To play 8 Ball Pool online with friends, add them by Unique ID or connect Facebook, then challenge them from the Friends menu or the Play with Friends mode; since December 2025 you can also host a private Tournament with Friends for up to 8 players using a lobby code. The catch most people hit is that you both need to be on the same platform type and the same game version, because mobile players can only challenge mobile players and web players only web players.
We checked this against Miniclip's help center articles on adding and removing friends, Tournament with Friends, playing with friends troubleshooting, Clubs, the Settings guideline and the chat and gifting guide, as they read in November 2026.
How Friend Matches Work
Miniclip's getting-started guide describes Play with Friends as a dedicated mode on the main menu and recommends connecting Facebook to get the most from it. There is also a Friends button on the home screen that shows who is online, lets you invite new friends and challenge them, and keeps a record of the matches you have played against each one.

Before you start, know the two rules that decide whether you can play together at all:
- Same platform type. Miniclip says mobile users can only challenge other mobile users and web users only other web users. A friend on 8ballpool.com in a browser cannot play a friend on the Android or iOS app.
- Same game version. After an update, you may not be able to challenge a friend who is still on an older version. Both of you can check the version number at the bottom of the Settings page.
Updates are sometimes released to players at different times, so if you are both up to date in your store and the versions still differ, Miniclip's advice is simply to wait a little before trying again.
Adding Friends by Unique ID or Facebook
There are two ways to build your friends list. If you log in with Facebook, your Facebook friends who also connected 8 Ball Pool appear in the Friends tab automatically. Everyone else can be added by their Unique ID:
- Tap the Friends icon in the bottom-left corner of the main screen.
- Tap "Add by Unique ID" if your account is linked to Facebook, or "Invite friends" if it is linked to Google or Apple ID.
- Search for your friend's Unique ID.
- Tap Add Friend. The player then appears on your friends list.
Your friend can find their Unique ID by tapping their avatar on the main screen, where the profile page shows it with a copy button. Swapping IDs over a message is the quickest way to connect with someone who does not use Facebook.
Removing a friend is done from the same list: tap the small cross on their profile, confirm, then restart the app or browser. Friends with no cross come from Facebook, and Miniclip says those must be removed on Facebook first, followed by logging out of the game and back in. Linking the right login matters here, and our guide to 8 Ball Pool login methods and Facebook linking explains which option suits your devices.
Hosting a Tournament with Friends
Tournament with Friends arrived in December 2025 and turns a group chat into a proper bracket. Miniclip describes it as a private competition for up to 8 players with quarter finals, semi finals and a final.

- Open the Friends interface from the icon in the bottom-left corner.
- Create a new tournament, or join an existing one if you have its code.
- Choose the table. Miniclip notes the table affects both the prize and the rules of the game.
- Invite players with the lobby code (hidden by default; tap to reveal and copy it), the Invite Friends button for specific people, or the option to automatically invite all friends.
- Start once at least 4 players have joined. The host's Start Tournament button appears at that point, and no one else can join after it is pressed.
A few hosting tips make the night run smoother. Pick a table that every invited player can afford, since the entry fee follows the table and a player short of coins cannot take part. Share the lobby code only in your group chat; it is hidden by default so that strangers do not wander in. Agree on a start time, because the bracket needs at least four people present before the host can launch it, and anyone who arrives after the start misses that tournament. If your group is bigger than eight, run two lobbies and have the winners meet in a regular friend challenge afterward.
Every tournament has an entry fee in coins set by the chosen table, and the combined fees form the prize pool. Miniclip's feature article describes the winner taking the bigger pot and the runner-up a smaller one, so check the lobby screen for the exact split before you start. The lobby also has its own chat, where Miniclip says players can send emotes, pre-set messages and free chat even if not everyone is a mutual friend; our guide to what 8 Ball Pool emojis mean helps decode the banter. For the public bracket events, see our existing guide to how 8 Ball Pool tournaments work.
Clubs: Friendly Matches With a Bigger Group
Clubs are the other way to play regularly with the same people. Miniclip says the feature unlocks at level 6 for upgraded (linked) accounts, and that a club you create can hold up to 50 members, with a small fee to set one up. Clubs can be Open, Invite Only or Closed, and leaders, co-leaders and officers manage who joins.
Inside a club you get a shared chat panel, gift requests (donors receive coins and XP for helping) and friendly matches that other members can accept, played on the London, Miami or Lisbon tiers. Miniclip notes that these friendly matches count toward the Friends leaderboard, but matches against the same opponent in the same week do not count toward leaderboards.
What Friend Games Do and Do Not Count For
Friend matches are mainly for fun, and Miniclip excludes them from several progress systems. Knowing which ones saves frustration:
- Trophies: no trophies are won or lost in matches with friends or club mates.
- Pool Pass: Friendly Matches and Rematches do not earn Pool Points.
- Special events: Miniclip says friend matches do not count toward special event objectives such as Win Streak events.
- Weekly leaderboard: only the first match against any given player counts that week, so repeated friend games add nothing to your league score.
- Victory Boxes: these can still be won in friend challenges and rematches, according to Miniclip's Victory Box article.
So a long session against the same friend is great practice but does not move your league standing. If you are trying to climb, mix in fresh opponents; our explainer on 8 Ball Pool leagues and weekly promotion shows how the scoring works.
When You Cannot Connect or Challenge
If a challenge will not go through, run through this list before contacting support:
- Versions differ: compare the version at the bottom of Settings on both devices and update.
- One of you is on web: mobile and web players cannot play each other.
- Challenge settings: the Allow Challenges From setting lets players accept challenges from anyone or only from friends. Miniclip says challenges cannot be fully disabled, but if your friend chose friends only, add each other first so the challenge can reach them.
- Friend requests blocked: the Allow Add as Friend setting can reject all requests. Switch it on, accept the request, then switch it off again if you like.
- Hidden status: Show my Online Status to Friends may be off, so your friend appears offline even when playing.
- Guest account: Clubs need an upgraded account, and an unlinked guest profile can vanish with the device.
Gifts and Free Chat Between Friends
Friendship has perks beyond matches. Gifting lets you send free coins to every Facebook friend once per day; the coins are not taken from your balance and the amount each friend gets is random. The Gifts and Inbox screen is also where you accept coins others sent and request more, and your VIP level increases what you receive. It is one of the simplest daily habits, which is why it sits in our routine for collecting every daily reward.
Typed free chat is limited to mutually accepted Facebook friends: if you add a player and they add you back, you can type your own messages during your matches instead of using only pre-set lines and emojis.
Bringing More Coins to the Table
Friends tournaments and higher tables ask for bigger entry fees, and some players want a larger balance before hosting. The store's 8 Ball Pool coins and pre-made accounts page covers coin services and pre-made accounts for iOS, Android, Miniclip and Facebook logins, and asks which of those you use at checkout. The main 8 Ball Pool hub also shows account listings from third-party sellers.
Check Miniclip's rules before you choose that route: the Terms and Conditions state that accounts and Virtual Items may not be given, sold or otherwise passed to another person, and Miniclip's help center specifically warns against moving coins between accounts. Entry fees for friend tournaments can always be built up through normal play and daily rewards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play 8 Ball Pool with a friend on PC if I am on mobile?
No. The app and the browser version do not cross over, so both of you need the mobile app, or both need to play on 8ballpool.com.
How do I add someone without Facebook?
Ask for their Unique ID, open Friends from the bottom-left of the main screen, use Add by Unique ID or Invite friends, search the ID and tap Add Friend.
How many players can join a Tournament with Friends?
Up to 8. The host can start once at least 4 players are in the lobby, and nobody can join after it starts.
Do friend matches give trophies?
No. Trophies are not won or lost against friends or club mates, and friendly matches also do not earn Pool Points.
Why can't I challenge my friend after an update?
Your friend is probably on an older version. Compare the version numbers at the bottom of Settings, update both apps, and wait a little if the rollout has not reached one of you yet.
Can I stop strangers from sending friend requests?
Yes. Turn off Allow Add as Friend in Settings to reject in-game friend requests automatically, and set Allow Challenges From to friends only.
