Look at the platinum pages on this store and you will see two kinds of platform tag. Bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring and Grand Theft Auto V say "PS4/PS5 · Trophy service". Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Ghost of Yotei say "PS5 · Trophy service". Those tags tell you where the service is offered. They do not tell you which trophy list on your profile will get the platinum, and for a lot of cross-gen games that is the question that matters.
This guide explains PS4 vs PS5 trophy lists in plain terms: when a game has one list and when it has two, why trophy sync never merges them, and exactly what to tell support so a cross-gen platinum service lands on the list you actually care about.
How PlayStation splits trophy lists between PS4 and PS5
There are three situations, and every game you own falls into one of them.
A PS4 game played on PS5. Backward compatibility runs the PS4 version, so trophies land on the game's PS4 list. Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice are PS4 releases, which is why they show one list no matter which console you use.
A game with native PS4 and PS5 versions. These almost always have two separate lists, because PS5 uses a newer trophy format that PS4 lists do not support. Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West work this way, and Grand Theft Auto V got its own PS5 list when the PS5 version launched in March 2022.
A PS5-only game. One PS5 list and nothing to match. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Ghost of Yotei are examples on this store.
Older generations add one more wrinkle. A PS3 version has its own list again, and some of those can no longer be finished; the PS3 version of GTA V, for instance, cannot be platinumed any more because its online mode was shut down.
Trophy sync is not a merge
A common misunderstanding is that syncing combines a game's PS4 and PS5 trophies. It does not. Trophies belong to your account, and syncing simply uploads what a console has recorded to PSN. A PS5 does this automatically; on a PS4 you can force it from the Trophies app by pressing Options and choosing to sync with PlayStation Network.
What looks like merging is usually a game feature called auto-pop. Some games let you carry a PS4 save into the PS5 version, and when the save loads, the PS5 list unlocks trophies you already earned. That is the developer's choice, it only works for games that support it, and it only covers trophies your save actually earned.

Matching store listings to trophy lists
Here is how that plays out for platinum pages on the store. The right-hand column is the one sentence worth adding to your order.
| Game | Store tag | Versions released | Trophy lists | Tell support |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bloodborne | PS4/PS5 | PS4 only | One PS4 list | Nothing extra needed |
| Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice | PS4/PS5 | PS4 only | One PS4 list | Nothing extra needed |
| Elden Ring | PS4/PS5 | PS4 and PS5 | Two lists | Which version's list you want |
| Horizon Forbidden West | PS4/PS5 | PS4 and PS5 | Two lists | Which version's list you want |
| Grand Theft Auto V | PS4/PS5 | PS3, PS4 and PS5 | Separate PS4 and PS5 lists | PS4 or PS5 list |
| Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 | PS5 | PS5 only | One PS5 list | Nothing extra needed |
| Ghost of Yotei | PS5 | PS5 only | One PS5 list | Nothing extra needed |
The product pages describe the service as full platinum completion with the trophy counts for the game's standard list. They do not say which list is used when a game has two. That is not a reason to avoid the order; it is a reason to say which one you want before work starts.
How the difference shows on your profile
On PS5, a game's PS4 list and PS5 list appear as two separate entries, each with its own completion percentage. PSNProfiles does the same: two lists, two rows, each tagged with its platform. A PS4 game you play through backward compatibility shows a single PS4 row however many hours you put in on the newer console.
That has two practical effects. First, you can hold two platinums for one game if you complete both lists, which some trophy hunters chase on purpose. Second, finishing one list does nothing for the other, so a half-finished PS4 list stays half-finished on your profile even if the PS5 one hits 100 percent.

What to tell support before work starts
A clear order message heads off almost every cross-gen mix-up. Include:
The game and the version you own. On PS5, PS4 titles carry a small PS4 label in your game library, which settles it quickly.
The list you want completed when the game has two. If you own both versions through an upgrade, you have both lists available and need to pick.
Your current progress on each list. If one list is already partly done, say so, so nobody assumes a fresh start.
Your timestamp choice, "Instant time-stamps" or "Legit time-stamps", exactly as you selected it on the page.
Whether you want the second list as well. The product pages do not mention double platinums, so ask support how that is handled rather than assuming one order covers both.
Because these orders are done by signing in to your PSN account, read our trophy service login guide before you share details.
Upgrades, save transfers and timing
Upgrading a PS4 game to its PS5 version gives you a second app with its own list, which starts at zero unless the game supports a save transfer that auto-pops. If you plan to move to the PS5 version later, decide which list you want the platinum on now; changing your mind after the order is complete means a second list to finish.
Moving to a new console does not move or reset anything. Your trophies stay on your account, and signing in on the new PS5 brings your whole history with it. If an old PS4 never synced, turn it on and sync before you retire it, or trophies stored only on that console stay there.

Order the list you actually want
When you are ready, open the platinum page for your game, such as Elden Ring for a two-list game or Bloodborne for a single PS4 list, check the platform tag, and name your list in the order message. Every platform's options live on the PlayStation trophy services hub.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do PS4 trophies transfer to PS5?
Your trophies stay on your account, so everything you earned on PS4 is visible on PS5. What does not happen is trophies moving from a game's PS4 list to its PS5 list. Only games that support save transfer with auto-pop can unlock PS5 trophies from PS4 progress.
Can one game give me two platinums?
Yes, when the game has separate PS4 and PS5 lists, such as Elden Ring or Horizon Forbidden West. Each list has its own platinum. A PS4-only game like Bloodborne has a single list and a single platinum, even on PS5.
Which list does a platinum service complete if I do not say?
The product pages do not specify, so do not leave it to chance. State the version and list in your order message, and ask support to confirm before work starts. It takes one line and prevents the most common cross-gen mistake.
Does playing a PS4 game on PS5 create a PS5 trophy list?
No. Backward compatibility runs the PS4 version, so trophies go to the PS4 list. A PS5 list only exists if the game has a native PS5 version.
What does PS4/PS5 mean on a product page?
It means the service is offered for the game on both consoles. For a PS4-only game it is the same single list either way. For a game with two lists it does not choose one for you, which is why you should name it.
How do I check whether a game has separate lists?
Look the game up on PSNProfiles or in your PS5 trophy menu. Separate lists show as separate entries with their own platform tags. If you are still unsure, ask support before you order.
