AFK Journey Exclusive Equipment Priority and EX Costs

For Exclusive Equipment in AFK Journey, the priority that holds up in November 2026 is simple: push your main carries and core supports to +15 first, because +15 is the last level that adds a new skill effect, and save the scarce Twilight Essence for +16 to +25 on the one or two heroes you will take to Paragon and refinement. Heroes whose EX skill changes how a fight plays out, such as Saida, Velara and Phraesto, come before heroes who only gain stats.

The details here come from Prydwen's Exclusive Weapon, Beginner, Dream Realm and Tips pages, Farlight's official patch notes for versions 1.3.2 and 1.7.1, and the Pocket Gamer tier list dated November 4, 2026, all reviewed in November 2026.

What Exclusive Equipment Does and When It Unlocks

Every hero has a personal item, called Exclusive Equipment in the game and usually shortened to EX weapon by players. Prydwen explains that it becomes available once the hero reaches Mythic+ ascension. Unlocking it gives a set of stats tailored to that hero and adds a fourth ability to their kit, the EX or Exclusive Skill, which you then strengthen by leveling the item.

Because the item is tied to Mythic+, its priority is linked to your ascension plan. You will not be upgrading EX equipment on a hero you have only one or two copies of, so the first priority decision is really which heroes you are collecting copies for. Our ascension guide lists the copies and Acorns needed to reach Mythic+ for A-Level, S-Level and Celestial or Hypogean heroes.

Adding up the steps in Prydwen's ascension table gives a sense of scale. An S-Level hero needs five duplicates and 150 faction Acorns to go from Epic to Mythic+, while a Celestial or Hypogean hero needs seven duplicates and no Acorns. An A-Level hero needs 43 duplicates to get from Elite to Mythic+. That is why A-Level heroes tend to unlock their item later than you might expect, even when they are meta picks.

The levels themselves fall into five bands of five. According to Prydwen's table, the first three bands (+1 to +5, +6 to +10 and +11 to +15) each improve the EX skill, while the last two bands (+16 to +20 and +21 to +25) do not add a new passive effect and mainly raise stats. That single fact drives most sensible priority lists.

Upgrade Costs by Level

Each band uses a specific essence, and the later essences are far rarer than the early ones. Prydwen lists the following totals per band:

Exclusive Equipment upgrade costs per band, as listed by Prydwen
EX level bandAdds a new skill effect?Essence needed (band total)
+1 to +5Yes150 Tidal Essence
+6 to +10Yes75 Temporal Essence
+11 to +15Yes200 Temporal Essence
+16 to +20No125 Twilight Essence
+21 to +25No500 Twilight Essence

Sources do not fully agree on these numbers. Another long-running guide, the undated priority page on afk.guide, lists 100 Temporal Essence for the +11 to +15 band instead of 200, and adds ascension requirements of Supreme for levels six to ten and Supreme+ beyond that. Check the cost shown on the upgrade screen before you plan around either figure. What every source agrees on is the order of scarcity: Tidal Essence is the most common, Temporal is limited, and Twilight is the hardest to collect.

Where the Essences Come From

Knowing the sources tells you how fast you can realistically upgrade, and therefore how strict your priority list needs to be.

  • Dream Realm. Prydwen's reward table shows Tidal Essence for every daily rank, but Temporal Essence only for the top 100, from 4 for ranks 1 to 10 down to 1 for ranks 51 to 100. For most players, Dream Realm rank is the main limit on EX levels six to 15. Our Dream Realm teams guide covers how to climb those ranks.
  • Season rewards. When the Crown of Ashes season began, the official 1.7.1 notes sent every player 120 each of Tidal, Temporal, Twilight and Slumber Essence plus three EX Equipment Reset (+15) items by mail.
  • Supreme League predictions. The April 2026 designer talk said players who do not qualify for Supreme League can guess match winners for rewards including Twilight Essence.
  • Stargaze. Prydwen notes that the Celestial and Hypogean banner also drops Dazzling and Ruin Stones used for Exclusive Equipment.

Prydwen's tips guide is blunt about the rare ones: Temporal and Twilight Essence are extremely scarce for free players, and income dries up if you are not ranking well. That is why careless upgrades hurt. A band of Twilight Essence spent on a hero you stop using is gone.

The Priority Rules That Hold Up

Hero rankings change with every update, but these rules have stayed sound across seasons because they follow from how the system works.

  1. Main carry and key supports to +15 first. Since +15 is the last band that adds a skill effect, getting your core heroes there delivers most of the value the item has to offer.
  2. Not every hero needs much. Prydwen notes that some heroes only need +5 or +10, and some are fine at +0, so anything beyond their breakpoint is wasted. Read the EX skill text before upgrading and stop at the level where the effect you want arrives.
  3. Favor heroes who work in several modes. A hero who appears in stage, boss and PvP teams returns your essence three times over. Shemira, Odie and Ludovic are long-standing examples, and all three are in the SS tier of our current tier list.
  4. Twilight Essence goes to your Paragon plans. Levels +16 to +25 are stat bands, and +25 is also the gate for refinement, so reserve them for heroes you are taking to Paragon.
  5. Do not spread evenly. Splitting essence across many heroes tends to leave all of them short of a breakpoint. Finish one band on one hero before starting the next, because the skill breakpoints are where the power is.

Heroes Whose EX Skill Changes the Fight

The clearest priority targets are heroes whose team plan depends on their EX skill. Prydwen's team guides name several:

  • Saida. At EX+15 her skill traps the enemy team for 45 seconds, which is the win condition of the Saida stall team in AFK Stages. Teams even add Thador to feed her Energy so the EX effect fires sooner.
  • Velara. Her shielding and stat stealing ramp up once her EX weapon activates a fully awakened magic circle, which is why she appears in almost every seasonal stage team.
  • Phraesto. In PvP he becomes much stronger at EX+15, when he can summon a new clone, according to Prydwen's Arena guide.

Saida and Phraesto are also SS tier on the November 4 list, and Velara is S tier, so investment in them is unlikely to go to waste. For PvP-specific EX investment, our Arena teams guide shows which of these heroes anchor the current archetypes.

Refinement and the Winged Crown

Exclusive Equipment does not stop at +25 anymore. Version 1.7.1 added refinement using a new item, Slumber Essence. Refinement unlocks when a hero reaches Paragon 1 and their Exclusive Equipment is at +25, and the maximum number of refinements rises with the hero's Paragon tier up to Refine 4. Each refinement slightly raises stats, and Refine 2 and Refine 4 unlock special effects for Rivalry Mode that are shared by every hero of the same class.

Slumber Essence is free to earn. The official notes list the Arena Store, Dream Store, Spirit Store and Recruitment Store as exchanges, and Growth Trials, Supreme League, Titan Reaver, Ravaged Realm and other seasonal events as sources. Keep in mind that refinement sits behind a steep wall: Prydwen notes that taking any hero to Paragon 1 first requires owning 25 heroes at Supreme+, so refinement is an endgame project rather than something to plan for in your first months. Because the Rivalry effects are class-wide, refining one Mage benefits your Mage slot in PvP rather than one specific hero, which makes the first refinement on each class especially efficient.

There is also a cosmetic goal. Since version 1.3.2, a hero at Paragon 4 with +25 Exclusive Equipment unlocks the Winged Crown, a special portrait border. It grants no stats, but it is the reason some account listings mention a crown count.

Fixing an Upgrade You Regret

Mistakes happen, especially when a new hero replaces an old favorite. Prydwen lists an item called EX Equipment Reset (+15) in the Season Store, and the 1.7.1 season-start mail handed out three of them. Read its in-game description to see exactly what it returns before using it, and use resets on heroes you have truly benched rather than ones you might bring back after the next Enhance Force update. Older heroes do get revived this way: the 1.8.2 notes, for instance, added a Level 2 Enhance Force for Harak.

Skipping the Essence Grind

Reaching +25 and refinement on several heroes can take a very long time on free income alone. Some players prefer to start with an account where that work is already done, and the AFK Journey section of our store lists accounts from sellers, with listings that change daily. Farlight's Terms of Service note that it can suspend or terminate an account it suspects has broken those terms, so read them first.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does Exclusive Equipment unlock?

When the hero reaches Mythic+ ascension. It adds tailored stats and a fourth skill that improves as you level the item.

Is EX+25 worth it?

Only for heroes you plan to take to Paragon. Levels above +15 add stats rather than new skill effects, but +25 is required for refinement and the Winged Crown border.

How do I get Temporal Essence?

Mainly from Dream Realm, where only the top 100 daily ranks receive it, plus season rewards such as the mail sent at the start of Crown of Ashes.

Which heroes should get EX+15 first?

Your main carry and heroes whose EX skill defines their role. Saida's 45-second trap at EX+15 and Phraesto's clone at EX+15 are two examples.

What is Slumber Essence used for?

Refining Exclusive Equipment after a hero reaches Paragon 1 with the item at +25. It can be exchanged in several stores and earned from seasonal modes.

Can I undo an EX upgrade?

The Season Store stocks an EX Equipment Reset (+15) item. Check its description in game to see what it returns before you use one.
