The Borderlands 4 level cap is 70 as of November 2026. It started at 50 at launch, rose to 60 in the free March 26, 2026 update that shipped alongside Story Pack 1, and went up another 10 levels with Version 1.10 on September 10, 2026, again free for every player. Below is what each increase changed, how many skill points you get, how Specializations and Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode extend progression past the cap, and the fastest ways to close the gap.
We checked this against Gearbox's official update notes for March 26 and September 10, 2026, the official 2026 roadmap, PC Gamer's max level guide and the Borderlands Fandom wiki's Specializations and Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode pages in November 2026.
How the Level Cap Has Changed Since Launch
Borderlands 4 launched with a cap of 50. PC Gamer's launch-week guide noted that Borderlands 3 also started at 50 and was raised through free updates, and Gearbox followed the same path here. When it published its 2026 roadmap in January, the studio wrote that it would increase the Vault Hunter level cap for all players in future updates, without giving a date.

The first increase landed on March 26, 2026. The official notes for that Major Update list a 10-level increase to a max level of 60 under free content, available to every player whether or not they own Story Pack 1: Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned. The second came with Version 1.10 on September 10, 2026, whose notes say it raises the max level cap by 10 levels for all Borderlands 4 players. That puts the current cap at 70.
Both increases arrived on the same day as paid Story Packs, but neither was locked behind them. If you want to see how the cap changes line up with every pack and free raid, our Borderlands 4 DLC timeline shows them side by side.
How Many Skill Points You Get at 70
Character levels feed your skill trees. PC Gamer's launch guide counted 49 skill points at the original level 50 cap, one for each level after the first. On the same one-point-per-level basis, the two 10-level increases bring that to 69 points at level 70.
That extra headroom matters because Borderlands 4 trees are deep. PC Gamer explains that every five points you spend unlocks the next layer of a tree, with the final tier needing one extra point, and that at 49 points most builds sat almost entirely in a single tree with only a handful in a second. Twenty more points makes a meaningful second-tree investment realistic for the first time. If you have been holding a build together with compromises, the cap increases are a good moment to revisit it, and our guide to respeccing in Borderlands 4 explains how to refund points at a Respec Machine.
Augments and capstones work differently. PC Gamer notes they do not cost points to slot, though you can only have one of each equipped at a time (Vex's Dark Pact capstone is the stated exception).
What Happens After You Hit the Cap: Specializations
Character level is not the end of XP. The Fandom wiki explains that once you complete the main missions, earned XP also goes toward Specialization levels, a separate system from your class level, and every Specialization level gives one point. PC Gamer describes the same Specialisation XP bar as able to level up hundreds of times.

Points go into nodes that grant stat buffs with diminishing returns after the first point:
- Four base nodes are available as soon as Specializations unlock: Brute, Runner, Sharpshooter and Survivor.
- Three prestige nodes (Daredevil, Gadgeteer and Killer) open after you put ten points into each of their two parent base nodes.
- Each node has three skills that unlock at 1, 10 and 20 points, and you can equip four Specialization skills at once, swapping them freely.
- The wiki lists an in-game cap of 100 points per node, which makes 700 the effective maximum Specialization level.
The skill names give a feel for each node. According to the wiki, Brute holds Lead or Alive, CQC and Riddle You This; Runner holds Bear Arms, Bullet Train and Groundbreaker; Sharpshooter holds Down But Not Out, In the Zone and One Shot, One Kill; and Survivor holds Sturdy Stuff, Bullets Are Scared of Me and The Best Defense. The prestige nodes add Now With Caffeine, I am a Gun and A Honed Mind under Daredevil, Tripwire, Full Spectrum Arsenal and Fragmentation Payload under Gadgeteer, and Contamination, Compounding Afflictions and Overkill under Killer. Since only four can be slotted, most players pick two nodes that match their build and push them to 20 for the third skill before spreading points elsewhere. Our existing skill trees and Specialization explainer goes into how the two systems interact.
Respeccing Specialization points is a separate machine from skill respecs. Gearbox's October 23, 2025 update cut the Specialization Respec Machine cost from 5,000 Eridium to 1,500.
Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode Ranks
The other post-cap ladder is Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode, which the Fandom wiki describes as a post-game mode with seven levels. Each level makes enemies tougher but also raises the cash, Eridium and XP they award, and it improves dedicated drop chances, world drop amounts and the chance of firmware on gear. The wiki lists the adjustments per rank:
| UVHM level | Enemy health | Damage to player | Bonus cash and Eridium | Bonus XP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | +150% | +12% | +20% | +10% |
| 2 | +200% | +14% | +25% | +12.5% |
| 3 | +250% | +16% | +30% | +15% |
| 4 | +300% | +18% | +35% | +17.5% |
| 5 | +350% | +20% | +40% | +20% |
| 6 | +400% | +22% | +45% | +22.5% |
| 7 | +450% | +24% | +50% | +25% |
Ranks unlock through set bosses and missions. The wiki lists Bloomreaper the Invincible as the requirement for level 6 and Subjugator and Thol the Invincible for level 7. Higher ranks also gate exclusive firmware: Skillcraft drops only at UVHM 6 and above, and Active Fire only at UVHM 7, which our Borderlands 4 firmware list covers in full.
Fastest Ways to Reach Level 70
The last ten levels come quickest from activities that stack XP bonuses. A few sourced levers:
- Skip the story on alts. PC Gamer notes that once you beat the campaign, alternate characters can skip the story and start at level 30.
- Use a Story Pack shortcut. Owners of Story Pack 1 or 2 can roll a new character that starts directly at that pack's content at level 13, according to the March and September update notes.
- Activate a Vault Card. The 1.10 notes say a Vault Card gives more loot and XP through Daily and Weekly challenges.
- Climb UVHM ranks. Bonus XP rises from +10% at rank 1 to +25% at rank 7.
- Farm the weekly activities. The Big Encore boss and Wildcard mission rotate every Thursday, and the weekly Black Market gives you a reason to keep cash flowing; see our Black Market location guide.

Gear and Keys Around a Cap Increase
A cap raise changes the value of what is in your bank. Golden Key rewards are the clearest example: Shacknews notes that golden chest loot drops around your current level, so a key opened at 62 gives you level 62 gear that you will outgrow within hours. The practical rule is to hold Golden Keys until you stop leveling and to avoid spending heavily on a build piece one or two levels before the cap. Firmware is the exception worth planning for early, since gear with firmware can drop from level 25, and Firmware Transfer Machines (unlocked after the main missions, per the wiki) let you move a set bonus onto a newer item of the same type.
Planning a Build for 69 Points
Twenty extra points changes build planning more than it first appears. At the old cap, the five-points-per-layer rule meant almost everything went into one tree. With 69 points you can realistically finish a primary tree and still put a solid block into a second one, which opens up hybrid setups that were not practical in 2025.
A few planning habits help:
- Finish your main tree first. The capstone and deep passives usually define a build, so reach them before splitting points.
- Treat the second tree as support. Pick the layers that feed your main action skill rather than chasing a second capstone.
- Write your plan down before you respec. You pay at the Respec Machine before redistributing, and leaving the menu means paying again, so know where every point is going.
- Let Specializations fill gaps. If your tree lacks survivability, the Survivor node can cover it without costing skill points.
Gear interacts with all of this. Firmware set bonuses can push a hybrid build further than skill points alone, and a three-piece set often matters as much as a handful of passives.
Want It Done for You?
Pushing a character, or a new Vault Hunter, through those extra levels takes time. The store's Borderlands 4 Level Boost listing covers PSN, Xbox and PC, works from your SHiFT nickname (main menu, Social, then the Account Details tab) and states that no login information is required. Be aware that the listing describes level 60 as the max level, which was written before Version 1.10 raised the cap to 70, so confirm with the store which level the boost reaches before you order.
The store's Borderlands 4 section also lists skill point and specialization point services if those are the part of progression you want to shortcut.
