The Flame level in Enshrouded now goes up to 11, two levels higher than before the 1.0 release, and you raise it at any Flame Altar by delivering Spark, a set of biome materials, one boss trophy and a minimum number of housed survivors. Each new level adds a minute of Shroud time, a point to every attribute, a higher Shroud passage level and more altar slots, so it is the single most important upgrade in the game. Below is every level from 2 to 11 as of November 2026, what each one needs and how to plan the climb without stalling.
For this guide we compared Keen Games' 1.0 changelog and the Wake of the Water notes with the official Enshrouded Wiki's Flame Altar page and the All Things How requirements list (updated 21 October 2026) in November 2026.
What Each Flame Level Actually Does
The wiki calls strengthening the Flame the most important upgrade in Enshrouded, and the numbers back that up. From Flame level 2 onward, every level adds 1 point to all attributes, adds 1 minute to your maximum Shroud time and raises your Shroud passage level, which is what lets you enter areas that were previously marked as red Deadly Shroud. It also raises how many Flame Altars you can keep active, and the Flame level can never go down.

There is a second, less obvious benefit since 1.0. Every time you upgrade the Flame, the armor sets for the next crafting tier unlock automatically. Keen made this change so players no longer miss a set because they skipped a material or a quest. Your Flame level is therefore also your armor tier, which is why our best armor guide starts with the altar rather than the anvil.
Two resources show up at every step. Spark is not crafted: you collect it at Flame Shrines and Flame Sanctums, the golden flame markers on the map. The survivor requirement counts only rescued survivors who are sheltered and assigned a bed, and craftspeople, assistants and villagers all count toward it.
Every Flame Level Requirement From 2 to 11
The table below lists the Spark, survivor and boss trophy cost for each step along with the altar capacity you reach, based on the wiki's current Flame Altar page. The All Things How table for 1.0 shows the same numbers for levels 10 and 11.
| Flame level | Spark | Survivors | Boss or key item | Active altars | Shroud time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1 | 0 | None | 4 | 6 min |
| 3 | 5 | 2 | Scavenger Matron Helmet | 6 | 7 min |
| 4 | 10 | 4 | Fell Wispwyvern Head | 7 | 8 min |
| 5 | 20 | 6 | Fell Monstrosity Head | 8 | 9 min |
| 6 | 40 | 8 | Fell Sicklescythe Head | 9 | 10 min |
| 7 | 40 | 10 | Fell Cyclops Head | 10 | 11 min |
| 8 | 50 | 12 | Fell Dragon Youngling Head | 11 | 12 min |
| 9 | 60 | 14 | Hydrak'Dal Head | 14 | 13 min |
| 10 | 60 | 16 | Broken Guard Of The North Crown | 15 | 14 min |
| 11 | 20 | 18 | Vorgoth's Bound Essence and Vorgoth's Eye | 16 | Not listed |
Each step also needs five or six biome materials. Quantities start at 5 per material for level 2 and climb to 40 for levels 6 and 7, 50 for level 8 and up to 60 for level 9, so most of the real work is gathering rather than fighting.
Flame Levels 2 to 5: The Early Climb
The first upgrades come quickly. Level 2 asks only for 1 Spark plus 5 each of Resin, Penny Bun, Bones, Shroud Liquid and Animal Fur, all of which you pick up in the opening hours in the Springlands. 1.0 even reworked the pacing so that placing your first Flame Altar is designed to trigger your first character level-up.

Level 3 is where survivors start to matter. You need 2 housed survivors, 5 Spark, the Scavenger Matron Helmet, and 10 each of Wax, Salt, Shroud Wood and Flintstone plus 25 Mycelium. If the upgrade button stays grey with every material in your chest, check that your survivors are sheltered and have beds, because only those survivors count toward the requirement.
- Level 4: 4 survivors, 10 Spark, the Fell Wispwyvern Head, and 15 each of Goo, Corrupted Boar Tusk, Indigo Plant, Amber and Copper Ore.
- Level 5: 6 survivors, 20 Spark, the Fell Monstrosity Head, and 20 each of Mint Mushroom Meat, Fossilized Bone, Ammonia Gland, Tin Ore and Rooibos.
The Fell Monstrosity is also the boss Keen named when it fixed ranged boss fights. Patch 1.0.1.0 on 2 November 2026 made bosses such as the Fell Monstrosity stay engaged longer when attacked from range, so the boss no longer starts regenerating while you are still shooting it. That makes a careful bow or wand fight more viable than it was at launch.
Flame Levels 6 to 9: Cheaper Than Before 1.0
The middle levels were the grindiest part of Early Access, and Keen addressed it directly. The 1.0 changelog reduced the amount of resources needed for Flame levels 6, 7, 8 and 9 and replaced Electric Organs and Poison Stings with more common resources. Fell Vultures also drop more Enshrouded Vulture Talons now, specifically to make the next Flame level easier.
- Level 6: 8 survivors, 40 Spark, the Fell Sicklescythe Head, and 40 each of Enshrouded Vulture Talon, Saffron, Iron Ore, Lapislazuli and Brittle Shroud Flakes. Saffron also yields more per pick in 1.0.
- Level 7: 10 survivors, 40 Spark, the Fell Cyclops Head, and 40 each of Wool, Gentian, Ice, Granite and Flammable Goo.
- Level 8: 12 survivors, 50 Spark, the Fell Dragon Youngling Head, and 50 each of Obsidian, Silver Bars, Mauveine, Wolfsbane and Amethyst.
- Level 9: 14 survivors, 60 Spark, the Hydrak'Dal Head, 60 each of Gold Ore, Green Vitriol Dust and Aquamarine, plus 30 Passionflower and 30 Pearl.
Level 9 is the Veilwater Basin step that Wake of the Water added in November 2025, which is why older guides stop there. Aquamarine nodes are larger and Passionflowers grant more resources in 1.0, which takes some of the sting out of the 60-unit requirements. Pearls come from clams, and Patch 10 increased clam availability to make pearls easier to get.
Flame Levels 10 and 11 in 1.0
Spoiler warning: this section names the item that gates the final Flame level, which reveals part of the ending of the main story.
Level 10 is the gate to Cinder's Cradle. The 1.0 changelog says the next Flame level waits to be unlocked before you enter the new region and raises the Flame Altar maximum to 15. It needs 16 survivors, 60 Spark, the Broken Guard Of The North Crown, 15 Gleam Root Dust, 10 Piscine Ivory Dust, 30 Drak Blood, 10 Shroud Sludge and 30 Daylily.
Level 11 is the final level. It needs 18 survivors, 20 Spark, 10 Celestium Bars, 15 Moonstone, 20 Diamond Dust, 15 Ember Carapace, and two items from Vorgoth, which All Things How identifies as the final boss. Reaching it raises the altar limit to 16, the most the world allows, and unlocks a new 1.0 feature: Flame Altars can push back the Shroud. If you want that feature earlier, the changelog notes that the required Flame level can be lowered in the world settings. Our base building guide covers what to do with the extra altars.
Flame Level vs. Altar Size
Flame level and altar size are separate upgrades, which confuses many new players. The Flame level is global; altar size is per altar. The wiki lists four altar sizes: 40 by 40 by 40 at level 1, 80 at level 2 for 1 Shroud Core, 120 at level 3 for 5 Shroud Cores (needs Flame level 2), and 160 at level 4 for 5 Shroud Nexus (needs Flame level 3).
- Changes inside an altar's area are permanent unless you extinguish it; changes outside reset after 30 minutes or on a restart.
- Extinguishing an altar starts a 30 second timer you can cancel. A replacement altar does not inherit the old one's size upgrades.
- Higher Flame levels also raise a stat the wiki calls Water Source Capacity, from 1 at levels 2 and 3 up to 50 at level 9. The wiki does not define it further, but it grows in step with the dynamic water that Wake of the Water added to bases.
The extra attribute points from each level stack with your character progression. If you are behind on levels as well, the routes in our fast leveling guide pair well with gathering trips for the next Flame upgrade.
Planning Each Upgrade Efficiently
Several 1.0 changes make the gathering trips between Flame levels shorter if you know about them. Crafting resources now show an acquisition hint in their details menu, so you can check where a material comes from before leaving base. Recipes that use stone now ask for the stone of the matching biome instead of Springlands stone, mining toughness was lowered for materials that large settlements need, such as stone, and many factory recipes got higher yields and shorter production times.
- Pin the recipe. Hotfix 1.0.1.2 on 4 November 2026 fixed pinned recipes losing their pin, so the Flame checklist now stays on screen while you farm.
- Hunt the trophy first. Every step from level 3 to 10 needs one specific boss trophy or key item that no amount of gathering replaces, so plan that fight before you bulk-gather the materials.
- Grow your town as you go. The survivor count rises by two per level, so rescue and house survivors on the way rather than in a rush at the end.
If You Would Rather Not Farm Every Material
Collecting 40 to 60 of five different materials for each mid-game level is the slowest part of the climb. On PC, the store's Flame upgrade resources package lists all resources needed to take the Flame from level 1 to 9, plus the items to upgrade an altar to level 4, delivered in-game. Note that it stops at level 9; the two Flame levels added in 1.0 are not part of the listing, so levels 10 and 11 are still yours to earn.
The Enshrouded store page lists the other PC services and a modded save that covers PS5 and PC.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the max Flame level in Enshrouded?
Level 11 since the 1.0 release on 15 October 2026. Before 1.0, Wake of the Water had raised the maximum to 9.
Why can't I upgrade my Flame even though I have the materials?
Check the survivor count. Only survivors who are sheltered and assigned a bed count, and the requirement rises from 2 at level 3 to 18 at level 11.
Where do I get Spark in Enshrouded?
From Flame Shrines and Flame Sanctums, shown as golden flames on the map. It cannot be crafted.
What Flame level do I need for Cinder's Cradle?
Flame level 10. The 1.0 changelog says this level must be unlocked before entering Cinder's Cradle, and it raises the Flame Altar limit to 15.
How many Flame Altars can I have?
It depends on your Flame level, from 4 active altars at level 2 to 16 at level 11, which is also the world maximum.
Can Flame Altars remove the Shroud?
Yes, since 1.0. Altars can push back the Shroud once you reach the final Flame level 11, or earlier if the host lowers that requirement in the world settings.
