Legendary items in Ghost of Yotei Legends are the top tier of co-op gear, and you get them by playing on higher difficulties: Sucker Punch's own description is that loot arrives as you level up, while harder challenges reward additional Legendary weapons and gear. The named legendaries confirmed in the official patch notes are Mountain Breaker, Lightning's Bite, the Thunderous Yari, the Vanishing Kusarigama, the Thunderous Katana, a Legendary Spirit Kunai and the returning Weightless Spirit. Below is what each one does, where to farm them and how to upgrade, reroll or retire gear once you have it.
We checked this against Sucker Punch's patch notes for versions 1.511, 1.512, 1.600 and 1.601, the PlayStation Blog's Legends announcement and explainer, Game Rant's Legends gear upgrade guide, PowerPyx's Legends trophy roadmap and Playnews' Legends co-op guide in November 2026.
What Legendary Means in Legends
Gear in Legends climbs a rarity ladder. Game Rant's upgrade guide walks through Uncommon, Rare and Epic and notes there are higher tiers above Epic, with the reroll options only opening once an item reaches Epic quality or better. Playnews' Legends guide spells out the full color code: white common gear has no properties, green uncommon gear has one property, blue rare gear adds a perk, purple epic gear carries two properties and a perk, and orange legendary gear adds a unique legendary ability on top. The store page for the Legends save refers to the same top tier as golden weapons, so expect both names in community discussions.

Every property also carries a letter grade, and the grade matters as much as the item. PowerPyx's raid notes are blunt about it: a build that sits below A tier on all gear properties will not stand a chance against the raid bosses, and even the jump from a B-minus to an A-plus grade makes a visible difference. That is why a legendary with weak grades can lose to a well-rolled epic, and why the upgrade systems below are worth learning before you start hoarding drops.
The Named Legendaries From the Official Patch Notes
Sucker Punch's patch notes do not include a full loot table, but update 1.600 on April 6, 2026 buffed the legendary melee weapons and named them in the process. Here is what the notes confirm:
- Mountain Breaker: restores health on Execution Strikes after the 1.600 buff, which makes it the sustain pick for melee builds.
- Lightning's Bite: carries a lightning strike that now deals additional damage.
- Thunderous Yari: creates a Thundering Wave whose radius was increased in 1.600.
- Vanishing Kusarigama: has a vanish effect whose duration was extended in the same update.
- Thunderous Katana: throws enemies, and 1.600 raised that throw chance to a certainty.
- Legendary Spirit Kunai: kills from status effects now reduce your cooldowns.
- Weightless Spirit: added in 1.600 as a returning Legendary weapon.
The same update added four new charms, and community reports summarized by MP1st say they mix existing properties rather than adding new ones. Treat the list above as the confirmed names rather than a complete catalog, because the patch notes do not list drop sources or drop rates for any of them.
Where Legendaries Drop
Difficulty is the main lever. Legends missions replay on Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, and the PlayStation Blog's explainer says higher difficulties grant faster XP, faster class advancement and better loot. In practice that makes Gold and Platinum the tiers to target as soon as your gear can handle them, with Bronze and Silver serving mainly as the warm-up for a new class.

The weekly Nightmare missions are the other farm worth your time. Since update 1.600 they give quickplay rewards and count toward quickplay feats, and update 1.601 added a "Matchmake to fill empty slots" option to them, so you no longer need a full premade group to run one. Patch 1.511 had already unlocked quickplay for Survival missions by default, and 1.601 made uncompleted daily bounties refresh every day, which keeps a steady supply of upgrade materials flowing between legendary drops.
Ki controls which of those activities you can reach. Each difficulty shows a recommended gear level, and the game warns you, without stopping you, when your gear is below it. Patch 1.512 on March 20, 2026 then added minimum Ki levels to matchmaking and adjusted the recommendations to better match the content, so you can still push a hard mission with friends, but public queues now enforce a floor.
The Raid is not a legendary weapon farm. Game Rant's raid walkthrough says each of the two raids rewards a different cosmetic outfit for each class, and update 1.601 added further class cosmetics for beating the Hell Mode bosses. Those are prestige rewards for your look, so keep Gold, Platinum and Nightmare runs as your weapon farm, and read our Legends raid guide before taking new gear into the Dragon or Saito fights.
How Many Legendaries You Can Equip
You cannot simply stack every legendary you find. Two community guides, the games.gg class breakdown and Playnews' co-op guide, report that you start with room for a single legendary and that a rank 24 passive lets you equip one more. The store's Legends save page describes the normal limit in the same terms, as two golden weapons. Sucker Punch has not stated the rule in its patch notes, so check your class's tech tree in game before planning a build around two legendaries.
Ki is the second number that governs your loadout. Playnews describes Ki as the level of a single piece of equipment and your overall Ki as the average of your seven equipped slots, which raises the damage you deal and slightly reduces the damage you take. A single low-level item therefore drags the whole average down, which is why a strong legendary with a low Ki is often worth upgrading rather than benching.
Upgrading, Rerolling, Dismantling and Retiring Gear
Game Rant's upgrade guide explains the workflow. In the hub, walk to the floating rocks, interact with the rock on the right, select a piece of gear and press Square. Depending on rarity, you get up to four options: raise the item's Ki by one, improve its rarity, reroll its property or reroll its perk. The two reroll options only unlock at Epic quality or higher, and rarity upgrades are gated by Gear Score: moving from Uncommon to Rare needs 40, moving from Rare to Epic needs 80, and higher tiers need more.
Materials come from three places in that guide: daily bounties, challenge modifiers in story missions from Silver difficulty upward, and dismantling gear you no longer need. Patch 1.511 increased the currency you get for dismantling, so clearing out weak drops is a real income source rather than busywork. Playnews adds a useful warning: a reroll changes which effect a property has but not its grade, so a piece with two strong grades is a better upgrade target than one with a flashy effect on a weak grade.
Game Rant's advice on Ki upgrades points the same way. Raising an item's Ki one level at a time is most worthwhile on a weapon whose perks and properties you already want to keep, because a fresh drop of higher rarity may roll worse. For a legendary that fits your class and has good grades, steady Ki upgrades usually beat waiting for a replacement that may never roll as well.
Once a piece is perfected, update 1.601's Gear Retirement feature lets you spend in-game currency to retire it. Sucker Punch is explicit that it gives no gameplay advantage. The retirement count is visible to other players and attracts fireflies when you bow, which makes it the mode's prestige track for players who have already finished everything else.
Matching Legendaries to Your Class
Because the patch notes describe what each legendary does, you can pair them sensibly even without a published loot table. The Vanishing Kusarigama suits the Shinobi, whose vanish already stops the Dragon's bombs from tracking you according to lead designer Darren Bridges, so a longer vanish buys more time in the raid's worst moments. The Thunderous Yari fits the Archer, whose focus weapon is the yari, when enemies close the distance.
Mountain Breaker is the most flexible pick, since healing on Execution Strikes helps any melee build that struggles to stay alive, and it pairs naturally with a stagger-focused Samurai, the class PowerPyx recommends against Lord Saito. The Legendary Spirit Kunai rewards builds that apply status effects, because those kills feed back into shorter cooldowns. For a full breakdown of which class suits which role, see our Legends classes guide, and the Raid's Kaibyaku trophy is covered in our trophy guide.
Skipping the Loot Grind
Farming Platinum and Nightmare runs until the right properties roll at the right grades is the slowest part of Legends. The store's Legends mode save is built for players who want to skip that loop: its page lists more than 250 epic weapons, each in 11 versions carrying two modified perks, every perk at max level S+, seven golden weapons equippable at once against the normal limit of two, loadouts that stack a single shared perk past 500 percent, and infinite Crystal, Blessing and Essence currency.
Read the notes on that page before ordering. The save is PS5 only, PlayStation Plus is required on the same account being modded, and you must already own the game. Because the roster can overfill your inventory, the page says you may see a "Gear inventory is full (400/300)" message and need to dismantle items before picking up more, and since Legends is online co-op you will be matched with other players. Everything else for the game is on the Ghost of Yotei hub.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you get legendary gear in Ghost of Yotei Legends?
Play on higher difficulties. Sucker Punch says harder challenges reward additional Legendary weapons and gear, so Gold and Platinum missions and the weekly Nightmare missions are the best places to farm them.
How many legendary items can you equip in Legends?
Community guides report one legendary slot at first and a second once a rank 24 passive unlocks. Sucker Punch has not confirmed the rule in its patch notes, so check your class tree in game.
What does Ki mean in Ghost of Yotei Legends?
Ki is the level of your gear. Your overall Ki is the average of your equipped pieces, it raises your damage, and since patch 1.512 matchmaking enforces a minimum Ki for harder content.
Can you reroll the perk on a legendary?
Game Rant's upgrade guide says the property and perk rerolls open once an item reaches Epic quality or higher, which covers legendary gear. Rerolls use the hub's upgrade rock and cost crafting materials.
What is Gear Retirement in Legends?
Added in update 1.601, it lets you spend currency to retire perfected gear. It gives no gameplay advantage; the retirement count is visible to other players and draws fireflies when you bow.
Will more legendaries be added to Ghost of Yotei Legends?
Probably not. In a May 2026 interview, lead designer Darren Bridges said the Raid was the last major planned update for Legends and that it finishes the story of the Yotei Six in that mode.
