AFK Journey Factions: Counters, Bonuses and Best Picks

AFK Journey YouTube thumbnail: How to build THE BEST EARLY GAME TEAMS in AFK Journey - All Factions!

AFK Journey has seven factions: four standard ones (Lightbearers, Maulers, Wilders and Graveborn), which counter each other in a loop, and three special ones (Celestials, Hypogeans and Dimensionals), which are rarer and play by different rules. Fielding three or more heroes of one faction gives your whole team an HP and attack bonus, and a hero deals 15 percent more damage to the faction it counters. Below we cover the counter wheel, the exact bonus values, how the special factions work, and which faction is strongest to build around as of November 2026.

Prydwen's Beginner, Tips and Returnee guides supplied the faction rules here; we checked the bonus percentages against Sportskeeda's team-building breakdown and GameLeap's faction explainer, and the seasonal changes against Farlight's patch notes and Pocket Gamer's November 4, 2026 tier list.

The Seven Factions at a Glance

Prydwen splits the roster into four standard factions, which hold most of the heroes you pull and can be placed on multiple banner Wishlists, and three special factions that are harder to obtain.

  • Lightbearers serve the goddess Dura and aim to restore Esperia. Examples include Hugin, Sonja and Rowan.
  • Maulers are a warrior culture that values strength above all. Examples include Galahad, Smokey and Meerky, Zandrok and Odie.
  • Wilders share a magical bond with the forest and Yggdrasil. Examples include Faramor, Velara and Thador.
  • Graveborn are the undead, seeking immortality through dark arts. Examples include Shemira, Ludovic and Daimon.
  • Celestials are the angelic faction set on destroying the Hypogeans, such as Elijah and Lailah, Baelran and Aurora.
  • Hypogeans are the main villains, intent on undoing Dura's creations, such as Saida, Mehira and Reinier.
  • Dimensionals are mostly limited-time crossover heroes, with Pandora as the AFK Journey original exception.

Every hero also has one of six classes (Mage, Marksman, Rogue, Support, Tank or Warrior), and class is what decides their gear. Faction decides bonuses and matchups, which is the subject of the rest of this guide.

The Counter Wheel

The four standard factions form a loop in which each one is strong against the next. According to Sportskeeda's breakdown of the in-game chart:

  • Graveborn beat Lightbearers.
  • Lightbearers beat Maulers.
  • Maulers beat Wilders.
  • Wilders beat Graveborn.

Prydwen calls this mechanic Faction Strategies: a hero deals 15 percent more damage when attacking a faction it counters and takes 15 percent less damage from that faction. Its own example is practical. If a Lightbearer healer like Rowan is hiding in the enemy back row, a Graveborn assassin such as Silvina will remove him faster than a hero of any other faction. The wheel rarely decides a fight on its own, but in close matches and in Arena it is a free edge. The sources we used describe only the four-faction loop, so check the faction chart in game for how Celestials and Hypogeans fit before relying on a matchup involving them.

Faction Bonuses: 10, 14, 18 and 22 Percent

The second faction mechanic is the team bonus. Sportskeeda lists four levels, each adding the same percentage to both HP and attack for your deployed heroes.

  • Three heroes of one faction: 10 percent.
  • Three of one faction plus a pair of another: 14 percent.
  • Four heroes of one faction: 18 percent.
  • Five heroes of one faction: 22 percent.

Celestial and Hypogean heroes count as any faction when the game computes the bonus. Sportskeeda's example: three Graveborn plus two Celestials counts as five Graveborn and triggers the full 22 percent. GameLeap's explainer adds that each Celestial or Hypogean on your team gives all deployed heroes another 1 percent attack and HP.

Despite those bigger numbers, both Prydwen and Sportskeeda advise against chasing a mono-faction team. Most factions do not have five heroes who are good and synergize, and the extra stats rarely outweigh the utility of meta heroes from other factions. Prydwen calls three heroes of one faction the sweet spot, with the two remaining slots chosen for synergy or power. In numbers, moving from a three-hero core to a full five-hero team only lifts the bonus from 10 to 22 percent, while giving up two slots that could hold your best healer or a crowd-control specialist from another faction. For most rosters that trade is not worth making. Our best teams guide shows that three-hero core in actual lineups.

Celestials, Hypogeans and Dimensionals

The special factions break several normal rules. Prydwen notes that Celestials and Hypogeans come from very limited sources, cannot be wishlisted outside their own banner, and are harder to ascend. They do not use Acorns at all, only copies, and need 14 copies in total to reach Supreme+.

  • Stargaze is the only banner that offers them. It unlocks after 400 pulls on the other banners and uses Stellar Crystals rather than diamonds, with a 3.25 percent chance per pull for the hero you select.
  • The Guild Store sells Celestial and Hypogean copies, which is why joining an active guild early matters.
  • Events sometimes hand them out: since version 1.6.1, new accounts earn 14 Aurora Soul Sigils through Dreamdelve.

Dimensional heroes are a different case. They are mostly crossover heroes whose banners do not return, though you can borrow them from other players, and version 1.4.3 added Dimensional Hiring with general Dimensional Soulstones for ascending hired crossover heroes. They also matter for seasonal play: version 1.6.1 made Phantimals gain bonus attack and HP based on how many Dimensional heroes you field in Soul Pact modes. Pandora is the exception among Dimensionals, an original hero who gets banner reruns and can be wishlisted on one regular banner.

Which Faction Should You Build Around?

The current rankings tilt toward Graveborn. Of the 22 heroes in Pocket Gamer's November 4 SS tier, seven are Graveborn (Eryndor, Senea, Isabella, Shemira, Ludovic, Cecia and Thoran), five are Hypogean, four are Wilders, three are Lightbearers, two are Dimensional and one, Odie, is a Mauler. Graveborn also has two of the most accessible strong pieces, Shemira as a carry and Thoran as a tank.

That does not make other factions bad choices. Wilders bring some of the best control and support in Thador, Velara and Faramor, and Prydwen's seasonal stage teams lean on them heavily. Maulers have Odie, Koko and Smokey and Meerky, and Pang bruiser teams that do not need Celestial or Hypogean heroes. Lightbearers offer Rowan, Hugin and Cyran, all regular names in PvP. A good rule is to build the faction where you already have the most copies of a strong tank and support, and use Celestials or Hypogeans to complete the core.

Be wary of over-committing to one faction because of a single season. In April 2026 the developer said the Graveborn Phantimal had been too strong in the previous season and that it wants players not to feel forced into one faction. Our tier list tracks which faction's heroes are on top right now.

Factions in Seasonal Modes

Seasons add two faction systems on top of the basics. The first is the Soul Pact, which adds a Phantimal companion for each faction. Prydwen notes that in the modes where Phantimals are active, which are the seasonal AFK Stages, the Seasonal Tower and Supreme Arena, you must deploy at least three heroes of the same faction. Version 1.7.1 also added the option to reset a Phantimal to a level you choose, which makes switching faction focus less painful.

The second is Faction Tiles. According to Prydwen's returnee guide, fielding at least three heroes of one faction in seasonal modes creates one or two special battlefield tiles that grant effects to heroes standing on them, sometimes affecting the whole field. A skill tree, divided into four stages with three major upgrades and funded by currency from AFK Stages, improves those tiles. Both systems change every season, so the strongest faction in seasonal content can shift with each new season.

Using Factions in Each Mode

The same faction rules play out differently depending on the mode:

  • Story and AFK Stages: build a three-hero core for the bonus, then use the counter wheel when a specific stage keeps beating you.
  • Dream Realm: Phantimals are off, so pick heroes for the boss's mechanics first and let Celestials or Hypogeans fill the faction bonus. Our Dream Realm teams guide explains those mechanics.
  • Arena: the counter wheel matters most here, because you see the defending team before attacking. Our Arena teams guide lists the archetypes you will face.
  • Honor Duel: each faction has its own rotating hero list. The official notes change those lists regularly; version 1.8.2, for example, swapped three heroes in and out of the Graveborn list.

Building a Faction Core Faster

Completing a full faction core, with Celestials or Hypogeans to round it out, is one of the slowest parts of AFK Journey. If you would rather start with a roster that already has one, the AFK Journey section of our store carries account listings from sellers that change daily. Farlight's Terms of Service forbid creating an account for anyone other than yourself and list account sharing as prohibited conduct, so read them before deciding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best faction in AFK Journey?

Graveborn has the most heroes in the current SS tier on Pocket Gamer's November 4 list, but the best faction for you is the one where you own a strong tank and support. Three heroes of one faction is enough for the bonus.

Which faction counters which?

Graveborn beat Lightbearers, Lightbearers beat Maulers, Maulers beat Wilders, and Wilders beat Graveborn. The stronger side deals 15 percent more damage and takes 15 percent less.

Do Celestials and Hypogeans count toward faction bonuses?

Yes. They count as any faction, so two Wilders and one Celestial activate the Wilder bonus as if you had three Wilders.

Is a five-hero mono-faction team worth it?

Rarely. It gives a 22 percent bonus instead of 10, but you usually lose more by leaving out strong heroes from other factions.

How do I get Dimensional heroes?

Mostly from crossover banners, which do not return, or through Dimensional Hiring. Pandora is the exception and can appear in reruns and on one regular banner Wishlist.

Do faction rules change in seasonal content?

Yes. Phantimal modes require at least three heroes of one faction, and Faction Tiles with their skill tree change every season.
