Age verification for a Discord account is now handled mostly in the background: since late September 2026, Discord places most accounts into an adult, teen or unconfirmed age group automatically, and only asks you to confirm your age if you are unconfirmed or misplaced and want something age-restricted. When you do need to confirm, you start at User Settings, then Account Status, and choose from methods such as an app store age range, a credit card check, an on-device video selfie or an ID scan. The details differ in the UK, Australia, Texas and Brazil, so we break those out below.
We checked this against Discord's September 22, 2026 blog post on teen safety, the Help Center articles on confirming your age group, regional age group pages, teen protections and data retention, and the Terms of Service, all in November 2026.
What Changed in September 2026
On September 22, 2026, Discord co-founder and CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy published a post titled "Safer for Teens, Same Discord for Adults." It announced that automatic age group placement would begin the next day and roll out over about a week, and that more than 90% of users would not be asked to confirm their age. This replaced the earlier plan that drew heavy criticism in February 2026, which many users read as a demand for face scans or ID from everyone.

The automatic placement relies on account-level signals. Discord names how long the account has existed, the kinds of servers it is in, the communities and games it is connected to, and general activity levels. It also states that it does not look at your messages, calls or other content to decide the age group, and that no single server or friend decides it. Accounts that had already confirmed their age kept that status.
Every account ends up in one of three groups. Adults (18+) see no change. Teens (13 to 17) get extra protections. Unconfirmed is used when Discord does not yet have enough signal; those accounts can keep using Discord but get most of the teen protections until they confirm.
How It Works in Your Region
Discord keeps a "Find Your Region" directory because a few places follow different rules. If your country is not listed, the global approach above applies.
| Region | How the age group is set | Notable detail |
|---|---|---|
| Most countries | Automatic age estimation model, confirm only if needed | Global rollout began September 23, 2026 |
| United Kingdom | No estimation model; protections apply until you confirm 18+ | Tied to the Online Safety Act |
| Australia | No estimation model; protections apply until you confirm 18+ | Enhanced safety features since December 9, 2025 |
| Texas | Age range shared from the Apple App Store or Google Play when you open the app | Required by the App Store Accountability Act |
| Brazil | Age assurance with teen protections | Rollout started March 9, 2026 for the Digital ECA |
The UK and Australia are the biggest exceptions. In both, Discord says it does not use the estimation model to place accounts automatically, so the extra safety settings apply until a user confirms they are 18 or older. Texas is different again: the app checks the age range on your Apple or Google account as soon as you open Discord, and an under-13 result disables the account. Brazil's age assurance started on March 9, 2026, ahead of the Digital Statute for Children and Adolescents taking effect on March 17.
Texas also hands parents a switch that sits outside Discord. If a parent removes a teen's permission to use Discord through the device's app store parental controls, the account is blocked until that permission is restored, and Discord says there is no appeal through Discord for this kind of block. The servers, friends list and message history stay intact and come back if access is restored within Discord's standard two-year retention window; after that the account is treated like any other inactive one and can be deleted.
Do You Actually Need to Verify?
For most people the answer is no. Discord's FAQ says you do not need to confirm your age group just to use Discord. Messaging friends, voice calls and servers that are not age-restricted all work the same for teen and unconfirmed accounts. Confirmation only matters if you are an adult who wants something the protections block.

Here is what the teen protections change, according to Discord's teen safety article:
- Sensitive media. Flagged images and videos are blurred in DMs from friends and in server channels, and blocked in DMs from strangers. Choosing "Show" requires adult confirmation.
- Age-restricted spaces. Servers, channels and app commands marked 18+ are off limits.
- Message requests. DMs from non-friends go to a separate inbox, and turning that off requires adult confirmation.
- Stage channels. You can listen but cannot speak.
- Profile and activity. Shared only with friends and small servers under 200 members, though teens can change this. Unconfirmed accounts keep the wider "friends and all servers" setting.
iPhone and iPad users have one extra switch to know about. Discord's teen safety article describes a setting called "Allow access to age-restricted servers on iOS" that is off by default. It is an additional step adults must take on iOS, on top of confirming their age, before 18+ servers open on that device. It does not exist on Android, and teen accounts stay blocked regardless of how it is set, so if you have confirmed you are an adult and an age-restricted server still will not open on your phone, check this toggle before contacting support.
Your age group is not shown on your profile or to other members, and it is separate from rule violations. Being unconfirmed does not lower your Discord account standing in any way.
Confirming Your Age Group, Step by Step
Go to User Settings, then Account Status, and tap Confirm Age. You can also start from the prompt that appears when you hit an age-restricted server or setting. On mobile, Discord notes you need app version 343.0 or later to see the age group status. Then choose a method; which ones appear depends on your region and device.
- Apple App Store or Google Play. Shares only an age range from your store account, not your birthdate.
- Credit card. Processed by the vendor k-ID through Stripe. A temporary charge under $0.50 USD may appear and is refunded within 14 business days. Only credit cards work; debit and prepaid cards are not accepted because they can be issued to minors.
- Google Wallet. Uses a passport saved in Google Wallet. Discord lists support for passports from Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK and the US only.
- Video selfie. Facial age estimation that runs entirely on your device.
- ID scan. A photo of a government ID plus a selfie, checked by k-ID.
- AgeKey. A reusable age credential set up once through k-ID that can be reused across services.
When it finishes, Discord sends a DM from its official profile with the result, and the status appears in Account Status. Sometimes Discord asks for a second method if it needs more confidence.
What Happens to Your Data
Discord's position is that it never receives your ID, selfie or card details, only an age signal from the vendor. Its age group article says ID images and documents are permanently deleted once your age group is confirmed, and that the video selfie never leaves your device. The data retention page adds one nuance worth knowing: for the credit card method, the payment provider typically keeps a financial record with truncated card details, the amount and a timestamp for up to 10 years, in line with financial rules. Discord publishes its list of vendors and their privacy standards on its safety site.
The biggest practical risk is not the official flow but impostors. Discord says it will never ask you to confirm your age by email or text, and that age assurance only happens inside the app. Any message outside Discord with a "verify your age" link is fake. If you already clicked one and entered your login, our Discord account recovery guide covers what to lock down first.
When the Result Is Wrong
Discord admits that age estimation works on patterns, so a small share of accounts land in the wrong group. If you are an adult placed in the teen group, return to Account Status and tap Retry with a different method. Discord notes the methods you see may change after earlier attempts, and there may be a limit on retries for a given method.
The more serious case is an account flagged as below the minimum age for its region, which is at least 13 and as high as 16 in some countries. Those accounts are suspended, but the suspension screen includes a Minimum Age Requirements violation with a button to confirm your age, and Discord says that check is typically processed within seconds. If you need the full appeal route instead, our Discord ban appeal guide explains it.
Parents of teens should know the age group also controls Family Center. A parent can only link to an account in the teen group, and the link ends automatically when the teen's age group updates to adult. Our guide to setting up Discord for kids and teens covers that side.
Age Groups and Account Listings
Because age signals partly come from account history, a few people ask whether an older account changes anything. The Discord hub on this store shows account listings from outside sellers, which vary daily. Discord's Terms of Service state that you agree not to license, sell, lend or transfer an account or username without Discord's prior written approval, and they also require every user to be at least 13 and to meet their country's minimum age.
Age confirmation is tied to the person, not the account history. A new owner of any account would still go through the same Account Status flow, with the same methods and limits described above.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Discord age verification mandatory?
Not for general use. Discord says most users are placed automatically and nobody has to confirm their age to message friends, join voice calls or use servers that are not age-restricted. You only confirm to unlock age-restricted content, spaces or settings.
Can I verify my age on Discord without an ID?
Yes. Depending on region and device, you may be offered an Apple or Google age range, a credit card check, Google Wallet, an on-device video selfie or AgeKey. The ID scan is only one of several options.
Why does Discord think I am a teen?
The estimation model works on account patterns such as account age, server types and activity, and Discord admits some accounts land in the wrong group. Use Retry in Account Status to confirm with another method.
Does Discord keep my selfie or ID?
Discord says it does not receive them. The video selfie is processed on your device, and ID scan images are deleted once your age group is confirmed. Only the age signal reaches Discord.
Does the credit card age check charge me?
A small temporary charge under $0.50 USD may be placed to validate the card, and Discord says it is fully refunded within 14 business days. Debit and prepaid cards are not accepted.
Why is age verification different in the UK and Australia?
Discord does not use its estimation model in those two countries, so the extra safety settings stay on until a user confirms they are 18 or older. The UK setup follows the Online Safety Act.
