Borderlands 4 Enhancements: Every Bonus and How to Pick

Enhancements in Borderlands 4 are an equippable gear slot that replaced the artifacts of earlier games: each one carries manufacturer weapon-part bonuses that change how matching guns behave, plus random stat bonuses for your whole loadout. They start dropping at level 15, Legendary versions combine two manufacturer bonuses, and the real trick is matching the enhancement to the licensed parts on the guns you actually use. Below is how they work, every manufacturer bonus and how to pick one for your build as of November 2026.

We checked this against the Borderlands Fandom wiki's enhancement and firmware pages, PCGamesN's enhancements explainer, and Gearbox's official update notes from December 2025 and September 2026, in November 2026.

What Enhancements Are

The Fandom wiki describes enhancements as a gear type introduced in Borderlands 4, replacing artifacts. Each one provides two kinds of bonus: stat bonuses that improve your character and guns in general, and weapon-part bonuses that boost guns using that manufacturer's licensed parts. PCGamesN describes the same split, noting that the manufacturer part of an enhancement only works when your gun matches.

That second half is what makes enhancements different from a simple stat stick. A Jakobs enhancement does not just add damage; it can make your crits ricochet or stack bonus damage on consecutive crits. A Tediore enhancement can let you keep half your magazine on reload. In other words, the enhancement slot often decides whether a gun's manufacturer gimmick is a nice extra or the core of your build.

The wiki also notes that weapon-part bonuses apply both to guns made by a manufacturer and to guns that use that manufacturer's licensed parts. A Vladof assault rifle with a Jakobs licensed part can therefore benefit from a Jakobs enhancement, which widens your options considerably.

When They Drop and How Rarity Works

According to the wiki, enhancements begin dropping from enemies once you reach level 15, and from level 25 they may also roll firmware. Rarity controls how many bonuses you get:

  • Common: one weapon-part bonus, no stat bonuses.
  • Uncommon: one weapon-part bonus and one stat bonus.
  • Rare: one weapon-part bonus and two stat bonuses.
  • Epic: one weapon-part bonus and three stat bonuses.
  • Legendary: two weapon-part bonuses and two stat bonuses.

Notice the trade-off at the top. An Epic carries the most stat bonuses, while a Legendary trades one stat for a second weapon-part bonus. That means an Epic with three perfect stats can occasionally beat a Legendary whose second manufacturer bonus does nothing for your guns. Read the card rather than trusting the color.

The wiki adds that weapon-part bonuses are fixed by model name, so two enhancements with the same name always share the same part bonuses, while stat bonuses are rolled randomly. Once you know which model you want, farming is really about rerolling the stats.

Weapon-Part Bonuses by Manufacturer

Each of the eleven manufacturers has a pool of four weapon-part bonuses. They boost stats conditionally or unconditionally, raise the chance to trigger manufacturer traits, or add new effects. Here is the full list from the Fandom wiki:

Stat Bonuses Explained

Stat bonuses are the random half. The wiki lists the pool an enhancement can roll from: accuracy, aim-down-sights proficiency, critical damage, damage, equip speed, fire rate, magazine size, reload speed, splash damage, splash radius, status effect damage and status effect chance. Each bonus applies either to all weapons or only to a specific weapon type.

That last detail is easy to miss. A big critical damage roll that only applies to shotguns is worthless on a sniper build, while a smaller all-weapons roll helps every gun you swap to. When you compare two enhancements, read the weapon type on each line before looking at the numbers.

As a rule of thumb, damage-type rolls (damage, critical damage, status effect damage) are worth chasing on any build, while handling rolls (equip speed, aim-down-sights proficiency, accuracy) matter most for builds that swap guns constantly or rely on precision. Splash rolls are build-specific and shine with Torgue explosives or ordnance-heavy setups.

Legendary Enhancements

A Legendary enhancement pairs two weapon-part bonuses in a fixed combination. The wiki says Legendary types exist for all possible combinations of two bonuses within a manufacturer, with the exception of COV and Vladof. Because the pairing is fixed, the name tells you exactly which two effects you get; only the two stat bonuses vary.

Good Legendaries pair effects that feed each other. A Jakobs enhancement combining Piercer (a chance to grant crits) and Sequencer (stacking damage on consecutive crits) is a natural fit for crit builds, because more crits mean more stacks. An Atlas pairing of Tracker Antenna and Trauma Bond turns every Target Lock into both more fire rate and more damage.

The wiki also notes that, unlike other Legendary items, no specific Legendary enhancement has a boosted drop chance from a particular boss. The exception is the chests after Bloomreaper the Invincible, the raid boss added on December 11, 2025, which have a higher-than-normal chance of containing a random Legendary enhancement. That makes Bloomreaper the closest thing to a dedicated enhancement farm.

How to Choose an Enhancement for Your Build

A simple process avoids most mistakes:

  1. List the licensed parts on your main guns. Check each gun's card for its manufacturer and licensed parts. The manufacturer that appears most often is your enhancement manufacturer.
  2. Pick the part bonuses that match your play. A charge-weapon build wants Order's max-charge bonuses; a status build wants Maliwan's; an explosive build wants Torgue's.
  3. Find the model that carries them. Since part bonuses are fixed by model name, target the enhancement name that has your pair.
  4. Reroll for stats. Farm or shop until the stat lines suit your weapon types.
  5. Check the firmware last. Enhancements from level 25 can roll firmware, which can complete a set bonus across your other gear.

Some example pairings show how this plays out in practice:

  • Ammo-hungry automatic builds fit Daedalus. Accelerator ramps fire rate the longer you hold the trigger, Bullet Fabricator refills magazines on kills, and Backup Plan slowly regenerates reserve ammo, so a Daedalus enhancement keeps a high-fire-rate gun running.
  • Thrown-gun builds fit Tediore. Banger raises thrown damage by counting more loaded ammo, Digi-Divider can add a projectile on reload, and Recycler keeps half a magazine when you reload, which matters when every reload is also a throw.
  • Explosive builds fit Torgue. Head Ringer raises both damage and damage radius, and Boompuppy can call a missile barrage on kill, which stacks naturally with splash-focused firmware.
  • Gun-shield builds fit Hyperion. Bulwark and Stim Converter turn the gun shield into a defensive tool, while Stabilizer tightens accuracy for longer-range fights.

None of these are locked to one Vault Hunter. Because the bonuses follow licensed parts rather than your class, the same Daedalus enhancement works for anyone carrying guns with Daedalus parts.

Elements are a separate consideration but interact with Maliwan in particular, since Mixologist and Synthesizer reward elemental play. Our elemental damage chart shows which elements to bring for each enemy health bar.

Enhancements, Firmware and Rebuilding

Because enhancements are one of the five firmware-capable slots, they double as a set piece. The Fandom firmware page lists class mods, enhancements, ordnance, repkits and shields as the gear that can roll firmware, with up to three bonuses per set. An enhancement with the right manufacturer bonuses but the wrong firmware is a prime candidate for a Firmware Transfer Machine, and our Borderlands 4 firmware list explains how transfers work and which sets suit which builds.

The weekly Black Market can also stock Legendary gear, with a personal inventory that refreshes every Thursday; our Black Market location guide covers where it is this week. When a new enhancement changes your build's direction, a trip to a Respec Machine may follow, which our respec guide walks through.

Finally, the inventory got easier to manage in Version 1.10 on September 10, 2026, which turned the comparison view on by default when equipping new gear. Comparing an enhancement's stat lines against your current one now takes a single glance. Use it every time: two enhancements with the same model name share their part bonuses, so the comparison really comes down to which stat rolls apply to your weapon types and whether either one carries firmware you can use. Keep the runner-up in your bank as a transfer target for later.

If You Would Rather Skip the Farm

Three things have to line up on a single enhancement: the model, the stat rolls and the firmware. That can mean dozens of Bloomreaper runs. For players short on time, the store has a gear listing, Borderlands 4 Must-Have Weapons and Gear, where the package is chosen from options on the page. Per the listing, the only identifier needed is the SHiFT display name shown on the Account Details tab under Social, no password is requested, and PSN, Xbox and PC orders are delivered to whichever platform that SHiFT profile is tied to, with timing set up over email.

The listing also suggests contacting the store before ordering if a package is unclear, which is worth doing if you need a specific enhancement rather than general gear. More services are in the store's Borderlands 4 section.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do enhancements do in Borderlands 4?

They give stat bonuses plus manufacturer weapon-part bonuses that change how guns with that manufacturer's licensed parts behave. They replaced artifacts from earlier games.

When do enhancements start dropping?

From level 15. From level 25, dropped enhancements can also carry firmware.

Do enhancements work on any gun?

Stat bonuses apply to all weapons or a listed weapon type. Weapon-part bonuses only apply to guns made by that manufacturer or using its licensed parts.

What makes a Legendary enhancement different?

It has two fixed weapon-part bonuses from the same manufacturer and two random stat bonuses, versus one part bonus on lower rarities.

Where is the best place to farm Legendary enhancements?

The chests after Bloomreaper the Invincible have a higher-than-normal chance of a random Legendary enhancement. Bosses otherwise have no dedicated enhancement drops.

How many manufacturers have enhancements?

Eleven: Atlas, COV, Daedalus, Hyperion, Jakobs, Maliwan, Order, Ripper, Tediore, Torgue and Vladof, each with four weapon-part bonuses.
