There are nine covenants in Dark Souls and Dark Souls Remastered: Way of White, Princess's Guard, Warrior of Sunlight, Darkwraith, Forest Hunter, Blade of the Darkmoon, Gravelord Servant, Path of the Dragon and Chaos Servant. Three are built around co-op, five around PvP and one, the Chaos Servants, around humanity offerings and a shortcut. You can only belong to one at a time, and each rewards offerings with spells, gear or rings at set ranks.
We checked every requirement, offering and reward below against the Fextralife Dark Souls wiki's covenant pages and the Remastered changes page, plus the official achievement list, in November 2026.
How Covenants Work
Most covenants have ranks from +0 to +3. You climb by handing over the covenant's offering item: 10 total offerings for rank +1, 30 for rank +2 and 80 for rank +3. Anything past 80 gives no further benefit, and the wiki notes the maximum donation is 100. The Chaos Servants are the exception, accepting far larger humanity donations that only change your standing on the Chaos Roster.

Switching is where people get caught out. Joining a new covenant abandons your current one, and in the original release that counts as a sin, which makes you a target for Darkmoon invasions until Oswald of Carim absolves you for a fee of 500 souls per character level. Breaking a covenant's rules also abandons it. Either way you lose half your offerings and your rank drops to match. Dark Souls Remastered softened this: you can now abandon a covenant from the bonfire menu without gaining sin.
A separate mechanic, indictment, comes from other players. If an invader kills you, you can indict them, which places them in the Book of the Guilty and makes them a target for Darkmoon invasions. Oswald cannot absolve indictments.
The Co-op Covenants
Way of White. Speak with Petrus of Thorolund at Firelink Shrine to join, or with Reah of Thorolund in the Undead Parish after rescuing her from the Tomb of the Giants. It has no known ranks; its benefit is easier matchmaking with other co-op covenants and, reportedly, fewer invasions.
Princess's Guard. After you defeat Ornstein and Smough, take the lift up to the Royal Bedchamber in Anor Londo and speak with Gwynevere. The covenant has no ranks, but joining gives you the Ring of the Sun Princess and access to the Soothing Sunlight and Bountiful Sunlight miracles. Those miracles come from killing the two crying Pisaca at the bottom of the Archive Prison Tower in the Duke's Archives.
Warrior of Sunlight. The best-known covenant in the game. Pray at the Broken Altar to the right of the Sunlight Altar bonfire in the Undead Parish, under the Hellkite Wyvern. You need 25 Faith, reduced by 5 for each boss you have helped kill as a white phantom, and password summons in Remastered count toward that. Members appear as golden phantoms, and clearing a boss as a golden phantom earns a Sunlight Medal for everyone in the session. Rank 0 gives Lightning Spear, rank +1 at 10 medals gives Great Lightning Spear, and from rank +1 you can offer the Soul of Gwyn for the Sunlight Spear.
The PvP Covenants
Darkwraith. The most involved to join. First defeat Great Grey Wolf Sif for the Covenant of Artorias ring, which lets you enter the Abyss. Then either kill Ingward for the Key to the Seal before you have the Lordvessel, or get the key from him after obtaining the Lordvessel as long as you have not spoken to Frampt or placed it. In the Abyss, answer yes to Kaathe and accept the covenant. The offering is humanity.

- Rank 0: the Dark Hand, and Cracked Red Eye Orbs for sale from Kaathe.
- Rank +1 (10 humanity): the Red Eye Orb, for unlimited invasions.
- Rank +2 (30): the Darksword and the Darkwraith armor set.
- Rank +3 (80): no item, but the Dark Hand can steal more humanity per grab.
Joining makes Frampt disappear, which matters for the ending you are steering toward; our Dark Souls endings guide explains how Kaathe and Frampt fit into the final choice.
Forest Hunter. Talk to Alvina of the Darkroot Wood, who stands just before the bridge to the ruined structure in Darkroot Garden, and say yes to her questions. She gives you the Cat Covenant Ring, which puts you in a queue to invade anyone who enters the first part of the forest. One win earns a Divine Blessing and three wins earn the Ring of Fog. Attacking Alvina, Shiva or the non-hostile hunters breaks the covenant.
Blade of the Darkmoon. You need the Darkmoon Seance Ring from the Catacombs. Equip it in Anor Londo near the Darkmoon Tomb bonfire to make a statue vanish, then kneel on the carpet in front of Gwyndolin's fog wall after he speaks. Walking into the fog counts as betrayal. Members hunt players who have sinned, using the Blue Eye Orb at rank 0, and turn in Souvenirs of Reprisal to rank up: 10 gives the Darkmoon Blade miracle and Darkmoon Talisman, and higher ranks raise the miracle's power.
Gravelord Servant and Path of the Dragon
Gravelord Servant. In the Catacombs crypt guarded by the Titanite Demon, one coffin sticks out further than the rest and is empty. Lie in it and wait 10 to 15 seconds, and you end up in Gravelord Nito's domain, where you join at the far coffin in the large room. The offering is the Eye of Death. Rank 0 gives the Gravelord Sword and the Gravelord Sword Dance miracle, which needs no Faith; rank +1 at 10 Eyes adds Gravelord Greatsword Dance, and each rank boosts both miracles by a further 10 percent. Using an Eye of Death in an area where you have not beaten the boss spreads a curse into other players' worlds and lets them invade you to lift it.
Path of the Dragon. Reach Ash Lake, a hidden optional area reached from Blighttown's swamp, and pray to the Everlasting Dragon at the end. Dragon Scales are the offering. Rank 0 gives the Dragon Eye and the Dragon Head Stone, and rank +2 at 30 scales adds the Dragon Torso Stone. The Head Stone breathes fire and the Torso Stone's roar buffs your attack, and every rank strengthens both, which makes this the most unusual PvP style in the game.
Chaos Servant and Its Shortcut
The Daughter of Chaos sits behind a false wall on the first floor of the room behind Quelaag, the Blighttown boss. To reach her, tell Eingyi at the entrance that you are interested; saying no blocks the covenant until you kill him or request absolution from Oswald. Joining grants the Great Chaos Fireball pyromancy straight away.
The offering is humanity. At rank +2, after 30 offerings, you receive Chaos Storm and a shortcut to Lost Izalith opens, which stays open even if you later leave the covenant. That shortcut is a genuine time saver for the late game, and stocking 30 humanity is easier than it sounds if you follow our humanity farming routes.
Covenants and the Achievement List
Every covenant has its own trophy or achievement, nine in total, from Covenant: Way of White to Covenant: Chaos Servant. The good news is in how they unlock: according to the wiki, the achievement pops when you receive the dialogue offering you the choice to join, whether or not you actually join. You do not need to rank up, and you do not need to stay.
The ones players miss are the hidden ones: Path of the Dragon in Ash Lake, Gravelord Servant behind the coffin, Blade of the Darkmoon behind the Seance Ring, and the Darkwraith if you place the Lordvessel with Frampt before visiting Kaathe. Our Dark Souls Remastered trophy guide covers how to collect all nine in one run, and our boss order breakdown shows where in the route each opportunity appears.
A note on online play in November 2026: FromSoftware's current server suspension covers Dark Souls II and Dark Souls III, and Dark Souls Remastered is not named in it. Covenant discovery works offline regardless.
Which Covenant Should You Join?
For a first playthrough, Warrior of Sunlight is the easy recommendation. Co-op is how most players learn the bosses, the golden phantom look is iconic, and Lightning Spear is useful from the start. Faith builds get more from it, but the boss-help reduction means any build can qualify eventually.
If you enjoy PvP, the Darkwraiths and Forest Hunters give the most invasions, and the Blade of the Darkmoon suits players who prefer to punish invaders. Pyromancers should visit the Chaos Servants for the Lost Izalith shortcut at least once. And whatever you pick, use the Remastered bonfire option to switch without the sin penalty when it is time to move on.
Starting Fresh With Spells and Gear
Several covenant rewards are spells, and a full spell list takes a lot of play to build. The store's Dark Souls Remastered modded starter save includes a level 1 character with all items, all weapons, all magic and 999,999,999 souls, plus a level 5 character without magic and a third that adds infinite health and stamina, according to its product page.
It is a PS4 and PS5 product, and you need your own copy of Dark Souls Remastered because only the save is sold. Read the details on the Dark Souls Remastered modded save page, or see everything in the Dark Souls section.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many covenants are in Dark Souls Remastered?
Nine, the same as the original: three co-op, five PvP and the Chaos Servants.
Can you be in two covenants at once?
No. Joining a new one abandons the current one and costs half your offerings.
How do you leave a covenant without sin in Remastered?
Use the abandon option in the bonfire menu. In the original release, switching counted as a sin that Oswald had to absolve.
Do you have to join a covenant to get the achievement?
No. The wiki says it unlocks when the game offers you the choice to join.
How do I get the Sunlight Spear?
Reach rank +1 in the Warrior of Sunlight covenant with 10 Sunlight Medals, then offer the Soul of Gwyn at the altar in the Undead Parish.
Why can I not join the Warrior of Sunlight?
You probably lack Faith. You need 25, minus 5 for each boss you helped defeat as a summoned white phantom.
