Borderlands 4 Crossplay: Setup, Cross-Save and Fixes

Borderlands 4 YouTube thumbnail: How To Play Co-op Crossplay In Borderlands 4

Yes, Borderlands 4 has crossplay: PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players can team up online in groups of up to four, as long as everyone links a free SHiFT account. Since Version 1.8 on June 25, 2026 it also has cross-platform saves, so your Vault Hunter can move between systems you own the game on. This guide covers setup, the one toggle that silently blocks crossplay for a whole party, split-screen limits and how cross-saves behave as of November 2026.

We checked this against the official Borderlands 4 FAQ, the official SHiFT user guide, the Borderlands support article on cross-platform saves, the Version 1.8, 1.10 and 1.11 patch notes and Gematsu's report on the Switch 2 delay in November 2026.

Which Platforms Can Play Together

The official FAQ lists Borderlands 4 as available on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and says online multiplayer supports up to four players across all platforms. The game launched on those systems on September 12, 2025. Any mix works: a Steam player, an Epic player, a PS5 player and an Xbox player can all share one session.

Nintendo Switch 2 is the exception. It was planned for October 3, 2025, but Gearbox delayed it on September 23, 2025, saying the game needed additional development and polish time and that it hoped to align the release with cross-saves. As of November 2026, the official FAQ still describes the Switch 2 version as coming soon, and we did not find a release date there. Treat any guide that lists Switch 2 in the crossplay pool as speculative until Gearbox announces otherwise.

One cost note from the FAQ: online play on consoles requires a separate paid subscription for each console player. Crossplay does not waive that requirement.

Linking SHiFT So Crossplay Works

The FAQ is explicit that cross-play requires a SHiFT account, and that the account is free. Without it, you are limited to friends on your own platform. Setup takes a few minutes:

  1. Create a SHiFT account on the Gearbox SHiFT site, using an email address or a platform sign-in.
  2. In the account, open the Gaming Platforms tab and press Sign In for each platform you play on.
  3. Launch Borderlands 4 and confirm you are signed in to SHiFT from the main menu.

The same account handles promo codes and Golden Keys, which our guide to Borderlands 4 SHiFT codes covers, so linking it once sets you up for both.

Session Settings and the Personal Crossplay Toggle

This is where most "crossplay is not working" reports come from. The official SHiFT user guide describes a Personal Crossplay option in Session Settings, and it notes that if anyone in your party turns it off, crossplay is disabled for the entire party for that session. One friend with the toggle off is enough to hide every cross-platform player from your lobby.

Session Settings also hold Party Privacy, which the guide lists as Friends Only, Invite Only, Public or Local Only. Local Only shuts out online players entirely, and Invite Only means friends cannot drop in uninvited, so check this setting before assuming crossplay is broken.

Difficulty lives here too, and it works differently from older Borderlands games. The guide says difficulty is set individually in Session Settings and does not affect co-op partners, and the FAQ describes level scaling and individual difficulty as the way the game keeps a mixed-level party together. A level 20 friend and a max-level friend can play the same session without either one being stuck with the other's challenge.

Adding Cross-Platform Friends and Matchmaking

Platform friends and SHiFT friends are added in different places, according to the official guide:

  • Cross-platform friends: open SHiFT from the main menu, go to the Friends tab and search for the other player's full SHiFT display name. Partial names will not find them.
  • Same-platform friends: use the left-most button above your Party list and enter their platform username.
  • Strangers: use the Matchmaking option in the main menu or the button beside your Party list.

Some matchmaking modes stay locked until you have earned them. The guide says Ultimate Vault Hunter, Moxxi's Big Encore runs and the Weekly Wildcard require finishing the campaign and unlocking Ultimate Vault Hunter ranks, so a fresh character will not see those queues yet.

DLC ownership also matters in co-op. Version 1.11 on October 22, 2026 specifies that spawning to Providence Island, the Story Pack 2 zone, is only accessible to players who own that paid content, and it fixed the mission not starting in multiplayer when the host was playing FL4K and the Last Resort for the first time. If your group plans to run the newest story together, make sure everyone who needs the zone owns it. Our Borderlands 4 DLC list shows which edition includes which pack.

Split-Screen and Couch Co-op

Local co-op is narrower than online play. The FAQ lists two-player split-screen on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and does not offer split-screen on PC. Split-screen players can still join an online crossplay session, but the PC side of a group will always be one player per screen.

Gearbox keeps polishing split-screen in regular updates. Version 1.10 fixed Vault Card rewards not appearing for the split-screen player and made graphics presets update as intended in split-screen, which helps if you share a console with a partner who tracks Vault Card progress.

Cross-Platform Saves Explained

Crossplay lets different systems share a session; cross-saves let one character travel between systems. The Borderlands support article says Cross-Platform Saves arrived in Version 1.8 on June 25, 2026, using your SHiFT account, and most of the interaction happens at Character Select. Key rules from that article:

  • Your global profile and current Vault Hunter sync automatically; extra Vault Hunters are managed from the Load Vault Hunter menu.
  • Icons next to each character show whether it is synced, ready to download, unavailable, in conflict or incompatible.
  • You can hold up to 25 cloud saves; a Save Failed error asks you to remove one first.
  • If you only own the game on one platform, there is no cross-save option.
  • DLC content, including Vault Hunters like C4SH, is unavailable on a platform where you do not own that DLC.
  • SHiFT rewards such as Golden Keys stay on the platform where they were redeemed.
  • It is not a backup: a deleted or lost save is not restored by cross-save.

Version 1.10 smoothed the process further: enabling cross-saves now automatically enables cloud save for the active character, and the download screen shows completion percentage and bank item counts for local and cloud saves. That last detail helps you avoid overwriting a further-along character with an older one. The same DLC rule applies to the newest Vault Hunter, so check our Loveless guide before planning to move her between systems.

A Quick Troubleshooting Checklist

When a mixed-platform group cannot connect, work through these in order before blaming the servers. Each one maps to a setting or rule from the official FAQ, the SHiFT user guide or the patch notes:

  1. Everyone is signed in to SHiFT. Crossplay requires it, and an expired platform link on the SHiFT site can quietly break it.
  2. Personal Crossplay is on for every member. One player with it off disables crossplay for the whole party.
  3. Party Privacy allows the join. Local Only blocks online players, and Invite Only blocks drop-ins.
  4. Console subscriptions are active. PS5 and Xbox players need their paid online service.
  5. Everyone is on the same game version. Gearbox's update notes regularly ask players to restart the game after an update to prevent connection errors in matchmaking, which is good advice before any session.
  6. The content is unlocked for everyone. Endgame queues need the campaign finished, and Providence needs Story Pack 2 ownership.

Shared progress also behaves differently from saves. The March 26, 2026 update added Shared Character Progression, which combines collectibles, activities, map progress, SDU tokens, Vault Powers, vehicle skins and Hover Drives across all your characters automatically. The May 28, 2026 update added a Shared Progression Toggle that you choose when creating a new character, and the notes warn it cannot be changed after creation. In multiplayer, the March notes add, each player only has the map discovered for areas they explored themselves, so a friend's fully revealed map does not carry over to you.

Starting on Equal Footing With Friends

Crossplay often means joining friends who are far ahead of you, and while individual difficulty keeps the session playable, a big gear and skill gap still shows. If you want to catch up before jumping into their endgame, the store's Borderlands 4 section lists boosting services for levels, skill points, cash, Eridium and gear. Those listings cover PSN, Xbox and PC, ask for your SHiFT nickname from the Account Details tab under Social, and state that no login information is required.

Because delivery is tied to your SHiFT profile, link your platforms first, exactly as you would for crossplay. If you play on more than one system, decide which one should receive the service before ordering, since the listings match delivery to a platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Borderlands 4 cross platform between PS5 and PC?

Yes. PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam and Epic) can play together online in groups of up to four once each player links a free SHiFT account.
