MW4 DMZ Backpacks and Plate Carriers Guide

Modern Warfare 4 YouTube thumbnail: DMZ Storing and Securing LOOT (Backpacks, Loadouts, and Survival Kits)

In Modern Warfare 4 DMZ your backpack decides how much loot you can carry out of Hajin, and your plate carrier decides how long you live long enough to carry it. Both sit in the Equipment category, both can be looted, bought or printed, and both get better as you climb the DMZ Player Level track.

The short version: a bigger backpack means more slots, a better plate carrier means more armor plates, and the backpacks that matter most are the ones with Secure Slots, which keep an item even if you fail to exfil. This guide walks through every tier, what the pre-launch guides actually confirm, and how to get your hands on the good packs.

Why backpacks and plate carriers matter in DMZ

DMZ runs on one blunt rule: what you extract is yours, and what you fail to extract is gone. Your backpack is the bag that either makes it home or does not. The more slots it has, the more loot, keys, materials and valuables you can bring to a single exfil, which means fewer runs and less risk spread across more trips into Hajin.

Plate carriers are the other half of the equation. A higher-tier vest carries more armor plates, so you can absorb more damage before you are down and the whole bag is at risk. In a mode where dying costs you everything in the pack, the vest is not a luxury item, it is insurance on the loot you are already carrying.

Backpack tiers: Basic Pack, Small, Medium and up

If you deploy without a proper backpack equipped, you drop in with the Basic Pack. It has eight slots, items stack, and there is a separate pouch for Resources so the four base materials never eat into your loot space. The Basic Pack is fine for a scouting run, but it fills fast the moment you start pulling weapons, keys and 3D Printer Ingredients.

The first two upgrades you can print are the Small Backpack and the Medium Backpack. The Small Backpack adds item slots. The Medium Backpack adds slots and, crucially, adds Secure Slots. From there, higher-tier packs continue to add item slots, Secure Slots and in some cases extra weapon slots, which matters because by default you carry only two weapons and a melee into and out of a deployment.

Activision has not published the exact slot and Secure Slot count for every backpack ahead of launch, so treat any precise number you see early as unconfirmed. What is confirmed is the direction of travel: each tier adds capacity, and the jump from Basic to a pack with Secure Slots is the single most valuable upgrade for a new operator.

Secure Slots: the only slots that survive a failed exfil

Secure Slots are the headline feature of better backpacks. An item placed in a Secure Slot is kept even if you die and fail to exfil, while everything else in the pack is lost. They are scarce, so the choice of what goes in them is a real decision every run.

The rule of thumb is simple: a Secure Slot should hold the thing you would be most upset to lose. That is usually a Weapon Manual, a rare 3D Printer Ingredient, a Dog Tag Case, or a high-value valuable, never ammo or a common base material you can replace in two minutes. If you are carrying nothing irreplaceable, a Secure Slot sitting empty is not a mistake, it just means you had a quiet run.

Plate carriers and armor vests

Armor vests scale the same way backpacks do. A higher-tier vest holds more armor plates, which raises the amount of damage you can take before going down. Plates themselves are consumables you loot and slot in during a fight, so the vest sets your ceiling and the plates you carry set how often you can top back up.

Because vests are Equipment, a vest you bring in on your loadout rides with your operator and comes home on a successful exfil, while a spare vest sitting loose in your backpack follows the keep-or-lose rule. If you print or buy a strong vest, wear it rather than carrying it as cargo, and keep a stack of plates in your pack to feed it.

Where to find and how to print better gear

There are three ways to upgrade. You can loot a better pack or vest in Hajin, where police stations and combat areas are good for armor and gear. You can buy from the Vendor at the FOB once it unlocks at DMZ Player Level 5. Or you can print gear at the 3D Printer, which unlocks at DMZ Player Level 2 and is the most reliable route because you control exactly what you make.

Printing costs materials. Backpacks and vests are built from the four base Resources plus specific 3D Printer Ingredients you have to find and extract. That ties your gear progression directly to looting, which is why materials runs and gear runs tend to be the same runs. If you would rather skip the grind, the store can set up your MW4 DMZ equipment for you, but the printer route is open to everyone from Level 2.

A simple backpack and vest routine

These habits follow directly from the published rules rather than tested meta:

  • Print the first pack with Secure Slots as soon as the Medium Backpack recipe and materials allow. It is the biggest single quality-of-life jump.
  • Wear your best vest instead of carrying it, and keep a stack of plates in the pack to feed it.
  • Reserve Secure Slots for the one or two things you could not replace, and leave them empty on quiet runs rather than filling them with junk.
  • Empty your backpack into the Stash after every successful exfil so a bad next run cannot cost you last run's loot.
  • Match pack size to the plan: a big pack for a materials haul, a lean kit for a fast objective run.

Weapon slots and carrying looted guns

By default your loadout holds two weapons and a melee, in and out of a deployment. That cap is why the backpacks that add weapon slots are worth chasing once your Secure Slots are sorted. An extra weapon slot lets you bring a rival's gun home instead of leaving it, and in DMZ a looted weapon can carry up to eight attachment slots, while a build you make at the Gunsmith tops out at five slots plus an Apex attachment. A well-kitted enemy weapon is often stronger than what you can make early, so the capacity to carry it out is real, measurable value.

The catch is the keep-or-lose rule. A looted gun is a single copy that lives in your Stash, not a permanent Gunsmith unlock, so it is only yours once you exfil and gone the moment you lose it on a later run. That makes a weapon slot a gamble you choose run by run: bring the extra gun when you expect to find something worth hauling, and leave the slot empty on a quiet materials run so your pack has room for keys, Ingredients and valuables instead. A bigger pack is not just more loot, it is more flexibility in what kind of loot you prioritize.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many slots does the Basic Pack have in MW4 DMZ?

Eight item slots, with stackable items and a separate pouch for the four base Resources, so materials never compete with loot for space.

What are Secure Slots and which backpack has them?

A Secure Slot keeps its item even if you fail to exfil. The Medium Backpack is the first printable pack that adds them, and higher-tier packs add more.

Do better plate carriers hold more armor?

Yes. A higher-tier vest holds more armor plates, raising how much damage you can absorb before going down. Plates themselves are consumables you loot and slot in.

Where do I unlock the 3D Printer to make backpacks?

The 3D Printer unlocks at DMZ Player Level 2. From there you can print packs and vests using base Resources plus specific Ingredients you extract from Hajin.

Does a backpack in my loadout survive if I die?

The pack you deploy with is part of your loadout, but its contents follow the keep-or-lose rule. Only items in Secure Slots are protected on a failed exfil.

Can I carry more than two weapons with a bigger pack?

By default you carry two weapons and a melee. Some higher-tier backpacks add weapon slots, which is one more reason to chase the bigger packs.
