OSRS Name Change: Cooldown, Bonds and Name Release

Old School RuneScape YouTube thumbnail: How To Change Name in OSRS 2025

To change your name in Old School RuneScape, open the Account Management tab, click the name changer button, look up the name you want and press Confirm; the change applies instantly. You need to be a member, and each OSRS name change starts a 28-day cooldown that a bond can remove. The timing matters right now, because Jagex began its first OSRS name release in nearly ten years on 5 November 2026, freeing old names in daily batches through November. Here is how the full process works, the rules a name must pass, and how to take part in the release.

We checked this against Jagex's official name release and Jagex Account news posts, plus the OSRS Wiki pages for Account Management and the old school bond, in November 2026.

How to Change Your Display Name

The in-game route starts in the Account Management tab, which sits in the side panel. Its Account section shows your membership time, your bond pouch, your message inbox and your current display name, with a button that opens the name changer. You can also change your name on the official website under your account settings, which some players prefer because it handles reserved names more clearly.

Inside the name changer, type a name and use the look up option to check it. If the status box shows the name with the word Available, pressing Confirm at the bottom of the menu changes your display name immediately. To try a different name, the Another name button sits directly above Confirm. You can look names up even before you are eligible to change, which is useful for planning, but the confirm step only works when your cooldown is clear. Lookups are rationed through a queue, so you get a limited number of checks per session; keep a short list of backup names ready instead of testing ideas one at a time.

A few practical details from the wiki are worth remembering. After one change, you need to log out and back in before you can use the in-game menu again. If you redeemed a bond to skip the cooldown and the menu does not seem to notice, logging out and in fixes that too. The game also cannot tell whether a held name is being held for you specifically, so reclaiming your own old name is done on the website.

Rules Your New Name Has to Pass

The name changer only works on members' accounts; free-to-play players cannot use it at all. Beyond that, the wiki lists the core limits on what you can pick. A name cannot already be in use by another account or be one that is currently held after someone else's change. It cannot be offensive or deceptive, it cannot contain the word mod anywhere, and it cannot be longer than 12 characters.

Formatting has its own quirks. Display names are case sensitive and keep the capitalization you type. Underscores are not turned into spaces the way they are in login usernames, and dashes are allowed. Punctuation characters such as the at sign are stripped when the name is set, so a name typed with one ends up without it.

Breaking the content rules has consequences. If Jagex decides a display name is offensive or deceptive, it can remove the name and replace it with a temporary string of numbers, and you must pick a new name before you can log in. Players who repeatedly choose offensive names lose the ability to change their own name for a year and are assigned one by a Jagex moderator. You also cannot change your name while your account is banned.

The 28-Day Cooldown and Using a Bond

Every name change starts a 28-day cooldown. Jagex's November 2026 name release post confirms the figure and states that the cooldown can be removed by redeeming a bond. The display name interface shows how long you have left and how many extra free changes you have unlocked with bonds, so you can see at a glance whether you are able to confirm a new name.

Bonds are worth planning around if you want flexibility during the release. One bond costs either real money from Jagex or whatever the Grand Exchange price is that day, so it is a real cost for a cosmetic change. Our bond price guide tracks what a bond trades for and how its value has moved, and our money making guide covers ways to earn the gold if you would rather not spend real money.

Ironmen can do this too. Bonds are the one item an Ironman is allowed to buy on the Grand Exchange, so an Ironman can fund a cooldown skip with coins earned in-game; our Ironman guide explains the special interface and the rest of the mode's trading rules.

What Happens to Your Old Name

Your previous name does not vanish the moment you change. According to Jagex, it is reserved for your character for at least 35 days, or for up to 6 months, depending on how long you had held it. You lose that reservation if you change your name again, if the name is removed from the game, or when the reservation period ends.

During the reservation, other players can still find you. Anyone who has you on their friends list sees an icon next to your name, and hovering over it shows your old name. The icon disappears once your old name is released. The wiki also notes that players can still use your previous name to enter places such as your player-owned house until the reclaim window runs out, which helps friends who have not noticed the change.

If you change your mind, the website and the in-game menu behave differently. The wiki's bond page notes that after changing once, you can pick your previous name again on the website, but not through the in-game name tool. Plan your change carefully if you think you might want to switch back.

There is also no official way to swap names between two of your own characters. The wiki says Jagex made name transfers deliberately awkward to discourage name selling, and warns that trying to move a desirable name between characters usually ends with someone else grabbing it while it is free, with no help from support.

The November 2026 Name Release

Jagex announced the release on 3 November 2026 as its first in nearly ten years. The first batch went live on Thursday 5 November at 11:00 UTC, starting with names beginning with A, and one batch releases every weekday at 11:00 UTC until all of them are out, with names starting with numbers in the final batches.

Not every inactive name is included. The released names come from characters that have been inactive for at least two years and also meet one of three conditions: the account was permanently banned, it was never a member, or its membership was paid only with bonds and ended at least five years ago.

To claim one, you must be a member with a skill total of at least 800 in Old School RuneScape. To manage demand, Jagex added a queue to the in-game Check Names feature and the same queue on the website, explaining that traffic during the previous release caused major technical problems and that the queue also makes name sniping harder. Support will not help you get a specific name or tell you which batch a name is in, and a new newspost goes up with the first batch and is updated as each later batch arrives. The best approach is to check that alphabetical schedule, confirm your cooldown is clear or keep a bond ready to redeem, and be in the queue shortly after 11:00 UTC on the right day.

Jagex Accounts and Your Character Name

The other big account change this month is the full move to Jagex Accounts. Jagex says that from 17 November 2026, every remaining legacy account has to make a one-time upgrade, and anyone who has not done it will be prompted to complete it before they can play again. The upgrade needs only your current username or login email and password.

Your display name is not affected by that switch. Jagex states directly that character names are safe: you log in with the single Jagex Account and then pick your existing character. The same post raised the limit to 50 characters per Jagex Account and confirmed an extra 20 bank slots per associated OSRS character for upgrading, so there is little reason to wait. Upgrading before the release batches you care about also avoids a forced upgrade prompt landing at the exact moment you want to claim a name.

Skipping the Early Game Instead

A new name is a fresh look, not a fresh start. If what you actually want is a character further along, our Old School RuneScape page lists accounts, and the listings change daily.

Before going that way, read Jagex's rules, which prohibit giving, lending or sharing an account with another person and say that no one holds Jagex's permission to sell accounts. Changing the name on your own account, by contrast, is an ordinary members' feature that Jagex supports directly through the game and the website.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often can you change your name in OSRS?

Once every 28 days for free as a member. Redeeming a bond removes the cooldown so you can change again straight away.

Can free-to-play players change their name?

No. The name changer can only be used by members.

How long is my old name reserved?

At least 35 days, and up to 6 months depending on how long you held it. Changing your name again ends that reservation.

When does the OSRS name release happen?

It started on 5 November 2026 at 11:00 UTC with names starting with A, and a new batch releases every weekday at 11:00 UTC through November.

What do I need to claim a released name?

Membership and a skill total of at least 800 in Old School RuneScape. You then join the queue in the Check Names feature in-game or on the website.

Will moving to a Jagex Account change my display name?

No. Jagex says character names are kept when you upgrade; you simply select your existing character after logging in.
