The best build in The Blood of Dawnwalker for most players is a hybrid: Swordmastery for daytime fights, built around Artery Strike and Broad Swing, with Vampirism carrying Coen at night through Blood Surge and claw damage. Pure Witchcraft is the strongest choice if you like ranged damage over time, centered on Burning Blood and Cycle of Ruin. Below are the three builds that guides keep converging on, the gear each one uses, and the skills worth buying first so your early points are never wasted.
The builds here are based on the Method best builds guide, the AllThingsHow skill guides, the PowerPyx trophy roadmap and the update 1.1 notes as reported by Push Square, all read in November 2026.
How Skills Work Before You Commit to a Build
Coen has three skill trees. Swordmastery works in both day and night, Witchcraft is his daytime magic, and Vampirism is his nighttime toolkit. All three draw from the same experience bar and the same pool of skill points, so investing in one does not lock you out of the others. What separates them is how each tree unlocks its tiers.

- Skill points come from levelling up, one per level, and are spent at Shrines, which show a church icon on the map. Each extra rank in a perk or ability costs more than the last.
- Manuals gate the Swordmastery and Witchcraft tiers. You find them in the world or buy them from vendors. Reading one makes the tier available, but you still spend points to learn it.
- Corruption gates Vampirism. It rises when Coen drains blood, and each threshold triggers a "New Vampiric Powers Available" notification.
- Time is the hidden cost. Some upgrades cost time segments, marked with an hourglass, and those count against the 30-day limit.
The level cap is 50 (reaching it earns the Glass Ceiling silver trophy). PowerPyx notes that an Ultimate Perk costs 39 points in total: 35 spent inside that tree, plus 4 for the Ultimate itself. With one point per level and a cap of 50, that is a large share of your total, so decide which Ultimate you want first and avoid spreading points thinly.
The biggest change since launch is update 1.1, released on October 22, 2026. At launch, skill choices were permanent. The patch added the Draught of Mind Rebirth, which forgets all your Swordmastery, Witchcraft and Vampirism abilities so you can relearn a different set. That makes experimenting with the builds below far less risky than it was in September.
The First Points Every Build Should Take
Whatever you end up specializing in, a handful of early skills pay off in every playstyle. These are the picks AllThingsHow recommends, grouped by tree:
- Endless Effort (Swordmastery): raises stamina by up to 100 percent of its base. The first two ranks cost only skill points; the last two also cost time segments.
- Vigour (Swordmastery): increases max health by 10, 20 and then 50 percent, and opens the path to Second Skin.
- Second Skin I and II (Swordmastery): remove the stat penalties for wearing medium, then heavy armor. Essential if you plan to use the heavy legendary chestpieces.
- Mercurial Fervour (Witchcraft): grants Haste as a human and briefly slows nearby enemies.
- Shapeshift (Vampirism): grants Haste at night and lets Coen turn into a wolf for fast travel.
- Voracious Bite (Vampirism): drains enemy health to restore your own and builds Corruption.
PowerPyx's trophy roadmap makes the same call on Shapeshift and Mercurial Fervour, recommending you buy both before heading into the open world. They also double as passive abilities: equipping three passives at once earns the Absolutely Insatiable trophy, and these two count, so you only need one more.
Best Swordmastery Build: Artery Strike and Sword Sage
This is the build for players who enjoy the directional dueling system and want to fight mostly in daylight. Method's swordsman setup focuses on raising weapon damage and critical hit power while cutting activation charge time and stamina costs.

- Weapon: St. Mihai's Sword, from completing Forge It Anew.
- Chest: Pieter's Garb, from Buried Past.
- Legs and feet: Enhanced Shin Guards and Enhanced Boots of the Arbiter, from A Bulwark Against Darkness.
- Bracers: Ancient Hero's Vambraces, from Xanthe's side quest Path of Glory.
- Amulet: Arbiter's Medallion, found in Waterfall Cave near Great Bridge.
- Rings: Ring of Focus (sold by merchants) and Ring of Quick Strikes (from The Highland Grave).
The two key abilities are Broad Swing for crowd control and Artery Strike for one-shotting single targets. The Ultimate, Sword Sage, restores both skills every time you kill an enemy, which turns large group fights into a chain of resets. Pair it with Charge, a dash-in attack that also works with claws at night, and Stinging Blade for a flat 5, 10 and then 20 percent weapon damage bonus.
The choice of sword matters more for this build than any other. Our ranking of the best swords and where to find them covers St. Mihai's Sword and the alternatives if you have not unlocked Forge It Anew yet.
Best Witchcraft Build: Burning Blood and Cycle of Ruin
Witchcraft is the daytime caster route. It trades health for power: casting costs Coen health, and his runic scars seal over at night, leaving his spells inert until morning. Method's setup leans into that by stacking Witchcraft damage, lower cooldowns, faster activation charge recovery and lifesteal to offset the health cost.
- Weapon: Hand of Fate, from completing A Hero's End.
- Chest and legs: Runic Enchantment and Ancient Greaves, both tied to Anca's Font of Life storyline (Method spells the chestpiece Runic Enhancement).
- Accessories: The Relic of St. Dasius (from The Cycle of Love), the Astrologer's Ring (from Home Sweet Home) and Leonica's Ring (from Echoes of the Silenced Bells).
The core abilities are Burning Blood (damage over time that can hit targets at range), Unholy Vitality and Cycle of Ruin, which extends the duration of your abilities. Method recommends Entwined Torment as the Ultimate for large groups, with Runic Bulwark as a solid alternative. One fun overlap with the trophy list: beheading an enemy with Artery Strike while they are affected by Burning Blood earns Better Safe than Sorry, so a small Swordmastery investment pays off even on a caster.
Best Vampire Build: Claws or Gladius
At night, Coen fights faster and more aggressively with his claws, and Method's combat guide notes that while the sword is stronger in the first few hours, claw abilities outperform it as you level. Vampirism power depends on Corruption, so this build rewards feeding regularly; our guide to the Corruption meter explains how to raise it without killing someone important.
- Weapon (sword variant): Gladius, from The Beast of Balaur.
- Chest and legs: Isbrand's Plate (from Hive and Seek) and Isbrand's Greaves.
- Boots: Vrakhir's Treads. Method lists them from The Cycle of Love, while GamingBolt's armor list calls them random loot.
- Bracers: Enhanced Bracers of the Arbiter or, for the claw variant, Wolven Bracers.
- Rings: Ring of the Night plus the Corrupted Ring or, for claws, the Slicer Ring.
Key abilities are Artery Strike, Broad Swing, Blood Surge and Piercing Shriek. Blood Surge is a heavy hitter that can make enemies explode (the Make It Rain trophy), and it is strong against bosses. For the Ultimate, Method suggests Renounce Death, which adds lifesteal and a second-wind effect, as the stronger all-round choice, or Lethal Crescendo for a stacking 20 percent boost to claw attacks if you go all in on claws. Shred, which adds bleed chance to both weapon and claw attacks, and Endless Hunger, which adds a health segment at night, round the build out.
Which Build Is Best Overall?
For a first playthrough, the hybrid is the most forgiving. Coen switches between human days and vampire nights throughout the story, so a build that is excellent by day but helpless at night will feel uneven. A practical split is to take Swordmastery to its Ultimate first (Sword Sage) because sword skills work in both forms, then pour the rest into Vampirism as Corruption opens its tiers. Witchcraft is the specialist route: very strong in daylight, but it costs health and goes quiet after dark.
Your armor choice should follow the build, and since update 1.1 items can sit in both the day and night equipment presets at once, so you no longer need duplicates to swap cleanly. Our guide to the best armor in the game compares the heavy Arbiter set with the vampire-focused pieces. If you are struggling with any of these builds, it may be the difficulty rather than the skills; the difficulty settings breakdown shows which sliders actually change the fights.
If You Would Rather Skip Straight to Level 50
Every build above takes dozens of hours of levelling, Manual hunting and Corruption farming before it comes together. The store's Blood of Dawnwalker modded starter save lets you test them straight away: the product page lists a level 50 character with every skill tree fully unlocked, legendary weapons and armor sets acquired, and high HP, armor and weapon damage ready for end-game content. It covers PS5 and PC only, and the game is sold separately.
More options for the game are collected on the store's Blood of Dawnwalker page.
