Apex Legends EA Account: Linking, Relinking and Security

Apex Legends YouTube thumbnail: How To Sign Out & Unlink EA Account From Apex Legends - Easy Guide

Apex Legends requires an EA Account on every platform, and that EA Account, not your PlayStation, Xbox, Steam or Nintendo login, is where your level, Legends, skins and currencies are stored. To keep everything in one place you link each platform account to the same EA Account, which consoles do automatically when the email addresses match and which you can check at any time on the Connected Accounts page. As of November 2026 the rules around linking are stricter than many players realize, so this guide covers why the account matters, how to link on each platform, how to check which account holds your progress, the limits on relinking, and how to keep the account secure.

We checked these steps and rules with EA Help's account linking, unlinking, security and cross progression articles, EA's User Agreement and the Apex Godzilla event announcement in November 2026.

Why Apex Needs an EA Account

EA's User Agreement says you need an EA Account to use many EA services, including playing online, and that you must be at least 13 years old, or the minimum age in your country, to create one. Every Apex Legends announcement repeats the same requirement in its footnotes: a persistent internet connection and an EA Account are needed to play.

For Apex the account is more than a login. EA Help says your Apex progress is permanently tied to your EA Account and cannot be moved to a different one, and that you can have only one Apex profile per EA Account, with no sub-accounts or separate profiles. In other words, whichever EA Account your platform is linked to the first time you play is the account that owns everything you earn from then on.

That ownership is also personal. The User Agreement describes the EA Account as yours and asks you not to share it, warning that it can be suspended or terminated if someone else uses it to break the rules. It also says EA can warn, suspend or ban accounts for Rules of Conduct violations and can remove entitlements at an account or device level.

How to Link Your Platform Accounts

The process depends on where you play.

  • PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2: if your EA Account and console account use the same email address, they should connect automatically when the game loads. If not, open Apex on the console and log in with your primary EA Account. You will be asked to confirm with a one-time code sent to the email on that EA Account.
  • Steam: install the EA app if you have not already, then go to Connected Accounts in your EA Account, select Steam, choose Continue and sign in to Steam. You only need to do this the first time you play an EA game on Steam.
  • Epic Games Store: you are asked to link the first time you install an EA game there. The EA app launches, asks you to link your Epic and EA accounts, and then installs the game.

EA Help adds one quirk: connected Nintendo Accounts do not appear on the Connected Accounts page, so a Switch 2 link will not be listed there even when it is working. Our cross progression guide explains what then syncs between platforms and what stays separate.

Checking Which Account Holds Your Progress

If your level or skins look wrong on a new device, the cause is almost always that the platform is linked to a different EA Account than the one you play on elsewhere. Sign in to your EA Account in a browser and open Connected Accounts to see every linked Steam, Epic, PlayStation and Xbox account in one list.

If you find an old or forgotten EA Account attached to your console or Steam, EA Help's recommended first step is recovery rather than unlinking. When you start the game, choose Recover my account if you know the previous login details and follow the recovery process. That keeps the progress on the account that already owns it, instead of creating a new empty profile.

It is also worth knowing what cannot be fixed. When cross progression launched in 2023, players who had more than one EA Account did not have them merged; content stayed on the EA Account it was bought or earned on and cannot be transferred. If your history is split across two EA Accounts, EA treats them as two separate Apex players.

A simple habit prevents most of this. Before you sign in on any new device, whether it is a second console, a laptop with Steam or a Switch 2, write down which email your main EA Account uses and sign in with exactly that one. The extra minute at setup is much easier than untangling a profile later, especially since a wrong link can only be changed a limited number of times.

Unlinking and Relinking: The Limits

EA lets you switch linked accounts up to three times in a rolling year, but it is blunt about the downside. If you unlink a platform account and link it to a different EA Account, your game progress does not come with it. EA's unlinking article says you permanently lose access to game progress, DLC and extras, memberships and subscriptions, previous drops and rewards, and in-game purchases on the new account, because entitlements stay on the EA Account the platform was first linked to.

A few practical rules follow from that:

  1. Pick a long term EA Account and an email you will keep. EA itself advises linking to an account you will keep to preserve progress and purchases.
  2. Never unlink to fix a display issue. Missing items are rarely solved by relinking, and relinking can make the problem permanent.
  3. Watch for a grayed out Unlink button. EA says that means your account is not eligible to relink, and its troubleshooting article lists what you can do instead.
  4. Remember Ranked is per platform. Even with everything linked correctly, Ranked progress is tracked separately on each platform, so a rank earned on PC will not appear on console. Our Season 31 Ranked guide covers how the ladder works.

Keeping the Account Secure

Because one EA Account holds years of skins, Heirlooms and currency, it deserves the same care as a bank login. EA Help's security article recommends:

  • A strong, unique password of 8 to 16 characters with upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters, not reused on your email or console.
  • A secondary email address in your Security and Privacy settings, so you can reset the password if you lose access to your primary email.
  • Two-factor authentication, also turned on from Security and Privacy settings.
  • Trusted devices: after logging in and entering your 2FA code, tick Remember this device, then review the list regularly and remove anything you do not recognize.

The same article lists the scams to ignore. EA will never ask for your login details in forum messages, will never contact you through your console's messaging system, and will never charge a fee for account recovery; the only legitimate place for account help is EA Help. If your account holds Heirlooms, losing it means losing items that took hundreds of packs to earn, which our Heirloom guide explains in detail.

Extras That Need a Linked Account

Linking does more than protect progress. EA Help says connected accounts also let you claim in-game rewards from streams and get help faster if you lose access.

Twitch is the clearest example this month. During the Apex Legends Godzilla event, Twitch Drops run from November 10 to 17, 2026 with select creators: watching for 30 minutes earns the Chibi Godzilla weapon charm and 60 minutes earns the Mothra's Milestones tracker set. EA says you need your EA Account linked to Twitch to be eligible and that rewards appear in-game within 24 hours the next time you log in. You link Twitch from Connected Accounts the same way as Steam: select Twitch, choose Continue and sign in.

Discord can be linked through the EA app's Settings under Connected Accounts, which adds Rich Presence so friends can see whether you are in a lobby or a match, your mode and your party size. Neither link affects your Apex progress, but both are free extras once your main account is set up. If you are building up a fresh account, our account level guide explains the fastest early levels and the free packs they pay out.

Starting With an Established Account

Some players would rather begin with a profile that already has Heirlooms, a high rank or a large skin collection. The store's Apex Legends accounts page lists account listings including Heirloom and Predator or Master ranked profiles and skin collections, and each listing shows its platform, rank and Legends.

Be clear about the publisher's terms first: EA's User Agreement says your EA Account is yours and not to be shared, and its Rules of Conduct tell players not to promote or be involved in account buying or selling. If you would rather build your own profile, the Apex Legends boosting hub covers leveling, ranked and badge services on PlayStation, Xbox and PC.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need an EA account to play Apex Legends?

Yes. An EA Account is required on every platform, including PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, Epic and Nintendo Switch 2, and it stores your Apex progress.

How do I link my EA account to Apex on PlayStation?

Open Apex on the console and log in with your primary EA Account, then enter the one-time code EA emails you. If the console and EA Account share an email address, they usually link automatically.

Can I move my Apex progress to a new EA account?

No. EA says Apex progress is permanently tied to the EA Account it was earned on and cannot be moved to a different EA Account.

How many times can you unlink an EA account?

EA Help puts the cap at three switches in any rolling year. Keep in mind that progress never follows a relink, because entitlements remain with the original EA Account.

Why is my Apex Legends progress missing on Steam?

Usually because Steam is linked to a different EA Account than the one you play on elsewhere. Check Connected Accounts in your EA Account settings and use Recover my account if you know the old login.

Do I need to link Twitch to get Apex Twitch drops?

Yes. EA says your EA Account must be linked to Twitch to be eligible, and rewards appear in-game within 24 hours of your next login.
