks. One thing to know first: Activision's Terms of Use state that it does not recognize the transfer of accounts and that buying, selling or trading accounts is not permitted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does COD Mobile support PS5 controllers?
Yes. Android Authority lists the PS5 DualSense as supported alongside PS4 (except first generation), Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and Backbone One controllers.
Why is my controller not working in the menus?
That is expected. Activision says controllers only work during matches; lobbies, menus and loadout screens use touch controls.
Do controller players play against touch players?
No. Controller users are matched with other controller users, and a party with one controller user is placed in controller lobbies.
Can you get banned for using a controller?
Standard supported controllers are allowed. Activision's enforcement policy targets modded controllers and other unsupported devices or apps used for cheating.
Can I set different sensitivity for Battle Royale?
Yes. Sensitivity can be set separately for Multiplayer, Battle Royale and Zombies, so you can run slower aim on large maps.
Why does my controller keep disconnecting?
Activision notes the Bluetooth connection may drop if your phone sits idle. Reconnect it before your next match, or use a wired connection if your phone supports one.
