The Crimson Manor in Phantom Blade Zero is an optional sealed area beneath the Sha-Chi Tower in Weeping Creek Valley, and you open its door with the Puppet's Tongue, the reward for finishing The Herald's Illusion. You can reach the locked door as early as Chapter 3, but the key comes much later because the quest asks you to find three portals spread across the map, one of which sits behind the repaired Illusory Pipa. This walkthrough covers every step in order, what is waiting inside, and the one point of no return that can lock you out.
We checked this route against Game8's Crimson Manor, Deep in the Valley, Herald's Illusion and missables pages, and Maxroll's Crimson Manor guide in November 2026. Light spoilers follow for quest names and late-game areas, but no story endings are described.
What the Crimson Manor Is
Game8 lists the Crimson Manor as one of the game's Purple Quests, the mystery-style story quests that sit under the Story tab of the quest menu. The main campaign can be finished without ever going inside, which is why so many players walk past the door on their first visit. It still matters: Game8 notes that Purple Quests are mostly tied to unlocking certain endings, and Maxroll connects the manor to the Whence the Weeping and Secrets at the Heart of the Lake threads.

The whole process breaks into three phases:
- Reach the door through the Deep in the Valley quest in Chapter 3.
- Complete The Herald's Illusion by entering three portals in three regions.
- Repair the Illusory Pipa along the way, because the third portal sits in an area the pipa unlocks.
Expect this to stretch across most of the campaign. It is not something you finish in one sitting, so the smart approach is to know the steps now and tick them off as the story naturally takes you to each region.
Phase One: Reaching the Locked Door
The route starts with Deep in the Valley, which Game8 classifies as an optional main quest in Chapter 3. Speak to the Panicked Mandate Disciple near the Creek Valley Plains Entrance Bell to pick it up, then work through these steps:
- Defeat The Hunt a second time at the Great Waterfall in Weeping Creek Valley. He drops the Hunter's Chain Sickle, and Game8 notes this fight is also required before you can move on to the Crimson Forest.
- Follow the mountain path up to the Valley Sha-Chi Tower Summit, climb the structure near the Bell and head toward the pipes, where a key glows gold.
- Use the Hunter's Chain Sickle on the pipe to pull yourself up and grab the key.
- Return to the locked gate where you met the disciple (the nearby Bell makes this quick) and open it.
- Pass through the camp to the base of the tower. Maxroll describes a suspended Powderkeg here: lure it to the debris and detonate it, staying clear of the blast.
- Ride the elevator down. The door at the bottom will not open yet.
Before you leave, grab the Ancient Armor Fragment on the left side near the door. KeenGamer ranks it as one of the best defensive accessories, with up to 20% damage reduction that scales with your health. Then use the Bell to head out and carry on with the story.
Phase Two: The Three Portals of The Herald's Illusion
The Herald's Illusion starts the first time you step through one of three portals wrapped in red thread. Game8 lists the quest under Chapter 8 with the Village of Lu as its region, and its final rewards are the Puppet's Tongue and the Crystal Puppet Eye (Yin). Here is where each portal sits:

- Village of Lu: usually the first one you find. Maxroll places it near where you defeat Yuzan, No. 3 Musician Puppet. Inside, a puppet hangs from red threads with a single glowing blue eye.
- Mandate Encampment: behind a building in the area guarded by Yubi, No. 21 Swordfighter Puppet, who drops the Baishan Stormswords. Maxroll points out that this same area holds the Illusory Pipa Backplate and the Lament Draught medicine, so search it thoroughly.
- Mountain of Imprisonment: in the northern part of the region, guarded by Jade-Face and Huangxing, the Kunlun Renegade. Game8 lists Seamless Death as the reward for beating Jade-Face here.
Reaching the Mandate Encampment portal takes some setup. Maxroll's route has you beat Gu Wanyue, the Wailing Wraith, in Pangzhen, drop down the well and pick up the Mandate Encampment Outer Gate Key before the story leads you into the camp. The third portal is the real gate, because you cannot reach the Mountain of Imprisonment until the mist blocking it is gone.
Phase Three: Repairing the Illusory Pipa
The Mountain of Imprisonment is sealed by mist at the Weeping Mistgate, and only the repaired Illusory Pipa clears it. Game8 flags this explicitly: The Herald's Illusion also requires the Illusory Pipa quest. Maxroll lays out the parts:
- Broken Illusory Pipa: drops from Bai Chilian, Lady of the Twin Serpents, the final boss of the Crimson Forest.
- Illusory Pipa Head: complete Firefly's Memory Flower and defeat Dusk, the Puppeteer. Maxroll calls this a hard fight and suggests coming back after progressing through Pangzhen if you struggle.
- Illusory Pipa Strings: from Yan Qiansui, the Zither Maiden, at the Meigu Songhouse Docks on Meigu Lake, once her quest is far enough along for her to appear.
- Illusory Pipa Backplate: in the Mandate Encampment area mentioned above.
Bring the parts to Myst in Pangzhen to restore the pipa, then use it at the Weeping Mistgate. Once inside the Mountain of Imprisonment, finishing that region also completes Whence the Weeping, according to Maxroll, and the third portal finally hands you the Puppet's Tongue. Our Phantom Edge guide explains why the pipa is also worth equipping, not just collecting.
The Point of No Return to Watch
This is the part that ruins runs. Game8's missables guide warns that the Mountain of Imprisonment entrance can be lost if you push the main story into the Mirage Estate first, because entering the estate locks you out of the area. Without the Mountain of Imprisonment you cannot reach the third portal, and without the third portal there is no Puppet's Tongue.
So the order is fixed:
- Repair the Illusory Pipa and clear the Weeping Mistgate.
- Explore the Mountain of Imprisonment and enter its portal.
- Return to Weeping Creek Valley, use the Puppet's Tongue and clear the manor.
- Only then step into the Mirage Estate.
The Mountain of Imprisonment also holds several worthwhile Tales, including Hero's Lament for the Ink Cut Phantom Edge and Don't Forget Me, so it is worth the detour on its own. Our side quest guide lists which Tales in each region are on a timer like this one. If you do miss the window, the entire quest chain resets on a later cycle, which our New Game Plus guide covers.
Inside the Manor: Bosses and Rewards
Use the Puppet's Tongue on the door at the bottom of the elevator and the manor opens up. Game8 lists two boss encounters inside: the Puppet Scavenger and Acolyte Hansui. The rewards it records are:
- Alloyed Scythe Blade: the Soul Tempering material for the Hunter's Chain Sickle, which neatly closes the loop with the weapon you used to start this whole route.
- Hansui's Frost Mask: a mask item that both Game8 and Maxroll list among the manor's rewards.
- Crystal Puppet Eye (Yang): the partner to the Yin eye from The Herald's Illusion.
Maxroll adds that the manor holds several lore pages about the Herald, so read everything if you care about the story behind the puppets. It also notes that if you have already handled the other three allies tied to the lake mystery, the manor gives you what you need to enter the Four Guardians' Mirror and finish Secrets at the Heart of the Lake. For how those threads feed into the final outcome, the existing endings guide picks up where this one stops.
One small note on naming: Game8 spells the key both "Puppet Tongue" and "Puppet's Tongue," and some guides call the door puppet by different names, so do not worry if your in-game text looks slightly different from a guide you are following.
Preparing for the Fights Inside
The manor bosses come late in your run, so you will have most of your kit by then. Still, a little preparation goes a long way:
- Rest at the tower Bell first so your medicine charges and Remnant Sparks are full.
- Check your Edge pair. Puppets in this game resist some effects; KeenGamer notes the Livingwood Talisman exists specifically to make Bleed and lifesteal work against Puppets, Phantom Bodies and Golden Bodies.
- Bring a defensive medicine. Kuye Dew's damage reduction is a good fit for unfamiliar patterns.
- Save before going down. Game8 notes saving only happens at Bells, so use the one at the tower before taking the elevator.
If the route through the Crimson Forest gave you trouble earlier, our Crimson Forest walkthrough covers the Bai Chilian fight that drops the broken pipa.
Skipping the Setup on a New Run
The manor is a reward for patience, but if you have already seen it and want a fresh run with your options open, the store's mega modded save gives you all 33 main weapons, 73 fully upgraded accessories, 17 maxed medicines and 9,999 skill points in four Cycle 1 slots that each start at the beginning of the game. Two slots use the normal difficulty range and two use 66 Days, with either fully upgraded or level 1 weapons, so you still play the manor route yourself, just with a stronger kit.
It is for PlayStation 5 and PC only, you must own the game, and the platinum trophy is sold separately. You can browse everything else on the Phantom Blade Zero hub.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you open the Crimson Manor door?
Use the Puppet's Tongue, which you get by entering all three Herald's Illusion portals in the Village of Lu, the Mandate Encampment and the Mountain of Imprisonment.
Where is the Crimson Manor in Phantom Blade Zero?
Beneath the Sha-Chi Tower in Weeping Creek Valley. You reach it through the gate opened in Deep in the Valley, then by blowing up debris at the tower base and riding the elevator down.
Can you miss the Crimson Manor?
Effectively yes. Entering the Mirage Estate locks the Mountain of Imprisonment, which holds the third portal, so finish the portals before you go there.
What rewards are inside the Crimson Manor?
Game8 lists the Alloyed Scythe Blade, Hansui's Frost Mask and the Crystal Puppet Eye (Yang), plus fights with the Puppet Scavenger and Acolyte Hansui.
Do you need the Illusory Pipa for the Crimson Manor?
Yes. The third portal is in the Mountain of Imprisonment, which is behind the Weeping Mistgate that only the repaired Illusory Pipa can clear.
Is the Crimson Manor required for the main story?
No. It is an optional Purple Quest, but Purple Quests feed into which endings you can reach, so completionists should not skip it.
