Yes, Helldivers 2 has full crossplay between PC on Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, so a squad of up to four can mix all three platforms in the same mission. What it does not have is cross-progression: your level, unlocks and currencies stay on the platform where you earned them. Adding a friend from another platform also takes one extra step, a friend code, which is where most people get stuck.
We checked this against Xbox Wire, the official Steam store listing, Arrowhead's Steam announcements and the Helldivers wiki's troubleshooting pages in November 2026.
Which Platforms Play Together
Helldivers 2 launched on 8 February 2024 on PC and PlayStation 5, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by PlayStation Publishing. PC and PS5 players could squad up from day one. The big change came on 26 August 2025, when the game arrived on Xbox Series X|S. Xbox Wire's announcement promised "cross play on all platforms," and that is how it works today: a Steam player, a PS5 player and two Xbox players can all drop into the same Hellpod volley.

The Steam store page describes the core structure plainly: you are assembled into squads of up to four Helldivers and sent on strategic missions. That four-player limit is the same on every platform, and crossplay does not change it. Mixed squads also share the same Galactic War, so a kill on Xbox counts toward a Major Order exactly like a kill on PC.
Platform performance has kept improving. The 7.2.0 update on 20 October 2026 listed CPU optimizations for smoother frame pacing, calling out lower core-count CPUs and the Xbox Series S specifically. If someone in your squad is on Series S, that patch is worth knowing about when they report stutter in heavy fights.
Xbox players had two ways in at launch, the Standard Edition and the Super Citizen Edition, and Xbox Wire listed a Premium Warbond Token among the Super Citizen extras. Whichever edition your friends buy, they land in the same crossplay pool as everyone else, and the edition has no effect on who they can play with.
Adding Friends From Another Platform
Your platform friends list (Steam, PSN or Xbox) only covers people on the same platform. For anyone else, Helldivers 2 uses its own friend system inside the Social tab. The flow that the Helldivers wiki recommends looks like this:
- Both players make sure crossplay is switched on. The wiki says to do this even when both players are on the same platform, because friend features can misbehave with it off.
- One player opens the Social tab and generates a Friend Code.
- They send that code to the other player, who enters it in the Social tab to send a request.
- The first player keeps the Social tab open until the new request arrives, then accepts it.
The most common mistake is what happens after a failed attempt. If a request gets stuck, the wiki advises cancelling pending requests from the sender's side and specifically warns against pressing "Decline" or "Remove Friend," since that will likely block the other player. Only Arrowhead can clear a block once it is set, which means a support ticket. A few minutes of patience saves a few days of waiting.
If your friends list keeps showing "Please Wait Democratically" and never updates, the wiki lists platform fixes: on PC, closing the game and clearing the Helldivers 2 settings folder in AppData, plus making sure your Steam profile is public; on PS5, clearing the console cache. These do not erase progress, but read the full steps on the wiki before deleting anything.
Turning Crossplay On or Off
On PC and PS5, crossplay is a setting inside the game. On Xbox it works differently: the wiki notes that crossplay is controlled in the console's own settings, not in the game menu. That catches Xbox players out when they hunt through the Options screen and find nothing.

Why would you turn it off? The wiki's troubleshooting page says some PC and PS5 players see stability problems that often stop when crossplay is disabled. Turning it off is a reasonable test if you crash in matchmaking, but remember that it also limits who you can play with. Historically there has been friction here as well: patch 1.002.001 fixed a bug where friend code features went missing when crossplay was disabled, which is part of why the wiki still recommends leaving it on while you add people.
Turning crossplay off does not change difficulty, rewards or the Galactic War. It only narrows the matchmaking pool for Quickplay and SOS beacons, which can make filling a squad slower at off-peak hours. If you mostly play with a fixed group on one platform, that trade may not matter to you at all.
Accounts, Subscriptions and Progress
This is the part that matters most if you are thinking of switching platforms. A Pure Xbox guide written for the Xbox launch states there is no form of cross-progression in Helldivers 2. Your level, ship modules, Warbond unlocks, medals and Super Credits stay on the platform where you earned them. If you have a level 150 Helldiver on PS5 and buy the game on Xbox, you start again from training.
On console, online play needs the platform's paid subscription. Xbox Wire's launch post says gameplay requires internet access and a paid subscription on console, sold separately. On Steam, the store listing shows PlayStation Network under third-party accounts as "Supports Linking to Steam Account," so linking is offered rather than demanded by that listing.
Because progress is split, the platform choice matters for long goals. The cap now sits at level 300, a long climb explained in our level cap guide, and you will not want to repeat it on a second platform.
Fairness in Mixed Lobbies
Crossplay means console players share lobbies with PC players, so anti-cheat matters to everyone. On 20 October 2026 Arrowhead moved Helldivers 2 from GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat, adding extra security tools and cracking down on cheat mods that had been circulating. The studio said EAC is used in over 200 games, that there were no new hardware requirements, and that Steam Deck and Linux compatibility stays the same.
Arrowhead also addressed mods directly. It said cosmetic, non-gameplay mods are appreciated but may need updates from their creators to keep working with EAC, and that it cannot judge which mods are safe to use, so using any mod is at your own discretion. Mods that affect other players are the ones the change was built to stop.
Earlier, in July 2026, Arrowhead began monitoring for Super Credit earning rates far above anything a real player has recorded, aimed at bots and duplication exploits, with the same approach rolling out to medals, samples and Requisition. Normal play is not affected, and the studio pointed anyone with a question to its player support.
Making Mixed Squads Work
A few habits make cross-platform squads run smoother. Agree on a host before you start, since the host's game is the one everyone else joins. Settle on a difficulty the whole group can clear, because a failed mission does nothing for the planet. And keep pings and voice chat in use, because a console player may not see a text message mid-fight.
If Quickplay and the difficulty selector disappear, and planets look locked, the wiki's fix is to complete a mission on Azur Secundus in the Sten Sector on the Terminid front, which restores normal selection afterward. If that planet is unavailable, the wiki points you to Arrowhead's player support.
Finally, coordinate what the squad brings. Mixed groups often lack a plan for clearing nests, so make sure at least two people pack throwables that close Bug Holes and Fabricators; our grenade guide covers which ones work. Check the live Major Order together too, so your sessions push the same planet. A squad that splits its evenings between three different fronts contributes far less to the community goal than one that agrees on a target.
Level gaps are the other friction point. A new player who just bought the game on Xbox can join a veteran's squad right away, but they will not own the same stratagems, and levels only unlock so much. Most core stratagems unlock by around level 25, so a fresh recruit catches up on loadout options faster than the level number suggests. Let the newer player pick a difficulty they can survive for the first few sessions, and share support weapons by calling in an extra for them when you can.
New friends just joining from another platform will also get a lot out of our beginner guide, and the best settings guide helps PC players tune performance.
Catching Up With Your Squad
The hardest part of crossplay is often the level gap: a new friend joins your PC or PS5 squad without the stratagems and Warbond gear everyone else uses. If you would rather close that gap faster, the store's Helldivers 2 boosting hub lists services for level boosts, Super Credits, medals, Requisition Slips and ship modules on Steam and PlayStation. Check current availability on each listing before you plan around one. The hub does not cover Xbox, so Xbox players should stick to in-game progress.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Helldivers 2 crossplay between PS5 and PC?
Yes. PC on Steam and PS5 have played together since launch in February 2024, and Xbox Series X|S joined the same crossplay pool in August 2025.
Is Helldivers 2 cross-progression?
No. Progress, unlocks and currencies stay on the platform where you earned them, so switching platforms means starting a new Helldiver.
How do I add a friend on another platform in Helldivers 2?
Open the Social tab, generate a Friend Code and send it to your friend, who enters it to send a request. Keep crossplay on while you do it, and never press Decline or Remove Friend on a stuck request.
How do I turn off crossplay on Xbox?
On Xbox, crossplay is controlled in the console's settings rather than the game's menu. On PC and PS5 the option is inside the game.
Do I need a subscription to play Helldivers 2 online on console?
Yes. On PS5 and Xbox you need the console's paid online membership to play, on top of the game itself. The requirement in the Xbox announcement is worded for console play.
How many players can be in a Helldivers 2 squad?
Up to four Helldivers per squad, on every platform and in mixed-platform lobbies.
