Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker has four 4v4 online battle modes (Combat, Flag, Base and Barrier), a six-player free-for-all called Survival Exercise, offline VR Missions, rotating event modes such as Ninja World League and Red & White Battles, plus Battle Road and an expanded Practice Mode as of November 2026. Each mode rewards different classes and loadouts, so knowing the objectives is the fastest way to win more.
We checked the rules against the Shinobi Striker community wiki's mode pages and in-game tips, Bandai Namco's game page, the May and August 2026 developer letters on the official Naruto site, and patch 2.71 coverage, all in November 2026.
Combat Battles: The Core Team Deathmatch
Combat Battles are the mode most players think of first. Two teams of four race to knock out 10 enemies within 7 minutes. According to the community wiki, it is the only mode that cannot go into overtime, so a match with equal knockouts, or none at all, ends in a draw.

What makes Combat Battles distinctive is the scroll system. Buffing scrolls spawn around the map and give your whole team a 30-second boost, with five types: Attack, Speed, Defense, Chakra (faster ninjutsu recovery) and Recovery (health regeneration). Combat Battles also have two special scrolls that each spawn only once per match. The Kirin scroll strikes every active enemy with a Kirin, and the Gamabunta scroll summons Gamabunta for 45 seconds. Grabbing those two scrolls can swing a close match, which is why the loading tip for this mode says simply: pick up any scrolls that appear.
Because knockouts are the score, staying alive matters as much as landing kills. The in-game tips advise keeping strength in numbers and knowing when to retreat. Attack and Ranged players do the scoring, while a Heal player keeps knockouts from piling up on your side.
Flag Battles: Capture and Escort
In Flag Battles each team defends its own flag while trying to capture the enemy's flag twice. You capture by standing on the enemy flag point until the timer runs out, and the community wiki explains that each enemy you defeat knocks a quarter off that timer, so beating all four defenders makes the capture instant.
Carrying the flag is a liability. The carrier's movement speed and jump height are halved, and it takes the equivalent of five light hits to make them drop it. If an ally walks over a dropped flag they pick it up, but if an enemy touches it the flag returns to its base. When the score is tied while someone is carrying a flag, the match goes into overtime, and during overtime every player gets a speed boost until their first knockout.
The game's own tips point to Defense types as the key to both attack and defense in this mode, and they make natural carriers because of their health pool and super-armored heavy attacks. A carrier using a jutsu that grants super armor will not drop the flag even when hit by ninjutsu, according to the wiki.
Base Battles: Holding Territory
Base Battles put three bases on the map: one near each team's spawn and one in the middle. You capture a base by standing inside it, and more allies inside means a faster capture. A single enemy inside the area pauses the capture without resetting it. Holding two bases is enough to earn points, and holding all three earns them faster. The team that fills its points first, or leads when time runs out, wins.

There are no buffing scrolls in Base Battles, but the wiki notes that both teams receive a Chakra boost during extra time, which a player who is knocked out when extra time starts does not get. Keeping your middle base matters most, because losing it hands the enemy the two-base threshold. The tips sum it up: guard your bases, but take as many as you can, and watch the whole map so a single flanker cannot steal one.
Barrier Battles and Survival Exercise
Barrier Battles are asymmetric. The attacking team has 5 minutes to defeat the boss Gamakichi, which first means lifting two sealing pillars to drop his chakra barrier and then damaging him before it returns. Doing that twice wins the match, and the first takedown moves Gamakichi and adds time. Defenders protect the pillars and the boss, and each attacker they defeat cuts time from the clock; patch 2.05 in June 2019 reduced that penalty from 10 seconds to 5. The wiki notes Barrier Battles are the only battle mode not used in events.
Survival Exercise is the free-for-all option. Six players compete in the Chunin Exam Finals Arena to reach 600 points, and the wiki's mode page lists a 7-minute limit after patch 2.15 lengthened it. Points come from four sources:
- Assist: 10 to 20 points for hitting an enemy shortly before someone else finishes them.
- Finish: 20 to 70 points for a knockout, scaled by your current placement.
- Special Technique Finish: 25 or more points for a knockout with a Secret Technique.
- Survivor: 10 or more points for every 60 seconds you stay alive.
The two modes reward opposite habits. In Barrier Battles the attackers must commit: the game's tips note that ninja cannot move while concentrating on a seal stake, so someone has to peel defenders away from the pillar while a teammate pulls it, and the window to damage Gamakichi is short once the barrier drops. Defenders, meanwhile, only need to stand near the stakes to slow the attackers down. In Survival Exercise, by contrast, the Survivor bonus and the placement-scaled Finish points mean patience pays. Picking off weakened players and avoiding three-way brawls usually scores more than chasing every fight, and saving a Secret Technique for a crowded moment can earn a large Special Technique Finish bonus.
Events, Battle Road and Practice Mode
Beyond Quick Match, the game rotates several event formats that use the core modes with different rules and rewards:
- Ninja World League: A ranked pairing of modes, typically Combat with Flag or Combat with Base. The tips suggest trying it once you are comfortable in Quick Match, whose scores do not affect your grade or rank.
- Ninja World Face-Off: A Survival-style free-for-all where you climb a leaderboard.
- Ninja World Hero Festival: Similar to the League, but you can only use your assigned VR Masters.
- Red & White Battles: Players are split into the Toad, Snake or Slug factions and earn points for their side over two weeks, with the winning faction getting an extra prize.
Battle Road arrived with patch 2.65 in 2025 and lets you earn points from matches and exercises to climb tiers that award scrolls and titles. It runs in seasons; the Season 10 Battle Road rewards included Esoteric Scrolls and Jiraiya-themed titles such as "Pervy Sage," and the August 2026 letter announced another new season with the "Celebratory Outfit: Entire Earth" costume among its rewards.
Practice Mode received its biggest upgrade in patch 2.71 on August 28, 2026. You can now remove Ninja Masters from the match, choose your teammates and pick the rules for Combat Battles, and the update allows parties of up to 4 friends. The same patch renamed six maps, including Hidden Leaf Village (Snow), Hidden Sand Training Field (Two Levels) and Hidden Rain Village (Tower).
Offline VR Missions
The VR Ninjutsu Arena is the closest thing Shinobi Striker has to a story mode. Missions are grouped into Training, D, C, B, A and S ranks, and they mix defense targets, seal stakes and base captures with boss fights against Gamabunta, Kurama, Gyuki, Shukaku and the Perfect Susano'o. Clearing them raises your Ninja Class: the Entrance Exam promotes you to Chunin and finishing the rest promotes you to Jonin, which unlocks more items in the Ninja Tools Shop.
VR Missions are also the best place to earn money and test new builds without public matchmaking; one of the loading tips says to use the Ninjutsu Arena when you want to earn some money. Several trophies come from specific missions, and completing every mission is one of the harder silvers. Our Shinobi Striker trophy guide lists which missions count.
Which Mode Should You Play?
Your goal decides the answer:
- Learning the game: Start with VR Missions and Practice Mode, then move to Combat Battles in Quick Match.
- Trophies: You need 100 wins each in Combat, Flag and Base Battles, and 1,000 total matches, so spread your time across all three team modes.
- Testing a new weapon: Survival Exercise and Combat Battles give the most fights per minute. Our best weapons breakdown covers what to try for each class.
- Faster queues: Follow the events. Our look at the Shinobi Striker player count shows how events and new characters bring players back, and our crossplay explainer covers why each platform has its own pool.
Getting Battle-Ready Faster
Every mode goes better with a full arsenal of jutsu, outfits and Secret Techniques, and building one through master training and scroll appraisals takes a long time. For PlayStation players, the Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker store section brings together modded save services for PS4 and PS5 that cover unlocking all content including DLC, all clothes, max scrolls and infinite ultimate jutsu, ninjutsu and sub-weapons.
